13281804, Using Oddjob was cheating and I don't care

Great interview with the develops of Golden Eye 007

https://melmagazine.com/an-oral-history-of-goldeneye-007-on-the-n64-129844f1c5ab

Pretty long read so wont bother swiping it.

This game was so fun, solo was great but multiplayer was where it was. This has been said before but its crazy that multiplayer was a last minute addition that the developers basically snuck in.

This was basically peak gaming for me. Perfect Dark was great and a lot of improvements were made to multiplayer that made it fun but it just wasnt the same. I could never get into Halo.

Its still fun to play goldeneye on emulators. There are even some great mods that blend Golden Eye and Perfect Dark.

proximity mines were my preferred weapon.
13281805, I was a beast in my group

It's always weird to think about how this kind of gaming just isn't a part of my life anymore, nobody I know as an adult plays video games or if they do it's all online shooters or sports games. I probably couldn't be caught dead playing a split screen game, either. But it was such a novelty to plug four controllers into a console and huddle around a 19" CRT back then...

I called the Facility level the "Fakillity" because of how beastly I was on it. One thing that never gets brought up with the N64 controller - and why I think it gets so much hate - is that it was inadvertently designed for left-handers. I was a beast in every first person game I played for that console in a way I've never been since.

I'll also take Golden Gun or License to Kill in the Library, but my move was generally just straight up Death Match in the Facility playing as 006.

13281810, facility is an awesome level
Posted by mista k5, Thu Aug-23-18 12:22 PM
hiding in the bathroom was fun, wether it was planting proximity mines on its way there or hiding in a stall with pistols. when i found out how to jump back into the vent i thought it would be a killer advantage but it wasnt.

caverns was dope too.

theres something about being able to play in person with people. even if split-screen doesnt make sense in this type of game it did add to the fun.

dk mode and paintball was funny too.
13281806, the O.G. inverted controls

goat game... so many great times with friends.
13281834, he was banned from our house game
Posted by RobOne4, Thu Aug-23-18 01:05 PM
only punks chose oddjob. Picking him was a good way to get thrown out of the game.
13281837, basically
Posted by mista k5, Thu Aug-23-18 01:07 PM
kneeling was fair game though
13281855, Yep. No Oddjob was the standard rule in the dorms back in the day.
Posted by soulfunk, Thu Aug-23-18 01:39 PM
13281880, Yeah we def frowned on anyone choosing Oddjob
Posted by 13Rose, Thu Aug-23-18 02:30 PM
I love that game though, still do. I tried playing with friend's recently and they couldn't get into it. I was still having fun like the old days. But I'm good so that might be a factor. Shout out to my cats who love the sound of that 44 magnum barking.
13281893, I love the line from the dev who said he'd pick Jaws out of spite
Posted by Nodima, Thu Aug-23-18 02:47 PM
Just to prove he had the skills

That was a move I'd pull on Oddjob selectors for sure

Posted by mista k5, Thu Aug-23-18 02:54 PM
i think at some times i would pick odd job to rile my brother up. he'd get mad then get oddjob and would get even angrier when i beat him.
13281962, no Oddjob, no kneeling
Posted by will_5198, Thu Aug-23-18 06:21 PM
honestly that should be assumed regardless...

i had some cousins that would straight jack the cartridge out or throw the remote when they lost

13281896, Man, I took my nephews to Comic Con Boston two weeks ago.
Posted by Cam, Thu Aug-23-18 02:49 PM
There was a stall that had a 64 set-up with Golden Eye.
I whipped their little asses real quick, but they couldn't get enough.
Now I have to grab them system.
13281904, its a great game
Posted by mista k5, Thu Aug-23-18 02:58 PM
the graphics are funky for now and i think the old school controls would throw current gamers off but its definitely still fun.

the interview is great because it gives some insights into some of the weird things in the game that made it great.

being able to shoot objects was so random but also great.
13281901, We played facility, one shot kill ALL THROUGH COLLEGE.
Posted by Buddy_Gilapagos, Thu Aug-23-18 02:54 PM
It was just weird because it would be dudes in a room playing and drinking and a whole bunch of other dudes AND girls watching. Weird great times.

13281963, i never once played Goldeneye and its still great. here's why:
Posted by PROMO, Thu Aug-23-18 06:27 PM
one of the best ways to measure how dope a game was, at least back in the late 90's/early 00's, was if you could watch other people play and be invested just as much as the players and be having fun not even touching the controller.

like someone said earlier, whole dorm room full of people when only two or four people are playing.
13281967, The options man, the options they crammed into that thing
Posted by BigReg, Thu Aug-23-18 07:09 PM
in 2018 niggas like oddjob, golden gun only modes, etc...would be paid DLC, LOL.

Kudos to that whole team, you can tell how much love that game got during development
13281980, It's not just the multiplayer stuff; they really were clever at solo
Posted by Nodima, Thu Aug-23-18 08:26 PM
Still a ton of stuff in Goldeneye and Perfect Dark that you just don't see in modern shooters, or even a lot of shooters that followed in their generation. The difficulty isn't just enemies that take more bullets or do more damage or less ammo or body armor on the ground, but completing extra tasks, finishing the level in an increasingly tight amount of time while still having to do more, things that would totally changed how you moved through a level and whether a decorative room on Agent was suddenly the most important room in the world on 007 mode.

