Still a ton of stuff in Goldeneye and Perfect Dark that you just don't see in modern shooters, or even a lot of shooters that followed in their generation. The difficulty isn't just enemies that take more bullets or do more damage or less ammo or body armor on the ground, but completing extra tasks, finishing the level in an increasingly tight amount of time while still having to do more, things that would totally changed how you moved through a level and whether a decorative room on Agent was suddenly the most important room in the world on 007 mode.


There's another line from this interview when they get to talking about how speedrunning has kept this game relevant in the modern era more than anything else; these guys put a level in the game (Facility, again) that was incredibly important in terms of learning mechanics, weapons and enemy behavior, had a pretty good number of side rooms containing items you needed to proceed, and one of the cooler end-level set pieces in games (especially consoles) to that point...and then said do it all in under two minutes if you want to truly be 007.


They still don't make games like that often, they just get "harder".
