>that she's been helping Jidenna write and taught him that
>flow...
>
1) Jidenna has been rapping like that since before signing to Wondaland. His old performance videos might still be on youtube. This flow predates Monae.
2) Artists get help from their underlings or prodigies all the time. Big Pun wrote for Fat Joe. Jay-Z heavily borrowed from the little know Rocafella signees Chris N Neef (Young Gunz). Dr.Dre and DOC wrote and vocal coached every line out of early Eazy E (technically his label boss). The list goes on.
3)It is so clearly a Jidenna-assisted rap that I won't be surprised if his name is in the writing credits.
4) It's not uncommon for artists within a camp to write for each other when they hit a creative block or want something different.

No, not to me at least

and I found myself asking the same question recently with all of her high profile placements

she's not a knockout in the looks department

I haven't been blown away by her acting skills

I don't see it

and just to be fair

I also had the same thoughts about Carey Mulligan

average at best looks

not blown away by her acting

but we're suppose to buy her as the love interest of the Goslings and DiCaprios of the world

I don't see it.

I do enjoy the music, but she's hit as fuck to me.
13237413, prime example of why she felt the need .....
Posted by dapitts08, Sat Feb-24-18 07:56 AM

Lemmie get it out of the way now; not a fan of Monae as far as a her music is concerned(that's another post). BUT she's clearly one of the most talented black mainstream musical artists and was a top tier performer and musician in an era where we were impressed that Alicia Keys could play a piano like a 5th grader. I always respected the fuck outta her and what she was trying to do.

I always admired her work from hitting the ground fully formed, touring and dancing her ass off (with a full band) on some Brown shit...there was a period of time where it felt you couldn't intentionally avoid seeing her live cause she found a way to headline/open for every major act in every major city for like five years..

But Its fascinating to see someone very intentionally plotting her art in a very deliberate fashion and have large swaths of the public basically say fuck that. She was doing afrofuturism before it became a buzzword, high concept videos and performances that would put Bruno Mars to shame; clearly ahead of her time by almost a decade. But nobody gives a fuck about all that, they just want to know why she wears her hair like that and how she showing off/not showing off them titties re that Guardian interview she just did for this album cycle:

------------------------------

It’s an ugly phenomenon she has glimpsed on social media. “I see how people try to pit women against each other,” she says. “There are people who have used my image to slut-shame other women: ‘Janelle, we really appreciate that you don’t show your body.’ That’s something I’m not cool with. I have worn a tuxedo, but I have never covered up for respectability politics or to shame other women.

“I’m guilty feeling like I can’t just be,” she says. “Like either it’s this or it’s that, it’s black or it’s white. But there’s so much grey. And I think I’m kind of discovering the grey and realising it’s OK not to have all the answers, or to supply them.”

-------------------------------

Thing is while the bulk of it clearly has to do with ya good old sexism I can get why the public in general demands certain expectations and behaviors from the beautiful people it deems as celebs; pretty sure if Michael B Jordan decided his next role he was gonna play someone disfigured where you can see his face or muscles people would be like WTF. But it's funny how someone is working their ass off to give you this weird sci-fi motif, used to give interviews in character, etc...and everyone is still like 'yo, who you fucking, why you dressed like that'.

It just feels like a general lack of imagination we've got as a public. Its like nobody kept on pestering Prince why stayed dressed like a figure skater, why rhythm nation era janet jackson dressed like she was in the military ("are you trying to stop a coup?"). Its like the magic is kinda gone.
13237423, Can someone fact check that last paragraph?
Posted by Brotha Sun, Sat Feb-24-18 10:20 AM
I agree with all points until you claimed nobody cared about Prince's antics and who he was fucking. It's been an obsession since Color screen televisions.

Posted by BigReg, Sat Feb-24-18 12:43 PM
Prince hit the scene like a meteor and of course niggas were like wtf is this? Same with Michael, Bowie, Parliment-Funk, etc.

We a decade removed from her schtick and we still asking the same questions, lol. Its less about who she fucking; she’s a good looking celeb so of course sex is a big part of it. Thing is after awhile there was an acceptance of those dudes on their quirky face value where there isn’t with Monae. Like people weren’t asking Prince why wasnt he wearing timbs during the hip-hop era, lol. Usually we ride out at least to a certain extent with the vision, poor Monae doesnt even get that

13237430, RE: The post is weird and fascinating
Posted by double 0, Sat Feb-24-18 12:14 PM
You have a very simple answer...

