Drake too big to fail.
13269450, That Im Upset song tho...

It dropped after two characteristically strong Drake songs tho, but that has me thinking this is his Kingdom Come/Rebirth/Nastradamas

Posted by BigReg, Tue Jun-26-18 10:00 AM
particularly in comparison to Gods Plan/Nice For. APESHIT came out a week ago and is #13 along with articles stating that The Carters is soft compared to other Beyonce releases (much of it based on that Tidal exclusivity window but still)
13269523, well drake had a good run i guess. a song didnt instantly go #1

13269468, That's the beauty of it, we don't have to, even if the culture does
Posted by Marauder21, Tue Jun-26-18 08:20 AM
He can be both the guy who owns summer with an album full of heat rocks (if that's what the album is) and will forever be the guy playing border patrol with his hidden child.

Like, he could get a lifetime achievement Grammy someday and still be the guy who wouldn't respond when another rapper talked shit about his own parents. Doesn't take away the Grammy, but people remember.
13269515, let me see you disobey J Prince

13269546, pretty much this.
Posted by double negative, Tue Jun-26-18 10:26 AM
i mean...

Dre slapped the hot cheetos out of Dee Barnes and yet we still rock with him.

Rick Ross...we know the story, and yet, we all pretend to believe in his stage persona

R Kelly is R Kelly

etc etc etc
13269445, Can’t wait to hear what styles and cultures he appropriated this go round.
Posted by Innocent Criminal, Tue Jun-26-18 06:05 AM
He does it better than anyone. I expect this to be pure flames.

13269467, the coolest thing he could do is just put out a great album
Posted by Tiger Woods, Tue Jun-26-18 08:11 AM

now, he probably wont. There will probably be a bunch of silly singing and bad Jamaican accents.

But

If it's good? Like, drops right at Midnight on Thursday and is loaded with heat? That's the coolest thing he could do. No Noise. Just cuts right in time for everyone's summer.

If Scorpion is good enough, Drake could actually have the last laugh and leave Pusha T looking like the old and mostly irrelevant C-list rapper that he is.
13269470, ay man dont forget 40.on some real shit? dis kinda morbid but

Drake seems to want to be acknowledged as one of the best MC's ever. He ain't getting that this way, and after what Push did to him.

What's a list of songs that people who grew up on 90's rap might find palatable? just trying to figure this shit and and maybe hear something worthwhile from him.

i swear, being 20 years old in the Mos/Thought/Kweli era kinda set a bar for listening to shit that's lyrical and musically complex that new stuff just seems hollow *shrugs*

how to make a feel good track.
how to make a retrospective/contemplative track.
how to make a grownup track.
how to make a dis track.
how to make a "fuck you old girlfriend that broke my heart" track.

I mean seriously, dude is good at what he does. Anyone that denies it is really just on some hate for hates sake shit IMO. There's enough room for Drake in the game IMO.

I got plenty of these to direct my vocals to when i'm reciting these verses in my head while sippin on some yak or just lamping in general...

embarrassed that folks don't unanimously see Kendrick as the best 'now' hiphop artist in a walk, I can duck off and listen to some Drake. At it's worst, his stuff is guilty of being too 'surface', but it's fine enough and he has lots of solid songs with real and solid rapping going on. And I'm 40.

13269538, serious question - what does he have left to talk about?
Posted by double negative, Tue Jun-26-18 10:22 AM
I asked the same thing a long time back when we were first talking about a new Kanye album

5 albums
6 mixtapes

his whole existence has been in the spotlight

More songs about, the life of exclusivity, isolation, fame, his strained relationship with his father, the club, boasts....?

then again, I am an open hater of Drake's everything. Or rather, I don't hate his music, I know it's not for me, I can see the quality in it.

13269543, his haters, how hard it is to be on top, women and his insecurites

It'll be interesting to see how the public receives it.

Giving a dead beat dad a pass for black face

Shit is sad. There is sooo much great music
out there that is easily accessible.

Then again, anyone who took Drake seriously

1. beggars dont feel like being choosers right now.
theres such a lack of good quality (by previous standards) music that people are willing to give a pass to a lot of shit just to subdue their starvation. im not really a drake fan but i will take him over dookieboy and lil opioid.

