to be honest im not big into sean p, i havent heard a whole lot. really enjoyed it though. the beats are really good and sean p is good too. i listened to the guilty simpson small pro album yesterday and that was great. i think small pro did great making beats that fit each rapper.

13312693, Really enjoyed the Bob Mould and Sean P ones
Posted by Marauder21, Fri Feb-08-19 04:34 PM
The Mould album is low key insulting, it's a bunch of songs with titles like "Sunshine and Warmth and Summertime" and it's been below zero all day here.

86 Witness is a solid mixtape with Sean P doing what he did best, and the whole thing checks in at maybe a half hour, worth checking out if you at all liked his music.

2009 was fine, I'm just never going to think Wiz is anything better than okay.

13313957, Is this a Young Buck Valentine's Day album?
Posted by Marauder21, Fri Feb-15-19 10:58 AM
>Young Buck - Box of Chocolates - 0/7

Meaning to check out Czarface/Ghostface and Broken Social Scene, but this just shot right to the top, because I can't even imagine what this would sound like.

EDIT, made it in two songs and had to give up. It's Young Buck crying over autotune and it is BAD. Not even bad in a fun way.

13313989, berner, casanova & chaka
Posted by mista k5, Fri Feb-15-19 12:20 PM
berner was okay. i had not heard of him before last year. i was impressed by his album last year but that quickly faded on repeat listens. he seems to always get a decent list of features. sadly the features are usually way better than him. only song i would really recommend listening to is touchdown. there are couple other okay ones. over all 3/5

casanova was pretty bad. the beats are okay the rapping isnt horrible but its nothing special. block me song about being blocked on instagram was as bad a listen as i thought it would be. 2.5/5

chaka khan was okay. i can see some songs getting more spins. i think this album begs for a rap remix version. isnt that enough beat is pretty good. 3.5/5
13314007, CZARFACE Meets Ghostface
Posted by mista k5, Fri Feb-15-19 01:03 PM
i liked this. the first half was really good. the second half way okay. a lot of the songs in the second half switch up and that doesnt always work. some songs start of kind of boring but then get pretty good, others start off good then get worse on the switch up. 4/5

favorite songs
Iron Claw
Czarrcade '87
Masked Superstars
13314026, Don't like it quite as much as Czarface Meets Metalface, but it's strong
Posted by Marauder21, Fri Feb-15-19 02:00 PM
Ghost sounds better than he has recently.
13314080, india.arie and papoose
Posted by mista k5, Fri Feb-15-19 05:40 PM
india.arie was hit or miss. some really good stuff, some mediocre stuff. she stays woke but unfortunately i think her songs with messages dont work. i dont know if shes switching her singing style but those songs just did not hit for me. her love songs were pretty good though. 3.5/5

favorite songs:
Steady Love
That Magic

papoose was okay. better than i expected. he was kind of hit or miss too. there some song styles i just couldnt get with and others were kind of good. nothing great on it but some good songs. 3.5/5

>What albums will you be listening to?

this is going to be a "words into action" post. i need to publicly state that i'm going to listen to these in order to make it happen

>Berner & Mozzy - Slimey Individualz - 3/10

i'm expecting a lot of kind of bad bay area beats and lackluster bars from berner, offset by high quality vivid lyricism from mozzy

>Casanova & 30 Roc - Free At Last - 1/6

30 roc is a great producer. he's responsible for some very good instrumentals over the past few years, including some fantastic beats that yachty somehow got a hold of and didn't make the most of. i'll stomach cas for some good 30 roc

>Famous Dex - Wave Creator

listening to see how far he fell off and if bighead is still fucking with him

>Lucki - Freewave 3 - 4/15

lucki is capable of incredible highs ("root of all," most of /x/, random verses on YT only cuts) but he's been phoning it in lately. hopefully he can pull it together on this. 4 chasethemoney beats is a huge bonus AND he got an earl sweatshirt beat AND feature. hoping lucki won't disappoint

>Pi'erre Bourne - The Life of Pi'erre 4

listening for the beats. he generally gives his best stuff to carti and nudy but occasionally saves the cool instrumentals for himself. he's not at all a compelling vocalist so it's going to be a chore to make it through the whole thing

Pretty much exactly this. Mozzy sounds amazing at the top of the project. Delivery, pocket, patterns, lyricism are all top tier. I think Berner's problem is that he conflates being cool and being bored. As a person who raps professionally he's technically fine but his delivery holds him back. If he can't fake being interested in rapping these words he took so long to come up with then I can't be bothered to listen. Maybe it's a stylistic choice that he has not quite fully harnessed and/or developed. The instrumentals on this project are both varied and not great but Mozzy manages to sounds good on most of them. The album is loaded with features which is rarely a good sign. B-Real sounds out of place with his sharp staccato flow over smooth G-Funk. Logic attempts to stunt on us with rap showmanship but we don't care. Wiz sounds like he's there for the check. Very forgettable project but I might go back for some Mozzy verses. The best part of this project is that I get to hear Mozzy over more non-JuneOnnaBeat instrumentals and that's the only thing I've ever wanted from Mozzy.

