13222449, What y'all been watching on Netflix, lately?
Posted by Dstl1, Wed Dec-27-17 10:13 AM
Just finished watching Freeway: Crack in the System. All about the actual dude, Rick Ross and how he was the major player in the LA crack game. G-R-E-A-T documentary. Got a bunch of other stuff on deck to check out. Chappelle's new joint airs New Year's Eve, too.
13222451, Icarus is another good documentary
Posted by makaveli, Wed Dec-27-17 10:18 AM
i need to check that rick ross one out.
13222480, Gomorrah is must see tv IMO
Posted by makaveli, Wed Dec-27-17 11:27 AM
not new but it's great.

Phenomenal documentary, one of the best I've ever seen really...until I started to think of the premise of it all

Dude starts out as a test subject, trying to replicate Lance Armstrong's doping regiment

Which seems all well and good as a premise for a documentary

He consults with Don Catlin...who proposes he consult Grigory instead...

...and the subsequent premise of the documentary hinges on believing that a researcher/documentarian focused on illegal doping in sport was completely unfamiliar with the Russian doping scandal

I call bullshit.

We're suppose to believe the film maker unintentionally found himself personally immersed in the Russian doping scandal

which made for a brilliant film

but, being a documentary, that bit felt like complete fiction

yes, the Lance story was HUGE

BUT, the Russian doping story dwarfed the Armstrong story, and was actually being investigated at the same time as the Lance findings were being made public

at present, you can even see how much of a bigger deal the Russian doping scandal was, as we barely hear anything about Lance anymore

Great doc, but on the premise of being a documentary, I call bullshit on the unintended Russian angle.
13222455, I wanted to check that one out. Do they touch on Iran contra?

even had a paranoid moment when I couldn't find it in my recently watched queue and thought

"they already pulled it because it was too real!!"

Definitely shed more light on the CIA connection in particular William J. Casey who was an associate of Prescott Bush and I believe a Skull and Bones member also.

The documentary "Dark Legacy" links him to JFK IINM

13223346, yeah, Dark Legacy was pretty damn good...
Posted by Dstl1, Wed Jan-03-18 04:52 PM
they were name droppin like shit in that joint. I had heard about the George HW Bush connection to JFK, before. How he was in Dallas that day, etc.
13222463, nothing. im switching to hulu lol.

Same.

Netflix + Hulu Live (w/HBO) + Amazon Prime is the move. Prime could be dropped though.. the movies suck.. the shows are decent, but I mainly have it for the free shipping. Kinda sore they cancelled Mozart in the Jungle.

Nonstop tv entertainment in my household.

slightly cheaper than cable, but way more viewing options and easier to navigate
13290551, kinda agree about Prime...
Posted by Dstl1, Mon Oct-08-18 03:39 PM
I mean, I rock with it anyway because I order a lot of stuff, so the video is a throw-in. That Jack Ryan joint was pretty good, I binged that in one night. I recently watched Paid in Full (yeah, I know...but, I never gave it the time of day because I thought it was gonna be like some Master P, "I Got the Hook Up" type shit) I like that you can rent or buy movies digitally and keep them in your library. I may play around with it a little more, but Hulu and Netflix does the heavy lifting for most of my content.
13222465, thanks for this post, lol

I need recommendations because I’m almost done with shameless.

what about on the firestick too?
13222471, Dark filled the Stranger Things void
Posted by T Reynolds, Wed Dec-27-17 11:04 AM
Yah it's in German and overdubbed so it's a little hard to get into, but the cinematography and storyline are good enough to overcome that once you sit for a good 20 minutes

After binging Stranger Things season 2 in two days I was kinda at a loss

Ozark was dope. 4 out of 5 stars.

Just started Marco Polo last night. Surprisingly good. Good to see I got two seasons of that to look forward to

Punisher: I'm almost done with the season. Been taking my time with that one to prolong it.