Image has always been number 1 with Janelle... the aesthetic

not the music.

People will buy into anything if the art in of itself is genius... but when THAT isnt number 1 priority people will pick apart.

Janelle has been performance art before she is a musician who makes hits.. her music is aesthetically beautiful... but she doesnt have Killer songs

Prince made hits

Janet made hits

Bruno makes hits

Gage made hits - the minute Gaga stopped making hits AND stopped dressing up people like WTF.. put on the meat dress again so I can start jammin.

Hits give you good will. There is no doubt Monae is EXTREMELY Talented on multiple fronts.. but Janelle's image (and puff's promo) is what made her hang around in the zeitgeist so long. Her music has never been the core of her movement or staying power.

13237536, But her issue is that her genius is NOT making music.
Posted by Castro, Sun Feb-25-18 02:20 PM
Her genius is performing and essentially world building.

I'm not here for her body or who she's dating. I just can't connect with mediocre music, no matter how energetically its presented.
13237556, i disagree that her music is mediocre. so there's that.
Posted by Damali, Sun Feb-25-18 06:02 PM
there's also a difference between her being good at creating a visual aesthetic and folks feeling the need to constantly harp on whether or not she's "showing her body" and how nice her tits are.

d
13237558, I am not disputing the fact that she is objectified.
Posted by Castro, Sun Feb-25-18 06:20 PM
Clearly, we have work to do before we get to a moment where a woman isn't judged by appearance instead of talent, and I think Monae should be commended not for dressing conservatively or whatever it is folks think she was doing, but for just being so dogged in her pursuit of her artistic goals. That said, the music has never moved me. It always feels like show tunes, as if she is auditioning for a Vegas run.

13237559, and that's fine. it's not going to move everyone.
Posted by Damali, Sun Feb-25-18 06:29 PM

Roughly 2 and a half years ago I played this little party for Prince, and at one point he goes: Stop the music, I wanna play something. .... He opens his computer and plays a groove. Then this heavy synth hits and my 2 friends and I go simultaneously "oh shit!", he heard us and laughed. It was futuristic and so so good. Last night I heard Janelle Monae's new song. As soon as the synth came in, I went "oh shit! That's it!". He gave that to her. That man was such a pioneer, and so ahead of his time. I listened to Janelle's phone interview with Annie Mac yesterday, looks like Prince's beats and sounds will be thru out the album, she couldn't talk much, she choked up and said it's hard for her to talk about him, and that she misses him. This song is brilliant. Prince's genius continues to amaze me. I miss him 💜

it's like be sexy, but not so sexy that that's all men look at you for

Janelle has always put art before being a sex symbol, Im sure she will continue to do so

it's just strange that society is now focused on this with her, especially considering there's more porn than anyone should be able to consume available at our fingertips now

this is like a conquest, the one woman men weren't expecting to show skin does it and it's a victory I guess

lauryn hill was headlining this festival. Word spread that she was on the bus 'sick' and wouldn't be performing.
Janelle came out and tore it down. I guess Lauryn didn't want to be upstaged, all of a sudden she felt better after Janelle's performance. She did a subpar performance, folks were leaving in the middle of her set.

I became a fan of Janelle that night. This was back when Electric Lady first came out.

13250174, yeah, i've seen her 3 times. all 3 were disappointments
Posted by GROOVEPHI, Thu Apr-12-18 03:03 PM
The first time I saw her, she was headlining and she was 'sick'. She wasn't going to perform, but then came out and performed only 30 mins.

Second time she performed an entire set. But they were all different versions of her songs. didn't realize til later that it was the result of the lawsuit between herself and some writers on the album (think I read an article about that on here actually). Like, all the slow songs were sped up, fast songs were faster lol. Most joints had a ska/reggae rhythm. I literally saw people in the audience looking confused until she got to the chorus on most songs.

Third time, as described above, folks including my wife and I, walked out of that shit. She came on mad late and was a damn disappointment.

