13304773, New Albums - January 2019
Posted by mista k5, Fri Jan-04-19 03:57 PM
Let's keep this going in 2019. I will make a reply weekly with albums released that week.

Please do add any that I miss. Hopefully 2019 is as good or better than 2018. I'm expecting it to be a let down with only a handful of great albums.

I almost forgot today was Friday. Apologies for the late post.

I kind of need a break from new music to be honest. Still trying to wrap up 2018. I have like 10 albums i want to listen to still. I will get into 2019 next week.

Nothing found below. If there are any that you know of please list them. Maybe some come out before next Friday.

13306760, DC Young Fly - Trap Soul = snooze
Posted by mista k5, Tue Jan-15-19 12:08 PM
generic beats, bad hooks and meh verses. i kind of dug the pretty lady song but everything is very skippable. not familiar with him at all. no idea if this is par for the course for him.

im too generous with my track ratings, hopefully i can hone that in some.

avg rating based on track ratings was a 2.7/5. rating i would give the overall ablum is 2/5.
13307757, he was originally an instagram comic.
Posted by BrooklynWHAT, Fri Jan-18-19 09:28 AM
13307811, was it meant as a parody album? (no snark)
Posted by mista k5, Fri Jan-18-19 11:15 AM
13307842, i dont think so. these IG folks are covering all their bases on content
Posted by BrooklynWHAT, Fri Jan-18-19 12:44 PM
famouslos and dribble2much putting out lots of bball themed trap sounding shit. i think folks just out here grabbing for money wherever it is.
13306771, Gino Marley - 4th Floor = Skip
Posted by mista k5, Tue Jan-15-19 12:34 PM
definitely not my style. i cant stand his voice. he has one flow. this did not need to be more than one song if even that.

avg rating 2.1, actual rating <2
13306816, NEDARB - Amity = Mixed Bag
Posted by mista k5, Tue Jan-15-19 01:42 PM
actually started liking this through the first 5 songs. kind of had a post malone vibe. then it turned into generic rap and i couldnt get with it. i will come back to the first 5 songs but after that it became throw away.

Avg rating 3, Actual rating 3.
13307399, Justin Stone - Homecoming = decent
Posted by mista k5, Wed Jan-16-19 05:11 PM
its nothing special. not familiar with him. didnt even think it would be a rapper. his rapping reminds me of drake. strictly on the flow. its pretty bland. i could see some people liking it. theres nothing horrible on it but not really anything special either.

avg rating 2.9 / actual rating 3

i tried to listen to shaun but uh yeah not for me so just skipped through the ep. not sure how many more albums i will be listening to if i dont recognize the artist.
13307442, M.C. The Max - CIRCULAR = 90s pop in korean
Posted by mista k5, Wed Jan-16-19 06:11 PM
i googled them before i checked it out. it said rock. i guess soft rock. sounded like the lion king soundtrack/christian music from the 90s. a lot of acoustic guitar and piano. the production is actually very well done and kept me listening lol its pretty generic sounding but Go was actually pretty enjoyable and Eh-O! was very catchy.

doubt ill listen to it again.

avg rating 3.4 / act rating 3.5
13307554, Mike and Ryeowook = not my style but okay
Posted by mista k5, Thu Jan-17-19 11:19 AM
Mike Southside - Self Luv Mix
RYEOWOOK - Drunk On Love

theyve both EPs? the mike southside is maybe reggeaton and only 2 songs. i kind of liked baila pa me didnt care for como el.

ryeowook is i guess a korean boy band member. its well produced, nothing painful but yeah not my thing.

i give them both 3.5 ratings.
13307572, John Garcia - John Garcia and the Band of Gold = pretty good
Posted by mista k5, Thu Jan-17-19 12:18 PM
not familiar with john garcia. didnt know what to expect based on the name. i guess he was in some rock groups i have never heard of. im not big into rock but i liked this. it got a bit repetitive but overall i enjoyed it. when i listen to an album thats a genre outside of my norm its hard to give an accurate rating. i basically give all the songs the same rating, 4/5

i like that i can actually understand him and hes not over emphasizing/dramatizing the singing. the music is my type of rock, maybe a bit dated but again i like that i can actually make out more of the music and its not just loud. i wouldnt say its soft but maybe some people that really like rock would.

im thinking its between 3.5/4 i need to see how it goes on repeat listens.

edit: i tried to listen to Balsam Range - Aeonic for a half second but couldnt do blue grass.
13307617, the rest, some good
Posted by mista k5, Thu Jan-17-19 01:44 PM
Legion of the Damned - Slaves of the Shadow Realm
couldnt do it. not my thing at all. cut it off during the first song.