13222475, Dark has dubs? I figured I was gonna have to read subtitles.
Posted by Oak27, Wed Dec-27-17 11:17 AM
13222478, nah it's overdubbed
Posted by T Reynolds, Wed Dec-27-17 11:19 AM
but being that english is a germanic language it's not quite as crazy as watching old kung fu flicks

cause sometimes the lips be matching
13223066, As an anime head I can't do overdubs
Posted by Madvillain 626, Tue Jan-02-18 03:47 PM
I'm doing German audio + English subtitles

Cot damn that cinematography in this joint is clean. I'm all in.
13222477, Oh also just started Master of None
Posted by T Reynolds, Wed Dec-27-17 11:18 AM
I think folks told me on here that Aziz in this show >>>>> Aziz in everything else and I didn't believe it

But damn it's true. I couldn't stand Aziz before this show, but he's funny as shit in this one.
13222497, very good show

The Netflix home page on my app is a garbage heap of unwanted sounds and disorganized links.

I think I'm going to go to the one month on/one month off approach and I'll have to research and make a list of when shows I'm interested in re on because their interface pushes shit I'm not at all remotely interested in and hides things I find interesting.

I think if you're way into unfunny comedy specials or unnecessary documentaries, or FRIENDS then Netflix is great!

Oh, I re watched some BoJack Horseman.

i watch it aaaallllll day especially at work i sit right in front of a tv

i love it

i have this weird thing about crime investigative shows, let me know if you feel me on this

so one reason i like forensic files is they get right down to the facts ya know?

they do minimal reenactment

i think the dramatizations and reenactments are the dumbest most wasteful shit so ill pretty much change the channel if im watching something that does that

13222725, The Good Place
Posted by BigReg, Thu Dec-28-17 11:30 PM
heard good things about it and I fuck with Kristen Bell and Ted Danson in his current pothead phase.

Its got a straightforward premise (an asshole who should have ended up in hell accidentally gets to heaven) and much of the comedy is modern sitcom (think Parks and Rec) of hanging out with goodie too shoes who are boring, etc.

But its much deeper then that and when the showrunners start to show their cards in the plot, holy shit. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. Its a breezy 22 minutes an episode with 13 episodes in the first season; ,you can knock it out in the background while doing shit.

But trust me, when you get a glimpse of where the writers wanna take it, you’re gonna be all in.

Also helps that outside of Danson/Bell the other characters are almost all POC.
13222858, I concur, the good place is sooo good
Posted by shygurl, Sat Dec-30-17 09:17 AM
They've only aired half of season 2, but the goodness continues if you haven't watched it. My favorite part is how the characters of color are absolutely more compelling characters than the white characters, they are all killing it.

its flawed but completely watchable and even entertaining imo.

when i think of the worst movie of the year (which critics were calling it)...i think of shit i turn on and cant sit through. this isnt anywhere near that at all.

i wouldnt have suggested anyone pay money to go see it in theaters.

Sam had a gun pulled on him three times and in the 7th season scenes in certain episodes cut between the original and remastered version, trying to watch all 11 then get on to Black Mirror. Bright was pretty cool other than that "fairy lives don't matter today" line.

been working on my vudu library too.

Posted by rorschach, Sun Dec-31-17 02:07 PM
Equanimity is brilliant. I prefer it over the first two Netflix specials easily. Lots of hilarious material and a really well done closing bit in this one.

The Bird Revelation is.....just different altogether. It has the feel of some those videos that leaked where Dave was working out new material. This one has some nice insights. I wouldn't be surprised if some people say they don't like this one. It's worth a watch just for hearing Dave Chappelle's two cents on the reaction to his trans jokes in Age of Spin and the sexual harassment scandals of 2017.

13223021, RE: What y'all been watching on Netflix, lately?
Posted by delariean, Tue Jan-02-18 12:53 PM
Voltron Legendary Defender....

Gotta say its take on the old show is very good...

The Toys that Made us

That Barbie ep was INFORMATIVE..did not know she was created from a call girl joke doll in Germany.
But the ruthless way that they got to "destroy" Jem and the Holograms (show I also watch in Netflix) was sad to think they thought that their products were first in stores.....in reality Jem the cartoon was on the air six months before Barribe and the Rockers were even a though.....

13223025, watched pretty much all that.. watching River now.

13223306, Honestly, its good BUT pretty monotonous
Posted by Firecracker, Wed Jan-03-18 02:52 PM

Which is apparent when you binge it; It doesn't really have story telling or character development like that, lacking layers.