13484420, In thought dude was gay.. he has a new album out?
Posted by legsdiamond, Fri May-12-23 11:17 AM
I fux with his last album

13484423, you really thought he was gay?
Posted by tariqhu, Fri May-12-23 11:20 AM
what gave you that impression?
13484427, reminds me of a lot of dudes I went to college with at VCU
Posted by legsdiamond, Fri May-12-23 11:32 AM
niggas dated women but them niggas was gay

like my boy said “he’s gay, he just don’t know it yet”

Again, I thought he was gay. No idea if he is.

but all these new terms are just ways of saying a nigga gay without the hard G

pan sexual, poly.. okay nigga, you like niggas.

Still like his music and I could totally be wrong but I always thought the nigga was gay.
13484432, most men talking poly stuff are talking about mutliple women
Posted by tariqhu, Fri May-12-23 11:43 AM
for themselves. there are some that are cool with the women having multiple guys but that's not as common.

I was just wondering though because I never had a thought that he liked dudes. just thought he didn't fit with the narrow stereotype of men in hip-hop.
13484442, his poly appears to be the "i'm with multiple women at a time" kind.
Posted by PROMO, Fri May-12-23 12:08 PM
i watched a couple interviews he did recently.

there appears to be no question about that.
13484445, yeah.. okay

13484429, she's definitely made some shifts in her presentation.
Posted by tariqhu, Fri May-12-23 11:38 AM
along with the growth in her arts.
13484430, its just clothes
Posted by legsdiamond, Fri May-12-23 11:39 AM
but one can wonder if she is more comfortable in her skin or just wanted to do it on her time.

I’m sure Diddy wanted her to show them thangs day 1

Also a good idea to respect the music/art first and not just think titties day 1.
13484444, this seems like the progression she wanted in her own time.
Posted by tariqhu, Fri May-12-23 12:23 PM
and she wasn't going to the industry tell her how or when to be. not to say that she's wanted this the whole time. I'm sure there was a lot of internal back/forth with what to present as each album rolled out.

My cynic take also is younger women have nothing to prove. They know they bad in a potato sack. They get a little older they have to work a little more to remind people. Halle Berry waited until she was 33 to show them Jammers in Swordfish.

I think it's the opposite. younger women (people in general) have everything to prove. the women may get more attention, but they're trying to find themselves. age tends to bring more confidence and comfort with one's self.

Posted by double 0, Fri May-12-23 03:38 PM
She has had an issue with the “male gaze”

It never seemed like she was comfortable with it or wanted it in any way so she eliminated it by rocking the uniform and referring to herself in a non-sexual way “The android”

Once the world was built and I think maybe she gained more clarity in who she was in ther personal space she could shed that skin.

I love it… seems like she is enjoying herself and has built a dope creative world around her
13484482, Males still don't appear to be the focus

yeesh.... I'm a little disappointed, but not terribly surprised.

Right. Like to hell with the guys who aren't misogynistic, just fuck all male rappers because of the ones white media likes to shove in your face. As one of her staunchest supporters from the beginning, that one hurt. I backed away then. She's got the titty lovers now tho, so she doesn't need me lol.

Bothered you in that you thought she couldn't live up to it? Or you thought it was too judgmental? I'm interested in what way you found it bothersome.

Shoulda been a whole genre with feature films attached by now.

That model/actor money came easy I guess.
13484738, Honestly, nothing she's done since has really measured up.

Janelle's biggest song of her career was a feature on "We Are Young".

She never continued in that direction so I doubt it would have anything to do with commercial success
13484754, Good point.
Posted by spades, Wed May-17-23 05:05 PM
I never really 'heard' her on that cut. Was she on the instruments? What was her part?

She sings on the bridge, roughly 2/3rds through the song.
13484765, always felt like that was a label favor

like they just threw her on there.

if they removed her vocals I doubt anyone would notice

its like she was photoshopped into the video.

13484773, She wanted hit records. I played the Archandroid literally 1000
Posted by Teknontheou, Thu May-18-23 08:55 AM
times in those first 3 or 4 months after it came out. It's one of my favorite albums of the last 15 years. But there weren't any hits on there. Most of her singles since those early days were designed to be hit songs, meaning they had a sound that was in line with mainstream Black radio and music of the time.
13485224, RE: She wanted hit records. I played the Archandroid literally 1000
Posted by double 0, Sat May-27-23 07:54 PM
If she “wanted” hit records she would’ve let Bruno or Jeff Bhasker (“we are young”) write something for her… she had all the aesthetic but a killer songwriter would've taken her to the stratosphere.
13484756, her last album was her best to me.