Lost Kings - Paper Crowns - 3/5
boring. didnt like anything. kind of sounds like something that would play at the mall. 4 songs.

LUNA of f(x) - Even So - 3.5/5
i kind of liked this, just 3 songs. she has a good voice. i think if i understood her i might like it more. i will come back to it. kind of sounds like r&b, maybe kind of pop.

M.O.N.T (Korea) - Going Up - 3/5
interesting. they just straight up mix everything. you have rapping on songs that dont sound like they would have rapping. some parts sound like straight pop. Sorry acoustic version was kind of nice. overall it was okay. dont think i will come back to it. it is 3 songs, one remix and i think 3 instrumentals.

Pi'erre Bourne - The Life of Pi'erre 4
couldnt find it on google play

Zac Flewids & Kresnt - The Burgundy Cycle - 4/5
this wasnt bad. never heard of them but its cool to hear some rap that isnt trap or mumble. doesnt really sound old school either. i will come back to it. its just 3 songs and they all are the same rating after one listen.

now i can move on to last week lol

13307728, some thoughts
Posted by mista k5, Thu Jan-17-19 06:36 PM
i think i exhausted myself on new music. its one thing to listen to most new rap albums but to try to listen to all albums??? meh

so im going to pass on further korean albums unless they are vouched for. it all basically sounds like a mix of 90s music. mostly pop with rap verses. im especially passing if the description for the group says formed by ____ entertainment.

APINK - PERCENT
started to listen to but sounded like straight pop so i skipped it.

iKON - New Kids Repackage - 2.5/5
23 songs
23
yeah why?? at least it did have a variety of styles but yeah this broke the camels back. the goodbye road song was actually okay but yeah wont be coming back to this.

KNK - Lonely Night
skipped - korean

Trent Reznor & Atticus Ross - Bird Box (Abridged)
not going to check out scores in general

WJSN - WJ Stay?
i dont think i found it

Cyko - I'm Just Different 2
didnt find it

ONEUS - Light Us - 2.5/5
i thought this wasnt going to be korean as it didnt have the standard group of people pic but yeah it was. cant think of anything original to say about it.

VERIVERY - VERI-US
skipped - korean

g.o.d - Then&Now
didnt find it

Strick - See You When I Land - 2.5/5
kind of funny, a lot of the themes were about asian culture. or americanized asian culture lol. overall it was a generic trap album. didnt really care for it.

Asiahn - Love Train 2 - 3/5
really, her name is asiahn??? lol what a coincidence. it was a generic r&b album to me. it was okay. nothing special.

hopefully i find something good soon.
13307821, Big K.R.I.T. - TDT = good
Posted by mista k5, Fri Jan-18-19 11:44 AM
i knows its a compilation of the three EPs from last year but if you didnt listen to them then check this out. im quickly becoming a big krit fan.

4/5
13307896, gnash - we = listen to this!
Posted by mista k5, Fri Jan-18-19 02:27 PM
it might not be for everyone but i was not expecting this. never heard of him. the description i got was hes a dj/producer and rapper. wasnt very interested but i was pleasantly surprised. its acoustic and doesnt have a lot of rapping. theres actually a theme and mostly original approach to an album in 2019.

this might not be the most appealing description to some but i would describe it as mac miller, logic singing, maybe a little rejjie snow. overall really enjoyable.

4/5 but might go up. early favorite album of 2019.

a couple more albums

comethazine - bawskee 2 - 2.5/5
hes kind of funny and i would listen to more music from him but his content is very eh. a hiphop song named hippopotamus though? gotta give points for that lol. the song is actually kind of good.

connected - conn3ct3d - 2.5/5
not a fan of the rapping. funny to hear an album by shaggy's son. the production is decent to good.
13308027, I was surprised how much I liked it too
Posted by rob, Fri Jan-18-19 10:50 PM
I can’t really place it. It’s....basic. But it’s earnest and he does it on some phrasing that I think take some of the tracks over the top. I don’t really have a frame of reference for this kind of music.

