I'm facing the possibility of quite the ordeal and I need to feel better about my choices, or lack thereof lol

never again.

1) i don't drive to work --- it's all train and shuttle, so i can actually sit and get work done for about half the journey.

2) i telecommute a couple days a week.

It actually wasn't so bad because I used to get a good 45 minute sleep on NJ Transit, and if I got a seat on the PATH I'd sleep on there, too.

Now it's exactly an hour, door to door.

One of my old bosses to used to commute to Jersey City from Princeton and it was 2 hours each way.

I was commuting from woodlawn to Germantown. About 50 min drive. Against traffic. And I would leave the house early as fuck and leave work around 230pm (before any traffic). I also took the back roads. I used to love that commute.

from Baltimore County to Bethesda MD. Only about 50 miles but traffic was HORRIBLE. I did that shit for about 8 months and couldn't take it anymore. The job was stressful enough, the commute just made it worse. Worst 8 months of my adulthood. HATED that damn place.

I'mma try to hold on for as long as I can (if I even get it) though. But shit ain't gon be peaches.

you are really gonna hate commuting and wish you lived there. Especially during the warm seasons.

Mofos would be hitting happy hour or taking the metro into DC and I would be taking that long ass drive back to Baltimore.

I'm definite trying to decrease that commute time with my next job but for now it's bearable. For me it's mostly a train ride so I can do stuff to occupy my time. If I was driving I'm sure I'd hate it

Now I can bike/bus/walk and drive 10 minutes to work. My quality of life has dramatically improved. I make breakfast for my daughter, clean up and even take a leisurely walk home on a nice evening.

My new rule is that I will not work more than 30 minutes from my home.

at the very least im gonna allude to the length of my commute (& my chagrin w/ it) and see if some concessions can be made. I know, I know...its a risk, but fuck it.

he's been doing that for about 12 years now. Taking the train. I don't know how he does it but it works for him.

My shortest commute was from Baltimore City to Sparks MD. About 30 mins. That shit was lovely. This was before kids and all, I would get to work mad early and leave around 330 and be home chilling before all the noisy neighborhood kids would finish their homework and be outside causing a ruckus. LOL.

I will say taking a train is different tho, cause you can chill.

One day traffic was so bad that it took three hours. That was hell.

Eventually I moved to Union City, which shaved maybe an hour off of it. Still sucked.

And I did it all in a car with a stick-shift. My left foot still hurts.

interviewed in santa clara a few years ago on a friggin friday afternoon before a holiday. took three hours to get home... ended up getting off in fremont for a drink to help simmer the frustration.

didn't get the gig and i wasn't even mad about it. and i was unemployed at the time.

Decatur to John's Creek. This put me on all the heavy hitters; !-285, I-85, and GA-400.

Did that for about 3-4 years, then as a reward I have been blessed with Avondale Estates to Clifton Road (4-5 miles) for the last 10 years.

20-30 mins tops to gotdamn 2 hrs

which y'all ATLiens know is ridiculous considering it's about 15 minutes no traffic. if I took 400, forget about it, or if I tried to take Roswell Rd until it turned to Main St, no dice. if I tried any of the side streets, Old Milton, Holcolm Bridge or North Point Pkwy, same thing.

it wasnt that bad either. But in Southern California most everything is going to be around that much of a drive. My wife though her commute is all over the place. She is a district operations manager in retail. Her home store is 8 miles from our door. So she usually works there on Monday and Friday. But she has 23 stores and they are all over the place. I think the worst one is in Hollywood. That could be anywhere from a 2 hour drive to 3 hours. The one good thing though is she gets paid mileage. She gets like $.58 a mile for every mile extra she does from her home store to another store. Every time she drives to Hollywood its about an extra $120 in expenses.

right now, my job is about 10 miles from the house and in the worse traffic, i can get leave home and be at my desk in 30 minutes. tops.

i'm leaving money on the table by not being willing to drive to DC but i can't do it. not even with the MARC train. cuz i still gotta park and take that train ride and then get to DC and transfer to the subway. i won't do it.

Staying with my dad while I apartment hunt in the district. I hate it. When I was in GA, I commuted from Lithonia to Buckhead - it was easily an hour each way due to traffic. Without it, I could be there in ~25 minutes.

