Wu-Tang Docuseries Of Mics and MenComing to Showtime

Will Gottsegen // January 18, 2019

A four-part docuseries on the Wu-Tang Clan, directed by Mass Appeal’s Sacha Jenkins, is coming to Showtime later this spring. Wu-Tang Clan: Of Mics and Menfeatures interviews with the group’s nine remaining members, along with newly unearthed archival footage. Jenkins, who previously directed Fresh Dressed, Word Is Bond, and Burn Motherfucker, Burn!, will premiere the first two episodes of the new series at the Sundance Film Festival on January 28.

“The series follows the founding members–RZA, GZA, Ol’ Dirty Bastard, Inspectah Deck, Raekwon, U-God, Ghostface, Method Man, Masta Killa and Cappadonna–many of whom were childhood friends in the hardscrabble world of ’70s and ’80s Staten Island and Brooklyn,” said Showtime of the project. “Their ingenuity and entrepreneurial spirit brought them together to overcome the poverty, violence and oppression of their neighborhoods. But it was music and their shared lyrical genius that allowed them to form the most recognized musical movement in the world, all while walking the treacherous tightrope that links business with brotherhood.”

The news of Showtime’s acquisition of the docuseries follows Hulu’s announcement of the 10-episode scripted project, Wu-Tang: An American Saga. This past November, the Wu-Tang Clan released a new documentary titled For the Children: 25 Years of Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers). The Wu-Tang Clan will be kicking off a U.K. tour with Public Enemy and De La Soul this May.

Wow. I’d never think I’d see the day. Just wow.

13308078, This is great....hopefully Wutang gets into RRHoF next year.

RZA and Co. have been campaigning hard for that by keeping the group out there.

Showtime ain't playing around.

13332009, one of the best documentaries in recent years...
Posted by CyrenYoung, Sat May-11-19 04:49 PM
..regardless of genre.

Patient pacing, yet genuine in its approach and execution. Director Sacha Jenkins somehow manages to capture the truest essence of each group member, highlighting what made them successful solo artists and one of the greatest groups in hip hop history.

Trust (or lack thereof) is a mufukah.

Sad to see them fall prey to the same issues that often plague successful music groups, but hopefully they find a way to push beyond the bullshit and move forward for the art, business, and culture.

13332023, good documentary but lacked bite in my opinion.
Posted by PROMO, Sat May-11-19 07:55 PM
like, they would walk up to the edge, look over and then just turn around.

which is unfortunate because i'm sure they hashed all their shit out at this point. you'd think they'd be able to talk about it more.
13332072, What more was there to say?..
Posted by CyrenYoung, Sun May-12-19 05:47 PM
..They clearly stopped trusting each other.

Half the group gave conflicting perspectives of the fallout.

Perhaps they simply outgrew the situation?

Either way, I think the Doc took the right approach by digging into their issues while maintaining respectful distance regarding privacy.

13332141, i mean, you said it.
Posted by PROMO, Sun May-12-19 11:41 PM
the doc needed more private details, and if it's all in the past like they said then they shouldn't be scared to share them.

like, no one took accountability.

i mean, you got the all dropping verbal bombs on Martin Shkreli AND Cilvarings or however it's spelled while RZA is sitting right next to them and he was there with both them fools the whole time.

they shoulda looked over and went, "RZA, why was you there fucking with them clowns?" or something.

i'm not saying it was a bad doc by any means but it seems like they left A LOT out.
13333913, so, you want what ppl were mad at w/ the ATCQ doc?
Posted by seasoned vet, Mon May-20-19 05:41 PM
they KILLED Michael Rappaport for that, and all he did was not edit it out. its not like he was fanning flames like Vlad does.

damned if you do
damned if you dont

personally id rather see a bigger focus on the music, the drama makes my stomach turn

13334225, ^^This is where I landed^^
Posted by CyrenYoung, Wed May-22-19 12:12 PM
..People on the outside always want to pry, but rarely respect the level of intimacy granted.

They spoke on their issues in open dialogue while breaking bread (in addition to the individual confessionals edited throughout the doc).

What wasn't addressed?

13334241, Rza made the right move though

That secret album and all the craziness that jumped off around it ended up getting the Wu Wayyyyyyyy more publicity and probably more money than any Wu project has had in a long time.
13332065, Although I felt like a Wu head since the beginning...
Posted by QBoogie, Sun May-12-19 03:53 PM
... there was a lot of their background and inner fighting I didn't even realize. Good doc thus far. I'm yet to finish episode 4 but well put together.
13332347, Very good
Posted by Boogiedwn, Mon May-13-19 02:28 PM
I'm surprised they got Divine to speak on anything.
13332417, Just started the second episode
Posted by Adwhizz, Mon May-13-19 06:08 PM
Them arguing about where the name came from had me DYING!

13332419, That story by ODB's wife is kinda cringey
Posted by Adwhizz, Mon May-13-19 06:46 PM
And Dude made my favorite rap album of all time
13332424, yeah, i couldn't tell if she was crying...
Posted by PROMO, Mon May-13-19 07:53 PM
because it was abusive, if it truly made her appreciative, or both.