There's another line from this interview when they get to talking about how speedrunning has kept this game relevant in the modern era more than anything else; these guys put a level in the game (Facility, again) that was incredibly important in terms of learning mechanics, weapons and enemy behavior, had a pretty good number of side rooms containing items you needed to proceed, and one of the cooler end-level set pieces in games (especially consoles) to that point...and then said do it all in under two minutes if you want to truly be 007.

They still don't make games like that often, they just get "harder".

Posted by seasoned vet, Thu Aug-23-18 07:38 PM
features like paintball mode, one shot kill, and the ability to limit guns (all pistols/ shotguns)

instead the CoD developers were too busy adding features people werent asking for

13282272, Using Oddjob Was a Certified Bitch Move
Posted by RexLongfellow, Sat Aug-25-18 12:53 PM
If someone picked Oddjob, the rest of us would team up and just hunt him, just to discourage them from picking him again

GoldenEye was THE game. Licence to Kill on any level (especially the facility). Regular mode was OK, but people would hover around the flak jackets until they reappeared

I was NICE with the sniper rifle. Would pick a spot and just pick people off.

And the funniest shit ever is Licence to Kill mode, when someone had the ill automatic weapon and you run up behind them and chop them in the back of the head.

And the knives were the hardest shit EVER
13282426, those knives sounds were so satisfying though
Posted by mista k5, Mon Aug-27-18 09:28 AM
after a couple of hours we would switch to slappers only or knives.
13282491, Thought this post was about a dude getting work off a new job site...

13468553, GoldenEye 007 Coming To Xbox Game Pass, Nintendo Switch
Posted by mista k5, Tue Sep-13-22 12:57 PM
Finally

https://www.gamespot.com/articles/goldeneye-007-coming-to-xbox-game-pass-nintendo-switch/1100-6507428/

1997's iconic James Bond game, GoldenEye 007, is coming to Xbox Game Pass and Nintendo Switch, it was announced today.

The N64 game has been "faithfully recreated for Xbox consoles," Rare said. It will include achievements, 4K resolution (for supported TVs), and a smother framerate. There will be split-screen local multiplayer that benefits from improved framerate, too. In a blog post, Microsoft said players can expect new control options, like dual analogue stick support, as well as a native 16:9 resolution.

The game is "coming soon" to Xbox Game Pass, Rare, which is owned by Microsoft, said in its announcement tweet. A specific release date, however, was not announced. Everyone who owns a digital copy Rare Replay, the compilation pack of classic Rare games, will get GoldenEye at no extra cost.

During the September Nintendo Direct today, Nintendo confirmed that GoldenEye 64 is coming to the Switch via backwards compatibility for Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack owners. There will be online play for Nintendo Switch, and that feature is exclusive to Nintendo's console.

A new version of GoldenEye was supposed to come to Xbox 360 years ago, but it ran into licensing issues. The HD remaster later leaked, and now it's officially coming to Xbox and Switch.

A GoldenEye remake for the Wii was released in 2010, but it featured Daniel Craig standing in for Pierce Brosnan. A Reloaded edition for PS3 and Xbox 360 was released later.

2022 marks the 60th anniversary of the James Bond series. The company behind the franchise teased that fans should "watch out for announcements, events, and new content across 2022."

13468604, Dual analog support sounds like heresy LOL!
Posted by Nodima, Wed Sep-14-22 05:13 AM
I don't see myself owning an XBox anytime soon (though Game Pass seems ridiculously legit) but I just can't imagine being able to move, aim and shoot at the same time in this game! I can't wait to see what that looks like...

Otherwise, despite what I said about their incredibly clever approach to difficulty settings four years ago, bringing this game back won't be as satisfying as anybody wants it to be.

It's like how early PS2 adopters constantly romanticize SOCOM I and II and insist a game like that would still succeed today...Goldeneye won so many time and place dice rolls on its way to the nostalgic weight it carries today, no matter how polished the XBox version is (because the Switch version feels like a TOTAL vanity product) I just don't see how it holds up even compared to the original Medal of Honor or Call of Duty, let alone DOOM or whatever.

But I'd be happy to be proven wrong!

13468626, you're probably right
Posted by mista k5, Wed Sep-14-22 10:18 AM
i have played goldeneye throughout the years on emulators and had tons of fun. since the switch added n64 games i have tried playing a few but i never go back to them. thats actually the case for the nes snes and genesis games. maybe in these cases im just not that interested in the games so it could be different with goldeneye but it could be the same.

only reason i have some hope it will be different is the online play. im very curious to see if the online mode will only show you your screen or if you will still be able to see everyones lol itd be nice if you could choose.

not too worried about the controls, the original game let you play with two controllers if you wanted to lol

i just have so many memories with this game that i think i will have fun with it for more than a day.

i dont have an xbox or game pass but someone mentioned it will only be on the game pass that can only be used on an xbox. not sure if thats a thing or not but i hope not. id sign up for the service if i can play this game on my laptop. not gonna buy an xbox just for it though.
