13311679, I turned 25 on Feb. 3rd! 2nd Gen #Soulquarian
Posted by MeshaMeesh, Mon Feb-04-19 08:26 PM
I’m experiencing very mixed feelings.

Never the person to go “out” or drink, I struggled trying to figure out what I should do to celebrate this milestone. I fail at planning things, but my family also always forgets about me lol so I had to just think about just doing something for myself.

I kept it simple and did something that’s actually worth it - I gotta 2 HOUR massage!! Laaawd!!! I’m also trying to keep the practice of “saying no”. I’ve gone thru so much partially because of my people-pleasing nature. I don’t want to sacrifice my wellbeing any longer... it’s hard, honestly.

Oh!! And on the day, my dad and I hung out at the Grammy Museum in Newark.

So, aside from all of that, I’d like to know how you all celebrated your 25th (if you even celebrate bdays at all) and if you have any life hacks you found out along the way.

During every weekend for the rest of the month, I’ll either be getting massages or simply doing something that brings me peace. I usually stay in because I’m so damn exhausted from work, but I’ve realized that sometimes getting out and doing what I know can be healing is better thank just laying in bed, with the same thoughts circling in my head.

Anything you wanna say, I’m all ears!

I don't remember how I turned 25. My twenties were really difficult because I was battling mental illness. The meds I was on only amplified my memory problem caused by the illness.

</bringingpostdown>

I do have to say that your awareness of your body's need for rest is good, especially for your age. Self-care is big, especially for people of color. So, it's good that you're tending to your body and your sense of wellness.

Socializing can be hard when you're tired but it's healthy to try new things, even when it's somewhat stressful to do so. If you can't maybe do something really exciting, say a concert or going to a festival of some sort, maybe you could pare down your plans and go to a museum or a movie instead. Be sure to listen to your body and pace yourself.

Good luck this year!

Wow... that’s actually what I’ve been dealing with for the last few years. I have Fibromyalgia and I’ve been taking prescription anti-depressants and although my memory has been trash already, I think the meds are making my memory/brain fog worse too. I’m really sorry to hear that.

Yess, my mind and body are so so so sensitive to stress. The smallest thing will cause a flare up and they usually don’t simmer down for maybe a month. Plus, I want to get into healing work as a career, so I need to get some kinda somn down for myself.

That sounds very practical! I have never had anyone talk about the labor of socializing like this. It’s usually “just do it, get over it” and “you’re tired? Oh well.” There’s a lot of folks I know who don’t understand that I *literally* can’t hang like they do. It’s time to say no, cotdambit!

Thank you!

remember doing anything spectacular at all though.

Never been a big birthday celebrating person though...didn't do anything major for any of the "milestones"...

I can say that I have spent every milestone from 21 and on with my then girlfriend and now wife though...so that's cool.

We went to Jack Astor's (it was the 90's and was a hot spot in Greensboro at the time lol) to celebrate our 21st together (she's a day older than me). That was like junior or sophomore year of college I think, and I was broke as shit. I drank a whisky sour and she had one too. We shared some boneless hot wings and fries and got dessert. We had only recently started dating but I think I knew she was a keeper even then. She was low key like me, and we were both doing exactly what we wanted to do on our 21st b-day.

Since our birthdays always land on or around Thanksgiving, i've never been in a position to really wild out for them either....
13311978, Awww, that’s so sweet! Hey, if you’re content, that’s all that matters

I always daydream about if/how I would’ve reacted had I been “of age” during that time. I know for sure that I would’ve made it my mission to attend that Voodoo tour. Whew!

Happy belated!

I celebrated my 25th bday back in 1999 by doing a lot of drugs and partying all night at Come-Unity (DJs Garth/Simon/Jeno/Cosmic Kev) at 1015 Folsom in SF followed by partying all morning at Spackle/1028 Geary listening to the soothing sounds of DJ Danny Ting (RIP).

Posted by walihorse, Tue Feb-05-19 03:27 PM
I had high hopes actually for that birthday. I was planning on taking a trip with friends to celebrate, but it fell through, mainly cuz I got laid off in the middle of the year.

I'm turning 32 this year and i feel like 25-27 were a continuation of my early twenties in terms of my activities on nights and weekends. The main difference though was, that I went to back school that year to finish my degree, met my first wife at the end of 2010 into 2011 and by the end of 2011 i thought, well I'm 25 its time to settle down. I and she were not.

MY only advice is continue self reflecting. Try to asses as honestly as possible where you are, where you want to be, and who you'd like to be there with you on that path.
13311970, Thank you!!! Yes, I’ve been in deep thought about my place here
Posted by MeshaMeesh, Tue Feb-05-19 10:17 PM
And how I got here, and what I think I should do to get to a better level (career, financial, health, etc.)

I’ve been in this quarter life crisis since I turned 20, lol.

Lost a good-paying gig while in college and thought it was the end of the world.
For a half-year, it was.
It gets better :)

and happy birthday... if i was turning 25 again, id take flying lessons then go to a strip club

13312505, i was wondering the same thing
Posted by mista k5, Thu Feb-07-19 04:59 PM
i was thinking 2nd gen OKPer but doubtful. then i figured she just means her parents were into the music too. if she is actually one of the artist's child that changes the perspective.

either way i will take some tea.
13312767, Hahaaa, nah none of the above
Posted by MeshaMeesh, Sat Feb-09-19 01:15 PM
I’m just such a huge fan of the “soulquarian” era of music even though I wasn’t old enough to know of or enjoy it during that time. My parents were probably aware of it, but I doubt they paid attention since I discovered the music and artists on my own at 15 years old.

I playfully (and probably inaccurately) called myself 2nd gen because I’m an Aquarius lol and feel like their music is the kind I’d love to rework if I were a musician today.