2. rap fans aint rap fans anymore.
the majority of drakes audience are the same people that have logic and g eazy selling out venues even while black people have very little idea who they are or think theyre generally corny. the people that think the shoot dance started on fortnite and are still doing it with the wrong arm/leg combo. they dont care about your silly hip hop principles. they just want ig captions.

13269637, honest question
Posted by double negative, Tue Jun-26-18 11:57 AM
what would have been your ideal situation/response here?

honestly.
13269676, most folks admit he took an L

I don't think the hip hop community has turned their backs on a rapper since Ja Rule
13269742, The ideal response to me would have been to respond in kind
Posted by silenttype, Tue Jun-26-18 02:05 PM
Show some heart. Some competitive fire. Even if you don't
have no tabloid salacious shit- fire back.
I mean- it's a battle..You was eager with the shit before..
IDGAF what dude said about you when it was his turn
When you battlin'- all you waiting for is the mic back

As a 'creative', you should be chomping at the bit to
say some shit back to a guy who just exposed you

What is NOT ideal is to not only not respond, but have
someone else speak for you stating that they advised you
to fall back on some type 'it's better for the other guy' type bs

I believe he realized he had been baited and jumped the gun
and the other guy hit him with a jab that he could tell was
a warm up with much more to come.

The same fans that allowed 'Back to Back' to be a thing
should keep that same energy and have homie hold that L

Ionno...

I dont really love any of those records outside of IWW & Distant Relatives.. and DR was as much a Marley show as anything else..

Illmatic and IWW are certified... and So Far Gone and Take Care are his closest to IWW but not touching Illmatic...

Drake overall quality level and output is consistently higher though.
13271234, Nas two classics and the lost tapes. The rest is b- and lower.
Posted by 81 DUN, Fri Jun-29-18 01:42 PM

Drake doesn't have a bad album in my unbiased opinion. WTF was this Nas on good music trash? Nas lost and went through far less than Drake after getting on as an artist.
13271404, sad part is Nas wants to be on that crossover Drake level badly fails badly
Posted by 81 DUN, Sat Jun-30-18 09:03 AM
13271474, What ? Nas hasn't trend-chased since Stillmatic.
Posted by Brew, Sun Jul-01-18 03:44 PM
In the late 90s you could definitely argue that he was desperately trying to crossover but since Jay got at him and he refocused, Nas hasn't done anything to indicate that he cares about crossing over.
13271644, What ? You haven't heard Hero, That Chris Brown song, Summer on Smash.
Posted by 81 DUN, Mon Jul-02-18 04:39 PM
All them songs are terrible. It's hard to be a Nas fan sometimes.
13271681, I don't consider those trend chasers tho
Posted by Brew, Mon Jul-02-18 09:22 PM
Attempts at radio / pop tracks maybe. But I don't really think he was blatantly chasing trends. I dunno. They are shitty songs but didn't reek of desperation to me.

Drake is nice but on a lot of these "harder" songs dude sounds bored. There is no emotion when he spits half the time.. I know that shit works for him but it feels like dude is reading a book report of hot lines on half of these songs. Dope ass lines tho.

"Mt Rushmore is my face with 4 different expressions"

nigga, that line is tuff as fuck

but IMO he puts more emotion into the sappy shit I don't fuck with.

I'm going to edit this long ass album down.. wish he did the same.

You think you can decipher that by merely listening? All real experts know you need to print out the lyrics to every song, circle the sixth letter in each word, write all of those letters on another piece of paper, cut them up, draw them randomly from an old Toronto Blue Jays hat and arrange them on a corkboard, then you pour a thin layer of lemon juice over the board and hold it up to a mirror. Then it spells out "Pusha T? More like Pusha P, as in pee-pee."

Pretty ruthless, Push might have to retire after this.

Drake is independent after this and doesn't need a label any more so he gets all the money.

That's why he waited so long to drop 2 birds 1 stone only for Push to go quiet, wait a few years, then reignite a beef out of nowhere for no good reason with another diss record. How many songs are auto-tune free on this? Because that MJ one I streamed sounded like he autotuned everything - his vocals - the beat - and even MJ.

https://www.forbes.com/sites/bryanrolli/2018/06/28/drake-scorpion-already-platinum/#425cea24e7f9

After months of stratospheric singles, nostalgic music videos and cataclysmic beefs with other rappers, Drake has finally released his long-awaited fifth studio album, Scorpion. The mammoth double album contains 25 tracks, giving listeners plenty to sink their teeth into for weeks to come. But before fans even have time to form a proper opinion on Drake’s new effort, Scorpion has become the definitive blockbuster album of the summer, as it’s already eligible for a platinum certification from the RIAA.