I’m sure I’ll get tired of dear insecurity but be, wait, and maybe pajamas are keepers.
13308002, Jacob Banks - Village = is great
Posted by mista k5, Fri Jan-18-19 06:40 PM
too bad it was actually released in 2018. not sure why it was on the metacritic list, i cant even find it on their site anymore.

anyways this is such a great soul album. im not sure why it seems to have lukewarm reviews. i really enjoyed it. i think its top 20 for 2018. now im going to have to revisit my 2018 playlists lol

fav songs
Chainsmoking
Mexico
Prosecco
Nostalgia
Witness

4.5/5

some others
Lil Narnia - The Melancholy Of - 2/5 i want to give it 0/5 though
this album got so annoying to me. the first song was okay but then it was just the same thing over and over again. garbage

MO030 - MOZONE - 2/5
a trap album in dutch i think. sounded so generic. not a fan at all.

Watsky - Complaint - 4/5
this was pretty good. for some reason hamilton comes to mind. nothing great on it but overall its good.

13308049, Maggie Rogers - Heard it in a Past Life
Posted by soulsike, Sat Jan-19-19 11:24 AM
(the lady from the Pharrell classroom a couple years back) - not bad overall. No real "oh shit" moments, but serves as a kind of reigned-in variation on Kimbra. Good coffee shop soundtrack...
13308057, i liked the songs released ahead of the album
Posted by rob, Sat Jan-19-19 02:46 PM
nothing new on this stood out.

one thing that's becoming a bigger issue with streaming and "the album" and is obvious this week is how some of these releases feel a lot like collections and compilations.
13307756, James Blake - Assume Form
Posted by Hitokiri, Fri Jan-18-19 09:25 AM
Loving this one so far.
Unexpectedly really dig the song with Travis Scott.
Love the song with Moses Sumney, "Tell Them"
The song with Andre 3k is a bop, and Andre delivers a super interesting verse about his anxiety.
13307780, i know the name but i cant think of any song by him
Posted by mista k5, Fri Jan-18-19 10:31 AM
i have a negative view of him probably my mistaking him for someone else. i guess ill check this out.
13307853, Same here!
Posted by Marauder21, Fri Jan-18-19 01:14 PM
I'm like why is everyone so hype about the slow guitar guy from the late aughts, then I realized I was thinking of James Blunt.
13307857, and here i thought it was steve nash!
Posted by mista k5, Fri Jan-18-19 01:16 PM
lol i think you got it right.

i wanted to say ed sheeran or whatever but i knew that wasnt right.
13307816, I have "Into The Red" on repeat.
Posted by Steve O Tron v2, Fri Jan-18-19 11:36 AM
Overall the album is very good.
13307934, About halfway through and it's pretty good
Posted by Marauder21, Fri Jan-18-19 03:36 PM
13308028, I love the first half so much I haven’t really listened to the back end
Posted by rob, Fri Jan-18-19 10:54 PM
I listened to the Andre and Rosalia tracks first and they’re pretty good, but everything else leading into them is even better.

I spent like two hours just on mile high—>tell them—>into the red on repeat. Those songs are ridiculous.

I really haven’t gotten to the point where I’m able to process the last few tracks.
13308030, aside from "Into The Red," I think the second half is even better.
Posted by Steve O Tron v2, Fri Jan-18-19 11:08 PM
James is obviously in love on this record, and he's made some beautiful music to reflect that.
13308345, its good
Posted by mista k5, Mon Jan-21-19 05:35 PM
the production is great. overall it is good but definitely has some great songs.

4/5

fav songs
Tell Them
Into The Red

Power On

i can see it growing on me.
13307774, Malibu Ken (Aesop Rock & Tobacco)
Posted by IslaSoul, Fri Jan-18-19 10:26 AM

Great album
Aesop still in peak condition.
Love this.
13308029, I don’t know why I don’t like Aesop’s music any more
Posted by rob, Fri Jan-18-19 10:57 PM
I listened to it and it all sounds the same to me now.

