13295208, It’s time for Sunny in Philly to end
Posted by legsdiamond, Wed Oct-31-18 10:03 AM
Yup. I tried... couldn’t get through it
13295210, Never seen an episode of this show
Posted by flipnile, Wed Oct-31-18 10:06 AM
13295218, Awesome.
Posted by legsdiamond, Wed Oct-31-18 10:31 AM
13295214, i gave up on it a while ago
Posted by makaveli, Wed Oct-31-18 10:13 AM
I feel like there are still good episodes from time to time.
13295215, I don't really watch this show but you guys ever read this ?
Posted by Brew, Wed Oct-31-18 10:15 AM
Someone brought this to my attention a few years ago, and it just came up again recently in an e-mail chain I'm on with some friends from school. Pretty wild/fucked up story about the origins of the show and the original "Sweet Dee"

http://www.ramshackleglam.com/2016/07/28/the-real-story-behind-how-its-always-sunny-in-philadelphia-was-created-with-jordan-reid-and-sweet-dee/
13295217, Whoa.. that’s fucked up if true
Posted by legsdiamond, Wed Oct-31-18 10:31 AM
Reminds me of the NE story when they just wanted Ralph..

Shit happens all the time too.
13295227, I can't imagine how it wouldn't be true.
Posted by Brew, Wed Oct-31-18 10:43 AM
But yea it def happens all the time, everywhere. Pretty sad. Looks like that woman turned out just fine but I'm sure for every Original Dee there's another 100 women who completely fell apart after something like that. Pretty wild.
13295243, damn...this is brutal
Posted by gumz, Wed Oct-31-18 11:41 AM
not so much that they replaced her but the reason and way they went about it is some cold blooded shit.
13295249, Totally.
Posted by Brew, Wed Oct-31-18 11:58 AM
I know people who were huge fans of the show who lost a ton of respect for the rest of the cast after learning about this.
13295250, the game is the game.
Posted by BrooklynWHAT, Wed Oct-31-18 12:01 PM
13295254, That's messed up, but...uh...
Posted by B9, Wed Oct-31-18 12:10 PM
"I got a small payout (the equivalent of one episode’s salary), my agent and manager fired me, Rob married the actress who he hired to replace me (Kaitlin Olson, who is lovely and talented and funnier than I could ever possibly be, and whose work I in no way intend to disparage by the writing of this piece), and I never heard from Glenn or Charlie again — not since the day my relationship came to an end."

That sounds like a busy afternoon?
13295340, Interesting.
Posted by Numba_33, Wed Oct-31-18 03:51 PM
Not to defend Rob, but it feels like she skipped over some details in what went down. Have any of the show runners ever talked about this in the past? Pretty wild how Rob ended up marrying Kaitlin Olson; I wonder if she knows about this other ex.

Pretty messed up she wasn't giving a creator's credit for the show, assuming she was involved in the origins of the show.
13295373, It seems like they legit pretend she doesn't exist.
Posted by Brew, Wed Oct-31-18 08:23 PM
I don't know if I feel the same way, that it feels like she skipped over details. I mean "there's two sides to a story" of course, but while reading this/her version of events I didn't really feel like it seemed implausible or anything.

But either way yea - I think I read somewhere that they've been asked about this and they just kinda dodge it, and don't even acknowledge her at all. Which seems really, really strange.

13295236, i pretend it ended when it left FX
Posted by gumz, Wed Oct-31-18 11:21 AM
it was still good then but on it's last leg...i couldn't follow it to FXX cause i was just getting bored with it.

The show had a great run though and i can see why they'd keep going. They are genuinely friends and are still getting paid to be ridiculous...im not mad at it
13295238, If its not for you its completely fine
Posted by double negative, Wed Oct-31-18 11:23 AM
I've been a fan since day one and this point they have so many seasons in the can I just think of the show in terms of seasons. Some seasons they become a parody of the show, some seasons become incredibly self aware and some seasons are brilliant standouts.

Right now I am trying like fuck to get into Veep but its just not sticking but I realize its a show people love but I know its not for me and thats totally aight.
13295239, Co-sign on Veep

I've tried & tried to get into this show & I just can't. I love Julia Louis-Dreyfuss but like you said, it just doesn't stick with me.
13295258, it was for me but now it ain’t.
Posted by legsdiamond, Wed Oct-31-18 12:29 PM
13295261, Same. I want to like Veep so bad.
Posted by sectachrome86, Wed Oct-31-18 12:34 PM
It's funny but something is off with the pacing to me or something. Feels like they are just trying to cram in as many jokes as possible without letting it breath.

