13213419, If you got invited to the white house to meet Trump, would you go?
Posted by PimpTrickGangstaClik, Fri Nov-17-17 09:20 AM
I just saw that the South Carolina women's basketball team declined invite. That along with the GS Warriors and others who have refused to meet with Trump.

If you won some award and got invited to a photo-op with the pres, are you declining on principle?

I'm not. I'm putting on my best suit and smile and shaking the Cheetos hand. How many times in life will you get to meet the POTUS?
I don't care who is sitting in that office. I am meeting him
13213420, I'd go, but under the condition that there are no press photos taken...

13213436, Meeting the pope is a once in a lifetime opportunity.

Meeting the president of the United States happens quite frequently for a number of people. Additionally since the role has the chance to legally change every four years; between campaign stops for others, factory tours, volunteer work photo ops, lottos to visit, west wing connections, lobbying circles, and social events, etc ... the number of opportunities to meet a president is actually pretty large.
13213444, I don't want to meet the pope either...

13213433, PSA: Anyone can get a tour of the white house.
Posted by Buddy_Gilapagos, Fri Nov-17-17 09:32 AM
There is a process for it.

https://www.whitehouse.gov/participate/tours-and-events

It might take a couple of years before they can make it happen but its the peoples house.

DOn't think Trump could be the only ticket to get into the white house.

Nah its no honor in shuffling. Trump is not a prop he is part of the foundation. Yeah it's bigger than him because it birthed him.

Woodrow Wilson screened Birth of a Nation at the White House. Andrew Johnson unleashed his destruction from the White House.

That's the place it's an honor to be invited for that type of thing ? Given it's history ?

Smh at this

"The president allowed us to go into the Oval Office. I've had the opportunity to be here a few times. He's the first President to allow us to do that," Henry shared."

"The teams brought some presents for the White House as well. The women brought a pair of boots and the men brought team jackets for President Trump."

13213789, Oh so you're anti WH visits in general. Not anything to do w/ Trumpito?

their opinions in person. I do feel like there have been a lot of missed opportunities with the invite declining. I can't quantify them, but I feel like there might have been a more constructive and productive way to move on them.

It was once a sign of protest, but I fear that it's lost its punch now.

Posted by FLUIDJ, Fri Nov-17-17 02:42 PM
resulting from a few well placed, planned & themed visits from these teams might have made a bigger statement than just declining an invite.

These declinements (is that the word? lol) are starting to serve his "I'M trying but folks are being rude" narrative. I think they could very well spread out into a larger narrative & spin that works against us in the long term... I dunno... just my thoughts...

I passed.

Full disclosure: he wasn't 45 yet. This was in Sept. 15, the primaries had just started
he was the clown candidate, remember there were like 15 repug candidates for prez
No one took him seriously. He was supposed to drop out after Jeb! won the first couple of primaries.

Anyway I saw him, Ted Cruz, and Palin at the Capitol. I went to this anti- Iran deal rally for work purposes and there he was strutting down the steps to the Capitol lawn

There were mad tea baggers there, anti-45 protesters too
that day was hot, muggy, and humid: perfect "swamp" weather
So he comes down, no security, no secret service, just a couple of Capitol police officers behind him
no metal detectors that day, anyone could literally walk up to stand in front of the podium.

He gets to the lawn and the tea baggers start going apeshit
he's waving, shaking hands, etc
I inched close and got right in front of him, snapped this pic:

https://imgur.com/a/fkqSl

For context, it was this kind of event:

https://imgur.com/a/8xZDm

Today, I'll pass again. I'm good.

Knowledge and self respect is missing from most of the logic going into that decision to meet someone who is taking every action to marginalize you. But if you knew better you'd do better.
13213652, What would make me a pawn? I'm being recognized by the USA
Posted by PimpTrickGangstaClik, Fri Nov-17-17 02:29 PM
Trump just so happens to be the representative at the time.

If I won the Olympic gold, it would be an honor to be recognized for that accomplishment by visiting the White House. It's standard procedure.
The fact that Trump is in office should force me to bypass that honor

If I had an opportunity to speak, I would go, because that platform could be very valuable no matter who is on office and even more valuable, arguably, with someone like him there.