This milestone should come as no surprise to anybody following Drake’s unprecedented chart run throughout the first half of 2018. The Canadian MC instantly rocketed his single “God’s Plan” to the top of the Billboard Hot 100 upon its release in January, where it stayed for 11 straight weeks—the first song to accomplish such a feat since Boyz II Men and Mariah Carey’s “One Sweet Day” in 1995-1996. “God’s Plan” was eventually certified 7x platinum in the United States for sales and streams exceeding seven million equivalent units, and when it finally surrendered the top spot on the Hot 100, it was to another Drake single.

That would be “Nice for What,” which dominated airwaves and streaming playlists upon its release in April. “Nice for What” debuted atop the Hot 100, making Drake the first artist in the U.S. to replace a No. 1 debut with another No. 1 debut. The track has ultimately spent seven non-consecutive weeks atop the Hot 100 and became eligible for a 3x platinum certification for sales and streams exceeding three million units, per Chart Data.

Together, “God’s Plan” and “Nice for What” have shifted more than 10 million equivalent units. Ten track units equal one album sale, which means Scorpion has already shifted one million equivalent units on the strength of its first two singles, making it eligible for a platinum certification upon submission to the RIAA.

Despite its platinum eligibility, the pre-release figures for “God’s Plan” and “Nice for What” (along with Top 20 single “I’m Upset”) won’t count toward Scorpion’s first-week tally. Not that Drake needs to worry, given his track record. His last proper full-length album, 2016’s Views, debuted atop the Billboard 200 and moved 1.04 million units in its first week. Similarly, his 2017 “playlist” More Life topped the charts and moved 505,000 units in its first week, setting a first-week streaming record that Post Malone’s Beerbongs & Bentleys now holds. With 25 tracks, Scorpion all but guarantees huge, if not record-breaking, streaming numbers in its first seven days, following a recent trend of Herculean rap albums that are optimized for the streaming era.

Notably, Drake has released Scorpion during the first week of Billboard’s new streaming algorithm, which assigns more weight to streams from paid subscription services than free, ad-supported services. But, as Hip-Hop Lately notes, Drake likely has an older fan base that’s more willing to pay for a streaming subscription than fans of Post Malone or XXXTentacion, so the new streaming rules shouldn’t hinder his sales too greatly. Hits Daily Double predicts the new formula could even increase Drake’s first-week figures.

Ultimately, Drake must be held to different commercial standards than his peers because of the staggering success he’s achieved in the past. But if his chart dominance in the first half of 2018 serves as any indication, then the already-platinum eligible Scorpion should dominate the rest of the summer and beyond.

the new Billboard metric was created because no one buys music anymore

streaming numbers do not equate to record sales
13271471, projections are currently 870-920k equivalent album units for the week
Posted by Reeq, Sun Jul-01-18 03:23 PM
with 275-300k pure sales.

https://www.complex.com/music/2018/07/first-week-sales-projections-for-drake-scorpion

apparently pre-release streams for the 2 big singles dont count toward first week sales. but i could have sworn the hotline bling streams helped push 'views' past platinum in the 1st week. this shit is way too convoluted.
13271473, the 2 singles get counted second week

Posted by dafriquan, Sat Jun-30-18 07:07 AM
Enough to make him record at least 3 or 4 new songs for an album that was already finished. I don't think that's a bad thing for music because it gave Drake a few new things to talk about. But in a battle context, it cements his L. And the album description on Apple music does not help either.

I have only listened to the album once but off the bat it's a good album. It is better than all of the Kanye 7 track releases except maybe Daytona which is just tighter. My only complaint is that Scorpion is too long but as is always the case with Drake, his weakest shit like is some teenager's favorite jam. There are certain type of beats that I just can't get into.