I dont think it’s him. I think I need to cleanse my palette before giving it a listen.
13309546, I haven't listened to any of his recent albums so I liked this one
Posted by T Reynolds, Fri Jan-25-19 05:27 PM
Using the composer behind Black Moth Super Rainbow is a nice twist too.

Adds some nuance to his tracks.
13307791, Future: THE WIZRD
Posted by Creole, Fri Jan-18-19 10:57 AM
Cracked IG open for a second this morning...
Saw @_gorgeousash story flashing a new song that appeared to be on a new album of Future's...
Got in the car to drive to work...
Opened the Tidal app...
Confirmed that dude dropped a new one...
Was in the mood to listen to it...
Turned the volume up...
Pressed play...

And almost four hours later, I'm still vibing to it.
13307841, damn see i thought it was mid listening to it this morning.
Posted by BrooklynWHAT, Fri Jan-18-19 12:43 PM
lots of 5/10 songs w/ the highs being maybe 7 or 8/10
13307929, Sounds a lil better now that I've closed my office door and turned it up a bit...
Posted by Creole, Fri Jan-18-19 03:32 PM
It was just playing in the background earlier.
13307855, i don't really like this
Posted by Boogiedwn, Fri Jan-18-19 01:15 PM
Gonna give it another listen but there only a few songs I like and I like Future.

13307931, Decent output. Not of the caliber of that great run he had a few years ago...
Posted by Creole, Fri Jan-18-19 03:33 PM
13307899, Good, a little too long, though
Posted by Marauder21, Fri Jan-18-19 02:31 PM
I'm sure if I was intoxicated I would feel differently, though.
13307932, I was irked when I left the house this mo'nin. So, I needed som'n to crank...

13308059, it's great headphone music when I'm working.
Posted by rob, Sat Jan-19-19 03:01 PM
i went through it a couple times. helped me gt lots of emails written and reports read this morning.

i don't think there's much i'd want to listen to in the car or give my full attention to though.

13308050, Leyla McCalla - the Capitalist Blues

https://www.npr.org/2019/01/17/685696394/first-listen-leyla-mccalla-the-capitalist-blues

So far I like this a lot more than her previous work. Way more fleshed out and less demo-y. I know the lo-fi thing was her whole thing previously, but this is a natural and much-needed progression.

She's got another album coming next month with Rihannon Giddens and the lady from Birds of Chicago (Allison Russel?) that I can't wait to hear

13309284, Fuck them for this

>Weezer - Weezer (The Teal Album) - 10/10

And I don't even hate Weezer in the 21st century like that, but I honestly didn't think "this generation's answer to the John Stamos era of the Beach Boys" was going to be how it went for them.

These aren't even inventive covers! It's basically just them doing karaoke of songs Rivers likes/someone asked them to cover.

*runs out of post blasting My Name Is Jonas*

This is the album you play when no one is around in your noise canceling headphones.

The name of this album should be unexpected because some of these songs are surprisingly decent. Don't hate on the Africa cover either.
13309581, Boogie and Lula Wiles albums are real good
Posted by rob, Sat Jan-26-19 01:06 AM
Wish boogie had less/different guests. I really like the instrumentals and his voice.

I’d go see a Lula Wiles show if I lived up north where they’re touring.

I listened to new breed a couple times and I definitely want to hear more from Dawn Richard, but the title track and we, diamonds were the only songs I saved. jealously was close. She’s talented.

Planning on listening to Juan Wauters tomorrow.

13309726, RE: Boogie and Mike Posner
Posted by Kira, Sun Jan-27-19 07:00 AM
Mike Posner is a hip-hop folk singer whose content sounds like a mix of Gavin Degraw and a little of John Mayer. He's basically a credible Logic.

Boogie's album sounds like a dystopian version of Fashawn's Boy Meets World. Boogie going through it and this trash Eminem verse doesn't help his depression. Eminem almost ruins the album.

Can someone explain this bar?:

All this talk in my ear, I got a idea
Like the clerk when you tryna buy beer (ID ya)
13312911, Mike Posner: eh

beats are pretty good. voice is annoying, preachy and whiney. i liked song about you. dont know if i will come back to anything else on the album. starting off the album telling people they need to listen the album straight through without distraction was a dumb set up. didnt even pay off. maybe without the intro i would have different expectations.
