In UVA they effectively didn't ask permission from what I know for the campus walk, but it doesn't make a difference. One that stuck out was I was lifting weights with this white dude, and in the weight room was another dude on the basketball team (black) and his Italian girlfriend (let's call her "Amanda"). So, basketball player and his girl leaves, and white dude turns to me and says:

"Man, Amanda sure does love the homeys"

He had that bitter tone to his voice too.