I think its a dope show, it looks great, but it could use a bit more depth

Every ep is: Ok now we don't fuck with them, lets kill him, somebody dies, next ep rinse repeat. Not really much going on besides that

Overall cool, but a lil too repetitive for its own good

Posted by beatnik, Wed Jan-03-18 01:44 PM
that episode reminded me of Erica Garner so much, it's all coincidental of course but to see that episode turned out to be about revenge and released so close to her passing, and I got some OJ vibes but that's another conversation.

but on a lighter note, I like that they presented a shared universe between so many episodes, just makes that world they live in 10x's creepier and scary.

ol' girl running from the robot pissed me off though, should have hit it with the shotgun right after she threw the paint on it, her game plan was boo-boo.

It’s like Gotham to me. That’s another show I used to like but stopped watching due to time constraints.

I’m embarrassed it took that long for me to realize it was based on Archie. I heard all the names and even laughed at the Jughead hat before it clicked. It’s cheesy dark but it works for some reason.

Posted by MiracleRic, Mon Oct-22-18 01:31 PM
just started season one of big mouth...hilarious

atypical probably my fav of the least talked about shows on Netflix

Bordertown is a finnish mystery series that i liked a lot...really curious about a 2nd season bc the ending left a lot to be resolved i think

Hold the Dark was...something else...it was jarringly violent, meditative, confounding, and still somehow cathartic. i wouldn't recommend it to anyone unless you really just wanted to be confused in a dope setting

oh yea...i really liked iron fist season 2...kinda hoping they do something to flesh out what happens after with Misty and Colleen and a few other things but we'll see how this netflix/disney streaming fight plays out

glow season 2 was just as good as season 1...probably better actually

13298857, Ronnie Coleman: The King
Posted by Dstl1, Mon Nov-26-18 12:57 PM
Stumbled upon this one Friday and watched it 3 times, this weekend. As a bodybuilding nerd since the mid 80's, this one really hit me. No one with any sense does not consider Ronnie the greatest bb of all time. To see him now, after the effects of his punishingly heavy lifting style, saddened me. It was cool to hear his contemporaries show reverence to how dominant he was, too...even though his very existence kept a few of them from ever realizing their goal of winning a Sandow. Kevin Levrone, Sean Ray, Flex Wheeler, Victor Martinez, Jay Cutler, Dorian Yates...all universally hold him as the best ever. Really good doc.
13299110, great doc.

13299241, i felt so motivated to work out after watching it
Posted by BrooklynWHAT, Wed Nov-28-18 03:28 PM
i realized i forgot to add my thoughts.

the two most interesting dudes to me were Kevin and Jay. Jay just looked flat out exasperated at the idea of Ronnie and what it took to compete against him.

Kevin seemed supercharged like he was just honored to be up there with him and have competed alongside him.

it was cool to see 2 dudes who clearly (at least in the doc) revere RC and how they both expressed it differently.

i cant wait to tell my folks about the doc. for some folks that just worked out casually they were always into the olympia shit and we stayed having fitness mags around the house.
13299244, Great points on those two...
Posted by Dstl1, Wed Nov-28-18 03:50 PM
I followed this shit SO closely for so long. I can't imagine what Jay had to feel...at that time. Like you said, you could still hear it in him in the doc. In 2005, he was better that Ronnie...flat out. He was better. Ronnie won, anyway. That had to be crushing. I thought there were to really cool things Jay said which sums up how most of them felt about Ronnie...He said after he finally beat him in 2006, he felt bad for Ronnie...LOL. He was supposed to be hyped he won his first Olympia and he felt bad that he dethroned the King. Secondly...he said to be clear...I didn't beat Ronnie at his best. Cuz, he knew he could never beat the best Ronnie. No one could.

Kevin had the best quote of the doc, IMO when he said "if you're not willing to go to that place...where he's going...and train like that, and withstand that, and live like that and do that and do that and do that...you don't have a chance against him"

13299247, alright so...you should LISTEN to the podcast first.
Posted by double negative, Wed Nov-28-18 03:56 PM
aight, lemme nerd out for a minute as to why this show although slow moving is actually dope.

Upfront I think if you listen to podcast first then you will get a lot more out of the show which admittedly moves slow as fuck.

dunno if you know about gimlet media but they are becoming a bit of a thing

rewind to two, three years ago 'This American Life' and 'Planet Money' contributor decides to start up a podcasting network. In doing so he started a podcast called 'Startup' and its all about his struggle and triumph over making his podcasting network become a thing. META.