Ps Drake is too big to fail. So for everybody salivating like his downfall is near, it's not gonna happen. At least not from a diss. In 1 year, Adonis will be a footnote and Drake will bring Pusha on stage for OVO Fest.
13271399, Yeah. The whole “watch how much he sells after the battle” was silly

Ya. I loved it.
All the records were dope.

I thought Infrafred was a cute lil jab that would go unresponded.
Then I heard Drake's "Duppy" and got fired up. The stray shots at Kanye were also hilarious to me. But when Pusha dropped "Adonis", I wanted to call a truce...lol. Not because I didn't think Drake could respond but because I could tell Pusha was ready to do this Super Ugly shit all summer long. He's got alot of time on his hands. lol. He would have set Drake up to kill his own brand in order to get at him squarely. I don't know if Pusha planned it like this but it was kinda genius.

"only dead beats are the ones we rapping over", nah, dude rap-beefed you into making apologies, confessions, quite possibly changed his whole album content, I disagree with the post above about him flipping L's into wins, nah, not this time

"Emotionless" is why we get "Drake the type nigga. . ." memes

"Nonstop" is that shit, almost better than "Come Back Baby"

all the gangsterisms sound funnier than ever coming from him, if J Prince can cancel your beef you not going to do shit to anybody lol

memory fuzzy but the r&B side should have been dissected and throw the best ones with the best rap cuts

what the hell is "Summer Games" though? thats some shit for Molly Ringald and Judd Nelson to stare at each other from across the room to

forgetting the rest of my jokes, the stanbase will keep him straight and that r&b side is about 70% meh

if would have been all rap with maybe 3 of the slow songs he would have had his recognizable classic and not just the arguable one in Take Care

We’re surrounded by side-picking / this or that all the time. It seeps into your subconscious sometimes.

The albums? Both are pretty good. After falling into a rabbit hole with Dissect over the last week or so, I’m going to try to learn from Cole and listen some more before I go much further than that.

I’m far enough to say this: I hope Aubrey doesn’t get a cookie cuz he rapped a lot on this album. If so, I’m like ‘but black dynamite, he’s a rapper!’. Yes, I’m saying this in the Chocolate Giddy-up ‘but black dynamite, I sell drugs to the community!’ voice.

Also, I’m not in love with what the 7-songs a week deal did to all 5 of those Kanye releases. I’m assuming hella folks won’t come anywhere close to giving even 3 of those albums significant play before moving on. Add in that so much music has shown up recently and it’s a rough time to want to give stuff a slew of listens.

Last thing: I hope that we aren’t in the process of making the same mistake with Kanye as we did with MJ and Prince. It damn sure feels like we are tho.

same thing seemed to happen to Ye and a few other artist. The guy next to the guy who might really be the one who is influencing the sound the most moves on and all a sudden the songs just don't hit like they used to.

its hard to keep the same energy/quality for 10 years or however long dude has been at it.
13271563, I think the playlist format makes it hard to compare to albums
Posted by Buddy_Gilapagos, Mon Jul-02-18 10:47 AM
It clear why someone would go this route versus releasing several albums or EPs. You just end up getting more spins if it is one long playlist versus 3 or 4 EPs. It is shaping up like this Album/Playlist will end up getting more spins then all Kanye EPs combined just by virtue of people hiting play and listening to it continuously as oppose to jumping around to different EPs (I still haven't heard the Cudi Kanye EP all the way).

But you'll never have a GREAT Album if it includes 25+ tracks.

I will do the same thing I did with More Life, I make my own playlist with only the tracks I want and it will still be as long as your average album and would arguably be a great album.

I don't think Albums are dead but it does seems like a new way people get music with the EPS, Playlist, etc.

I've liked bruh's music over the years. This one is, IMO, his third lackluster (not having a ton of replay value to me) project in a row.

I do like "Emotionless" though. It immediately had me thinking of Re-Up Gang's "Emotionless" and whether or nt Drake was taking a shot at Pusha again some kinda way. Plus, I dig the dude's stance on keeping the IoT away from his son. Ain't no need for anyone to know who his son is or what he looks like until the kid makes that choice himself.

"I'm Upset" is a terrible song. And if I say that, I get "Oh you were gonna hate it anyway because it's Drake."

No, I actually like some of Drake's songs. But he also has some that I think are pretty bad. Most of his albums have songs that I really dig and at the same time, some songs that I think are horrible.