If it was just a smile, nod, handshake, photo op thing, I might say fuck it and not go. All depends on context.

The sports team thing is tough. I think you have to weigh if you make more of a statement declining or accepting.

Used the name "Pocahontas" as a slur against Elizabeth Warren
Made a "chief" joke to John Kelly
Stated that he didn't know what the code talkers had done
Did all of this in front of a portrait of virulent anti-Native American Andrew Jackson

These Native Americans aren't being honored by Trump. They are being honored by the United States (via the White House) for their service in the war.

Trump is an abhorrent man. But the White House is bigger than the man currently occupying the office. This is my belief.

I'm not going to look down on these veterans for going to the White House and receiving these recognitions

DZ: What about seeing Ali as someone who was standing up to racism?

GF:I didn’t think about it like politics. Standup to something? We didn’t even know there was something to stand up to. Politics didn’t even exist. I lived in a world where I was striving to get a scrap of food, striving to get a job. And the newspapers didn’t report on Ali as much as you would think. Even the black newspaper wouldn’t talk about him. So we didn’t know everything that was going on around him.

DZ: In 1968, you won the gold medal at the Mexico Olympics, and then famously waved a small American flag and bowed a few short days after Tommie Smith and John Carlos made their black power salute on the medal stand. Tell us about the 1968 Olympics.

GF: I’m living in the Olympic Village at the time with all the other athletes. And I was loving it. And Smith and Carlos and Beamon loved it too. The track and field guys back then were the celebrities, the rock and roll stars, the beautiful guys at the village. Everywhere they walked people said, there’s Smith and Carlos! They loved it too. We were like a family. And we were all focused on trying to win our own gold medals so we didn’t feel the outrage, the controversy after they raised their fists. So when they were immediately send home and sent packing we were all like, “How can they do that?” And they were just dismissed. I thought about going home myself. We all did. I’ll never forget seeing John Carlos walk past the dormitory when he was sent packing with all these cameras following him around and I saw the most sad look on his face. This was a proud man who always walked with his head high, and he looked shook. That hurt me and it made us all mad. Forget about the flag. This was our teammate…. We loved each other and it made us mad. It made us shook.

DZ: When you waved the flag and bowed it was seen as a reaction, a rebuke of Smith and Carlos. Were you asked to do that?

GF: No way. It was spontaneous and had nothing to do with them. I always carried a small American flag red white and blue with me so people would know I was from America. Also it was tradition to bow to each judge after a fight so the next time you get points. And I wanted the world to know where I was from. I wanted to say to the world, “We gotcha.” America gotcha.

DZ: What was the reaction back home?

GF: Most people thought it was great, but then something happened that caused me more pain than I ever felt as an individual. I was a happy 19 year-old boy, and some people came up to me in the 5th ward and said, “How can you do that when the brothers are trying to do their thing?” They thought I betrayed them. That people would think that caused great pain.

DZ: If you had to do it all over would you still wave the flag?

GF: If I had to do it all over I’d wave three flags! I feel that I had been rescued from the gutter by America. One day I was under the gutter, chased by police, thinking dogs were going to get me. I laid there listening to the dogs and the gutter. The next day there I am standing on the Olympic platform and you hear the anthem. I was proud. Thanks to the Job Corps, I had a chance. I had three meals a day and a chance. LBJ started this war on poverty from 1964 and that’s why I would wave three flags. I know there are a lot of guys who had to do their thing to make a political stand. But some of us felt very separated from that. In 1968 there were people organizing to get us to boycott the Olympics. Did you know only approached the college guys? The guys who competed in college? Not one of us high school dropouts were ever asked to be part of what they were doing. They never asked the poor people to join. And I didn’t like being called or set apart as a “Black athlete.” I was an American athlete…. I got a chance from this country and when I go to Africa or Germany, or anywhere else in the world, people don’t see me as black, but as an American. (laughs) Not that that is always a good thing.

Like this guy: https://www.theatlantic.com/news/archive/2017/07/trump-awards-medal-of-honor-to-army-medic/535506/

That award has nothing to do with Trump. He was simply presenting it. Should dude have declined because of his disdain for Trump (if he had disdain)?