13332675, EXACTLY! Looked like both
Posted by KnowOne, Wed May-15-19 08:52 AM
:-(
13334228, Yeah, it definitely seemed abusive
Posted by Marauder21, Wed May-22-19 12:19 PM
Though I don't get the sense that ever registered with her.
13332449, First episode was great. Looking forward to the rest.

13332571, Some of this footage is pretty crazy
Posted by sectachrome86, Tue May-14-19 02:28 PM
Like someone just happened to be filming at some of the most poignant times.

lmao at ODB and RZA going back and forth over the multi layer deep dish cake/pussy metaphor
13332631, RE: Some of this footage is pretty crazy
Posted by PROMO, Tue May-14-19 05:25 PM
that was one thing I brought up on Facebook...whoever had the foresight in the early and mid nineties to be filming all that? kudos to you! in 2019 it's normal to record EVERYTHING but it definitely wasn't back then.
13332632, Seeing Rae record his CREAM verse
Posted by Adwhizz, Tue May-14-19 05:42 PM
Yeah whoever had all this is a HERO
13333979, Some of that footage was from a 2003 VH1 special.

13332815, He's the guy who spearheaded the planned ODB movie, right?
Posted by mrhood75, Wed May-15-19 04:54 PM
It was supposed to star Michael K Williams as ODB, but was REALLY going to be about the manager and how he got to know him. Wonder if they try to get it made again after this.
13333145, yo RZA looked like he wanted to punch him in the throat LOL!
Posted by KnowOne, Fri May-17-19 08:02 AM
nm
13333476, I honestly thought he was Trump Jr at first.
Posted by Ryan M, Sat May-18-19 03:52 PM
Like why was he at ODBs post jail press conference?

That scene with RZA was....yikes.
13396906, that was awful

.
13332848, damn @ Ghost taking care of his 2 brothers
Posted by seasoned vet, Wed May-15-19 10:27 PM
13333146, and his regreats of not doing more to help them experience childhood...
Posted by KnowOne, Fri May-17-19 08:03 AM
that was deep.
13333205, i loved that he spoke on the mental health of it all
Posted by seasoned vet, Fri May-17-19 10:26 AM
our culture needs more of that.
13333544, "I don't know I look sad"
Posted by upUPNorth, Sun May-19-19 06:53 PM
That line hit close to home. Some of these moments have me feeling this definitely deserves to be watched by more than just Wu fans, just some real good human/family takeaway moments.

Method's Mans stories and memories are making me a bigger fan of his almost, riding the ferry back to his first job, remembering his friends from the battered women's shelter, it feels surreal. I'm only those 2 episodes in.
13333953, yeah this gave me a whole new appreciation for Meth!
Posted by KnowOne, Tue May-21-19 08:04 AM
nm
13333955, Meth comes off as the most well rounded dude in here
Posted by Marauder21, Tue May-21-19 08:41 AM
13333325, um sorry for asking
Posted by PuertoNico, Fri May-17-19 01:34 PM
but where to watch? preferably an outside the US-thing
13333542, wow full circle
Posted by GriftyMcgrift, Sun May-19-19 06:23 PM
so my first encounter of the roots was...

when they opened up for Rage in Dallas, which was one of the first dates after Wu left the tour

its crazy because thinking back the rumor was they were "kicked" from the tour for shenanigans

only to find out they all quit themselves because of the hot 97 thing?

like if wu had opened up for rage at that show theres a strong possibility i never find okayplayer.com

from what I remember.

I haven't seen the doc yet, but google Cherry Jones/ODB
13333669, It was enjoyable
Posted by Marauder21, Mon May-20-19 08:29 AM
Mostly for all the footage from the golden age.
13396454, I’m not necessarily a huge Wu fan but I enjoyed it
Posted by ThaTruth, Wed Jul-29-20 11:38 PM
13396488, I've watched this a couple times and really enjoyed it
Posted by CherNic, Thu Jul-30-20 08:13 AM
I had never listened to any Wu projects in full until last year. Knew the big songs, and their names, but never actually listened.

Plan on watching the Hulu series....eventually. Gonna be weird to see some of the actors playing the guys
13396491, Shit, I completely missed this post, when it dropped...
Posted by Dstl1, Thu Jul-30-20 08:19 AM
Just bought the season on Amazon Prime for 6.99.
13396909, Just binged all 4 eps....
Posted by Dstl1, Sat Aug-01-20 09:26 AM
there was a lot in there. The ODB parts were tough. Seems like the whole deal with him signing with the Roc, really hurt RZA. The phone call with Dirty talking to Divine, telling he didn’t have a fucking dime in his pocket was...woah. Gained a lot of appreciation for UGod...just the way he moved and spoke. I grabbed dudes book off Amazon, just now. Divine...man, I don’t know where I come down on this dude. He comes off a little assholish. Obviously a smart dude and a good businessman. Crazy when Ghost said he told him to put the love in his back pocket.