Spotify lists a lot of people that aren't 30Roc as producers on this project. I can't pick out much that sounds like 30Roc. From what I know of his past works, he has a keen ear for samples and unconventional sounds that makes his instrumentals stand out. This sounds like 30Roc being instructed to make "type" beats. Very generic stuff on here, and not even particularly well-made generic stuff. I do not want to hear someone as brolic and steet as Casanova rapping in autotune about how a woman blocked him on social media. He sounds a lot like Busta on "Steppin Out." He sounds like 69 on "Relapse." He sounds desperate for a song of his to get some buzz throughout the whole project. NYC is so washed.

This didn't come out.

Lucki delivers a mixed bag as always. He kind of does the same thing on every song with slight variations in flow. He's a piece of trash but he's cognizant of it but he also won't change. Basically the same theme he was exploring on his early tapes but now it's about relationships and detractors instead of bussin juugs from the window. It seems like he is "in the booth, tellin' the truth," à la Young Nudy, meaning a lot of freestyling and punching in. Possibly because of this I haven't caught too many good lines on this thing which is something Lucki generally delivers on. The beats are mostly serviceable but sometimes not particularly fitting. Lucki is mixed really high on some of these songs, usually way above the beat, and this is a little distracting. He works better when he's "in" the beat and you have to lean in a little to pick out his words. He's not doing his usual painting of vivid impressionistic vignettes on this tape and I exactly can't figure out why. Something about this isn't working and I think it's Lucki.

There are however some fantastic instrumentals on here. "Glory Boy" sounds like someone added trap drums to a Delarosa & Asora song or a Prefuse73 interlude (same thing?); "2012 Summer" sounds like a Chicago underground take on Drake's "Jaded." Lucki sounds very good over these different kinds of sound beds. I hope he goes in that direction in the future and gets back to writing more often because his current technique is not allowing him to deliver the highest quality product.

Steady Love and In Good Trouble are on repeat. Also giving People Under The Stairs lots rotations. My favorite album of the year, thus far. I almost ashamed to admit that I've never given them burn before now.

I think I'm done with the new school stuff for a minute.

13315308, lol thats mostly been me this year
Posted by mista k5, Fri Feb-22-19 11:45 AM
last year i was so open to the new music, im starting reject it again. give me more boom bap. i will start skipping songs when im listening to albums now. i kind of still want to listen to every album that comes out but its not realistic.
13315364, Not really rejecting it. Just don't have the energy for it right now. Too much...

>i kind of still want to listen to every album that comes out but its not realistic.

stuff coming out too quickly and by too many damned people.

Can't keep up anymore. Don't even wanna try to.
13315317, he's doing too much Quavo and not enough Offset on this one
Posted by BrooklynWHAT, Fri Feb-22-19 11:54 AM
i mean i dont mind because i like it too, but i was hoping for him to do more of his Without Warning rapping
13315362, So much that I thought it was Quavo on the ad-libs...

>RE: he's doing too much Quavo and not enough Offset on this one
13315418, that's weird because i think he's doing too much offset rapping
Posted by bearfield, Fri Feb-22-19 02:54 PM
i like the reflective songs at the top of the album but somewhere in the middle he wanders back into standard offset-in-the-migos rapping. that stuff is most interesting when contrasted with a less technically proficient rapper like quavo or 21. when it's just offset it's not as enjoyable. the beats are good but fairly samey. there is a uniform gloom and warble to many of the songs, which runs its course by the middle of the album then keeps going
13316330, J.Cole man...smh....just ruined his verse......

"Get ready....for your blessing....."
13316980, finally listened to it
Posted by mista k5, Fri Mar-01-19 01:26 PM
its not bad but its just soooo repetitive. basically one single pattern of rapping and beats. i dont know if its getting stale to their fans but i think it has for me.
13317022, Could be the reason why their solo missions haven't gone too well...

> i dont know if its getting stale to their fans but i think it has for me.

Listening to them solo is not as enjoyable as their ensemble work. And to those of us older cats who have enjoyed their music, maybe they are just phasing out.

I legit didn't go back to this after i left it alone to spend last Friday listening to BDP.
13317045, i listened to my 2019 playlist on my drive at lunch
Posted by mista k5, Fri Mar-01-19 05:42 PM
a few songs from the album came on and they hit better in the car. i think the style is too good but here and there. a whole project with this same sound is no good.
13315426, Gary Clark, Jr. "This Land"
Posted by Marbles, Fri Feb-22-19 03:11 PM

It's a lot longer than I expected (17 tracks, including 2 bonus tracks). He pretty much stays in the same lane he's always been. He tries to blend a lot of different genres into this album.

I wasn't prepared for "This Land" when I heard it. But it's a great way to kick off this album.

I actually have thought that he hits target with his straight up R&B efforts. "You Saved Me" and "Down To Ride" off previous albums are really good R&B songs. This album solidifies my thinking. "Don't Wait Til Tomorrow" is my favorite track right now.

13316745, This is why I've kind of given up on him:

He tries to do everything on every album. I was really surprised (in a good way) by "This Land" but I'm already exhausted at just the thought of a 17 track tour through countless genres of music.
13316831, I can't really blame you even though I enjoyed the album

It's very much an effort to be a little bit of all things to all people. I can't deny that. If you ever do give the album a listen, come back & let us know what you think.
13317012, i really liked this
Posted by mista k5, Fri Mar-01-19 02:53 PM
the second half of the album is great. the first half was okay but pales in comparison.