I wouldn't accept an invite for something minor or if I was part of a sports team. But if I did something worthy of being honored by the office of the president, in there.

I'm not going to be cheesing or anything (that was jokes early in the post). But I'll solemnly accept the award, shake his hand, snap a pic, and be out

Not that barbershop type of hate. That Dr J is better type of hate. But just that dude is a dirtbag and he doesn't get why people worship him. Recognized his basketball skill but didn't know that man and didn't let me worship him.

We used to go to the Cowboys training camp back when it was in Austin. Closest we could afford (free) for the NFL and people would go Gaga over that shit. He's politely get autographs for me, but wouldn't degrade himself to hunt down an Aikman or Smith in the way that other men did.

They were all basketball players and all football players representing a myriad of things. But at the end of the day they were just men.

A lot of people get caught in the titles. That man plays for the Chicago Bulls, that man plays for the historic Dallas Cowboys, that man was chosen to be the face of James Bond ... but the title doesn't imbue the men with anything. And if anything the men shape how we see the title and what the title is.

And that's something I'd never be able to get over with most men. Recognizing, even farcically, that they were something different than who they are because they have a title. Which is why there's nothing you can say to me about smiling and shaking Donald Trumps hand, just because he has a title. Because he is a terrible human being and you'd have to be willing to denigrate yourself, to pretend he's not.

Additionally, if a person like Donald Trump can hold the office. How prestigious is that office anyways.
13225511, I feel you. Respect

Patriots coach Belichick declines Medal of Freedom from Trump

By Tim McLaughlin

BOSTON (Reuters) - New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick said on Monday he has decided not to accept the Medal of Freedom from U.S. President Donald Trump in the wake of last week’s siege of the Capitol by the president’s supporters.

Politico reported on Sunday that Trump had planned to bestow the highest civilian honor on Belichick.

Trump faces an attempt by Congressional Democrats to remove him from office after he urged supporters to march on the Capitol during a rally where he repeated false claims that the Nov. 3 election was “rigged” against him.

At least five people died in the attack.

“I was offered the opportunity to receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom,” Belichick said in a statement. “Subsequently, the tragic events of last week occurred and the decision has been made not to move forward with the award.”

Belichick said above all he was an American citizen “with great reverence for our nation’s values, freedom and democracy.

“I know I also represent my family and the New England Patriots team,” he continued. “...Remaining true to the people, team and country I love outweigh the benefits of any individual award.”

The White House was not immediately available for comment.

News that Belichick was being lined up for the Medal of Freedom sparked widespread negative reaction on social media.

“If this story about Bill Belichick accepting a Medal of Freedom from the disgraced occupant of the White House is true, he’s dead to me,” Bob Ryan, a Boston Globe sports columnist emeritus, wrote on Twitter. “Say it ain’t so, Bill.”

In 2016, Trump read a glowing letter from Belichick while on the campaign trail, in which the coach praised his courage and leadership.

It was criticized by some fans but did not seem to affect Belichick’s standing with players in the locker room. Robert Kraft, owner of the Patriots, is also friendly with Trump.

The U.S. president has had a long-running fight with the National Football League over players kneeling during the national anthem, a gesture that was first adopted by some Black players to protest against racial disparities in the criminal justice system.

Trump called on the league to ban players from kneeling in protest.

In the Patriots’ home state of Massachusetts, Trump received only 32% of votes cast in the presidential election in November.

Joe Biden is set to be sworn in as the 46th U.S. president on Jan. 20.

“Bill is on the spot here,” Dan Shaughnessy, a long-time sports columnist for the Boston Globe, said before Belichick’s statement. “If he receives the award, it makes things difficult for him in his locker room and in this community.”

With the Patriots slumping to their first losing season since 2000, Belichick needs good relations with players and prospective free agents as they look to shore up deficiencies on their roster.

Belichick’s teams have won a record six Super Bowl championships but this season the Patriots posted a 7-9 record without star quarterback Tom Brady, who is gunning for a seventh win with his new team, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