And I used to think Always Sunny was dumb and didn't get why people talked about it so much. Then I watched a little more and now I get it. Ive still only watched like 1.5 seasons though.
13295248, Jumped the shark for after The Nightman Cometh
Posted by bentagain, Wed Oct-31-18 11:54 AM
I probably never would've watched the show if it weren't for a christmas present from a friend...the first 2 seasons on DVD

3 episodes that were good enough that I will probably always been at least interested

Charlie has cancer
Rob and Mac try to bang each other's moms
Charlie and Mac kill themselves (not exactly sure of the episode titles)

the show wasn't YUGE yet, and was one of those 'in the know' kind of things

then the Nightman episode happened

again, one of the funniest things I've ever seen on TV

but they did a tour shortly after, recreating that episode live

I remember trying to get tickets, and the shows being instantly sold out

that's when it jumped the shark for me

There are so many episodes after that, I kind of get lost trying to follow them in sequence

I did try the first couple of episodes of this season

but they had Mindy Kaling in Dennis' role...which wasn't going to last long...and it didn't = predictable

I do still like the way they incorporate current issues into the episodes

but it's not nearly as jarringly funny as it was.

I lived in Philly went it came out and stumbled on it by accident. I thought it was a local show because they were at the basketball court by the Italian market.

First episode I watched when dude faked like he was a big brother had me hooked.

I tapped out after season 6 or 7.

13295264, *sigh*
Posted by Utamaroho, Wed Oct-31-18 12:46 PM
it's so hard to admit that i can't bring myself to say it out loud yet.

"They lost it."

and this is from someone who has enough IASIP t-shirts to wear a new one for WEEKS, and whose kids sing "Dayman" everyday.

God damn it, they all look bored and rich. shoulda stayed hungry ala Season 4.
13295269, That exactly how I felt watching this season
Posted by legsdiamond, Wed Oct-31-18 12:54 PM
They are going thru the motions

It’s like hey signed a 5 year contract and it’s year 3... and they want to do other shit.
13295312, like I said above, view them on a season by season basis
Posted by double negative, Wed Oct-31-18 02:11 PM
they've had some seasons where I've said "alright, fuck it, I'm done" but then they make up for it in the next one.

then again, I have not seen this season yet and I really think the last season should have been the last because of the way the season ended...it was a perfect stopping place.
13295316, I agree, they've been very hit or miss for a while...
Posted by Marbles, Wed Oct-31-18 02:30 PM

But for me, it's worth it to go thru a dud or 2 in order to have a shot at a winner. I still check for them but then it takes a whole lot for me to drop something.
13295324, Yeah. Watch this season and then come back
Posted by legsdiamond, Wed Oct-31-18 02:53 PM
Maybe they bounce back but what I’ve seen thus far was pretty terrible.

13295273, I'm glad they're still having fun,
Posted by Backbone, Wed Oct-31-18 01:05 PM
but it feels like they're imitating themselves or something.

It probably doesn't help that this is the first season I'm watching sober instead of high as a kite.
13295370, The Waitress Gets Married and The DENNIS System are two of the best
Posted by J_Stew, Wed Oct-31-18 06:58 PM
episodes of comedy ever. I think they're both in season 5.

The episode where the rich brother and sister hook up with Dee and Charlie as a Dinner for Shmucks type thing, but the girl really was into Charlie was so good.

There are so many great episodes that even the mid-level ones are worth watching.
13295378, The Me Too episode this season was outstanding.
Posted by Frank Longo, Wed Oct-31-18 09:02 PM
It's been hit or miss the last several seasons, but it's still one of those shows that, when on, makes me laugh harder than most everything else on TV.
13296577, Last 10 minutes of this season's finale was some of the best ever
Posted by Innocent Criminal, Thu Nov-08-18 12:36 PM
13296609, gotta disagree
Posted by atruhead, Thu Nov-08-18 01:38 PM
the show was built on the back of degeneracy

"Frank stops being homophobic at age 75" ruins what we tune in for

the message was worthy but at some point it feels like the show is selling out
13305055, so...yeah, season 12 is challenging
Posted by double negative, Mon Jan-07-19 12:01 PM
I finally got around to watching it

hot take, I think they need to have their budget halved or have some other limitation imposed to make them think creatively

overall I'd say 12 is a decent season but its acutely self aware
13305112, A few good moments but overall felt mailed in
Posted by legsdiamond, Mon Jan-07-19 01:07 PM
13305061, It did what it was supposed to do for 6 or 7 seasons.
Posted by Castro, Mon Jan-07-19 12:23 PM
And it did it at a level that few programs have achieved. That is enough.