Then over the past two years more shows are added and they are growing at a tremendous rate.

A year ago they started releasing serialized story form podcasts starting with Homecoming. What made it so dope was the great story AND the cast. Like out of nowhere its all big names behind the voices.

Then in this year that radio drama became a fucking TV show.

They also have two other really fucking dope story form shows, 'Sandra' and 'The Horror of Dolores Roach'

which is crazy when I think about it. Sam Esmail directed Mr Robot. Mr Robot has Bobby Carnnavale (when did he become dope?!) on the cast. Sam Esmail also directed Homecoming which also features...Bobby Carnnavale. Gimlet's other story show, The Horror od Dolors Roach has, you guessed it, Bobby Carnavale as a main character.

Anyway, show link:

i still found homecoming riveting.

it moves slow but it's intentional, because every shot is, for the most part, very thought out. that slow flow is so that the viewer can appreciate all the visual stimuli and care that was put into the "filmmaking" of it.

it sounds very snobby, i get it. but if you can appreciate that then you'll probably dig it. if not you might find it boring although i thought the story was suspenseful enough to keep most people interested.
13302577, damn I forgot about Mr Robot.

>-SuperStore(this shit is hilarious) on Hulu

This show is a riot. It's essentially "The Office" in a big box store. And having worked in a Sam's Club in college, I really feel it.
13299248, It really really is. Also, America Ferrera kinda fine.

documentary by Deeyah Kahn who spends time with white nationalist leaders (current and former) to try to get some sense of what drives them to these movements.

I found her approach pretty interesting. She's not pretending not to judge them. She's very straight up with these guys saying she's a lefty activist muslim feminist who finds everything they stand for disgusting and wrong, but she's somehow approaching them in a way that cracks through them.. almost like a therapist. they all seem to genuinely like and respect her, and feel uncomfortable knowing the kind of shit she takes from people like them for just existing . She winds up with some of them through the whole charlottesville thing. literally marching with them while filming, and visits with them months after.

She also talked to Richard Spencer and Jared Taylor who somehow come off far more subhuman and irredeemable than the so-called blue collar nazis from earlier in the doc (which is saying a lot because those guys were saying some truly disgusting shit). Spencer especially is pretty much a parody of an 80s movie yuppie villain.

It was outright tremendous. Loved the dialogue. "Sweet birthday baby !!" has been stuck in my head all week. Makes me smile whenever I think of it.

Great show. Also led to me researching Natasha Lyonne and finding out about her crazy struggles and resurrection. I probably heard something about her problems in passing at the time but I definitely forgot all about it. She's fortunate it played out just before iPhones and social media.

13313308, Fascinating theory on the underlying meaning of the show SPOILERS
Posted by Brew, Tue Feb-12-19 07:27 PM
Lyonne even seemingly co-signed it in the comments. I was saying to my buddy earlier that I subconsciously knew that there had to be something to the 80s/early 90s aesthetic, and all the seemingly random things sprinkled throughout the episodes, i.e. the homeless dude/his shoes, the parade a the end, etc. And I'd been hoping someone would put it all together for me at some point lol.

And what made him so scary is how he correctly was able to gauge what would be the bigger scandal in a small town LDS community. He could manipulate her parents because he knew on some level that the ingrained sexism/homophobia will trump any horror people had at what he did. And he was right! She got shunned from their church for having an affair with another man, he got to do some BS counseling and was forgiven for kidnapping and marrying a child. He knew that her dad would be more scared of the handjob story, even if it meant endangering his daughter again.

Reminds me a little of Andrew Cunanan counting on the fact that the murders of gay men would be taken less seriously by the police.

That was the first time I heard a counter to the story surrounding his murder.

Similar to that Teddy P doc on Showtime.
There was only one person in that car with a dick.
And I never knew there was history of his vehicles being sabotaged. Also, homeboy who arrived on the scene, I feel like he might have been involved in running him off the road into the tree.

there wasnt a larger conspiracy at play. They set him up, robbed him for the money he had been flashing around all night, he made a fuss and she or someone else shot him. And the cops didnt care to dig any further so they took her at her word. Tragic and sad.