Quiet as kept, I can't stop humming "Don't Matter To Me" to myself. As of right now, it's the stand out track to me.

The Joe Budden podcast that is basically a gossip companion to the album is hilarious...

- Leaves

- Ye clocks him... next time they are in studio vibe is different.. more people around working on new Ye

- Leaves again

- Daytona drops shots fired

- I JUST CAME FROM OVER THERE (c) Drake

- Drops Duppy

- Ye tells Push everything Drake told him in confidence earlier in the studio as ammo for new diss

- Story Of Adidon drops

- Drake is ultimately really still pissed at Ye.... Push is just an attack dog... wants to be PETTY and go there..

- Ye calls J Prince the day his album drops to make peace.. then sends tweet

- J prince squashes it

- Drake decides the best way to respond is with subs and Jay-z features on Side A.

It's surprising to me that he even got back in the lab with Ye at all after their falling out. In his Semtex interview from last year he talked about how he had to scrap their joint album because of what Kanye was saying about him on stage. He seemed pretty sour on the whole relationship and vowed to keep his operation more in house

“You know, the more and more this progresses, the more and more I just feel like keeping to myself, because it’s just so unpredictable. You never know which way people are gonna go"

Given how strong his OVO team of producers and artists is, and how shaky industry people can be, this seems like a good strategy for Drake. So it raises the question of why did he try to reignite his creative relationship with Kanye knowing what the risks are?

You realize that both Toronto and London have huge West Indian communities that so much that our slang is all patois right? It's why all them Grime and UK Drill scenes understand us and we understand them.

When I hear you NY kats saying finna and any other southern slang or drawls you dont see the rest of the world going hey stop stealing other peoples slang or accents LOL Fucking idiots. Stop trying to tell other countries and cultures how to act when clearly in your own country dealing with other cultures is like a fucking rubix cube while blind.

Then you get all this he's doing this flow and that flow or even sounds? But it wasn't a problem when Hov did it during his run for our generation? SMH. Sit down. You just wanna pick and choose when to be offended.

Anywhoo, this is another W for Drake's legendary run. 25 songs should be enough for Drake fans to last for a good year. Excuse me while I head back to Dreamville and rep my favorite artist minus the songs about his first time and/or wet dreams.

13272683, The L for Drake was not responding and having J Prince bail him out.
Posted by Buddy_Gilapagos, Mon Jul-09-18 09:53 AM
That shit looked hella weak and you have to side eye all the tough guy songs on Scorpion.

However, the number one rule of music beef is the only real career destroying L is putting out wack music afterwards.

It's why Canibus, Ja Rule, Kool Moe Dee and MC Shan had career ending battles, and why Jay-Z, Nas, Ice Cube and Ricky Ross did not. The career-ending view of those battles have nothing to do with how vicious the disses were. It was how they came out afterwards.

fans get so funny when it comes to rap battles. This isn't a HS movie where a dude gets embarrassed and has to change schools because his rep is trash.

Drake simply lost a rap battle. That's it.

He will still sell out shows and make albums that sell.

y'all really trying hard to save dude from taking one L.

If anything it's on hold. again not sure why people say it's done because no official response. Altho it's clear he has you just refuse to acknowledge subs NOW but acknowledge they both did them prior. You can't pick and choose here. If the time of when he replies in question why isn't it in question when Pusha took 2 years to reply to drake after Two Birds...I'll wait for the ignoring of this fact or the excuse for it. Adidon overshadowed a double album release by your baby mama's favorite rapper

You are free to play Scorpion on repeat all day while you hug a pillow tight

The further out we get, the more Scorpion will fade...and the questions surrounding the battle will remain

Posted by Marauder21, Mon Jul-09-18 01:29 PM
in 2018.

Drake took an L, but it was never going to burn his whole career down. Prodigy's career didn't die after the Summer Jam Screen and that was far worse than anything Pusha did.

And then did Return of the Mac.

And this was someone who had virtually no pop stardom and absolutely needed support from the type of fans who Drake has never needed.

If you can't definitively say one of the hardest murder rappers in NY at the time being exposed as a ballerina (in 2001 at that) was a career killer, maybe the idea of a diss being a career killer should be re-evaluated.