Current commute I never leave the city or get on a highway, and can be at work in 20 minutes on the motorbike, 45 on the bus or train, and about 75 if I ride the bicycle in.

This morning, I pulled out the driveway at 740 and got to work at 930. Had to drop my daughter off and my son off (two different places) and drive to work.

Coming home, I usually leave around 415 and end up home by 6.

If I didn't have to do drop off/pick up, it would only take me 45 mins to an hour commuting straight highway with minimal traffic.

So I would drive up Monday morning 4am and get to work at 8am...stay there for a few days in the hotel (hotel was 5 min away from job) then drive home on Fridays (5pm-9pm) ...This was in the dead part of winter so driving through the mountains was rough (snowed all the time) but me and the Camry made it!

Did the job compensate you for those hotel costs? I have to imagine you lost out on the gas used for that drive since there's a limit to how much the job can compensate for your that mileage traveled.

Now it's about 25 minutes for maybe 1 and 1/2 days out of the week. We switched to working from home most of the week.

I split through traffic (where's it's not fully legal) here on these narrow streets and it's a big time saver.

the bikers out here DO split...but this is Cali.

nxggas be in traffic with half a blunt hangin out they mouth. I've seen too many dudes get clipped or have to rev they shxt hella loud to get the drivers attention. It's not frequent but it happens.

I'm partial to bikers, cause I would HATE to do that to somebody or have it done to me, but most the assholes aint that considerate. They merge at the very last minute and have the nerve to not wanna let nobody else in.

It definitely depends on what time I leave. If I get out before 615, it's about 45 minutes flat.

However, if I leave at 630 that time literally doubles. It's insane how that 15 minute difference can lead to a a 45 minute difference.

I can't wait til escrow closes this Tuesday. We're moving back next weekend and I'll have a 30 minute commute and that includes taking my daughter to school.

my current commute is my longest - 1 whole hour on the train. somedays I hate it and somedays I love the fact I can just zone out playing video games or whatever

I got a job offer at the Black newsrag in Philly and that shit was on the same block. I turned it down cause I moved out of state. I still wonder if I fucked up by not taking that gig.

It was right there on 16th and South and I was on 16th and South. Literally 15 steps away.

He drove back and forth, every weekday, for like five years. He was in grad school and his new wife couldn't move without leaving her job.

Google tells me this is about three hours, each way. I have a hard time fathoming it.

I do know a guy that live in Philly and works in DC, but he's older and wealthy-enough (.gov) to afford a condo in DC to stay during the week.

the commute is my least favorite part of working.. always try to position myself to work from home.. employers always get more out of me if they are conducive to it. commuting is a life and soul sucking affair that I abhor above almost all else.

To get home.

I had leave at 4:30 and walk around 2 miles to catch the bus by 5:30. I'd get off around 730 or so and walk another mile and a half (roughly) to get to work arou d 8:15, but work didn't start until 9.

Based in the time frames I had to catch the last bus around 7 and get back to town around 845, but it would end in middle of town instead of taking you all the way out for that last trip of the night and my walk home was just about double the walk to the bus stop in the morning.

I worked for a Direct TV company and my job was to schedule all their installations.

Because this process was a mess of rules using hand written spread sheets and paper sign up sheets and I had to send every installers assignments via fax and everything had to be verified and I was a salaried employee, I was often stuck in that city (Riverside) a few nights a week.

That was one hell of a grind at 21 for a salary of 320 a week.


Fortunately I worked with a close friend a nd was sometimes able to get a ride home and/or stay at her place if I couldn't get home.

Work started at 9, in a small town about 20 miles north of Philly. There was a 8am train that got me out there at 8:50, but the walk from the station took at least 20 minutes. They bosses were COMPLETELY inflexible, so I had to catch the 7am train and just get there early. It took about a half-hour to get to the train I needed from my apt, so I had to leave by 6:15am to make sure I didn't miss it. That meant waking up at 5am to get ready. Every morning was like a dark cloud hovering over me.

became an hour and 15 bus AND train commute and I thought that was brutal. I actually downtown to be within 15-20 minute walking distance.

My license is no longer suspended but I'm still a 15-20 minute walk from my current job. Somebody would have to offer me major money to even consider having to get up early for a daily hour+ commute. That's giving up too much of my life lol.
