they put a truck at the Shell on Manchester every day.

i'm legit surprised it's taken this long for black folks to get in on the taco hustle. Bill's Tacos used to be poppin back in the day, and now they only got one location, so there's been room to break in.

(shout out to the big homie and councilman Marqueece)
13183922, Marqueece dat dude...appreciating his visibility and accessibility

I haven't been in at least a decade.

just caught this yelp review:

got my order and sat down...salivating and everything. And then was like, "was is this?"
Kraft cheese slices? Huh?

I should have know better when I asked for Asada and the women looked at me funny. And said only beef. Ground beef. That was not ground beef. Maybe like a hamburger patty cut up. I don't know.

LMAOOOOO clearly this patron didn't know what it was.

chick I was with at the time took me; it reminded me of home (impoverished upbringing I guess).

I take iot from your response it aint gon be as nostalgic as I thought.

on an unrelated note...have you checked out bleukitchen?
13184405, it's hood food. Bill was probably high as hell when he came up with it
Posted by IkeMoses, Mon Aug-14-17 03:06 PM
i love it, though. them cheeseburger tacos ain't nothing to write about in Zagat, but they are a religious experience for the South Centralite. it's like our equivalent of the chopped cheese.
13184272, YOOOOO. Crazy as hell that me n my girl talked about this last night
Posted by -DJ R-Tistic-, Mon Aug-14-17 12:28 PM
We were in the Uber talking about tacos, and she asked if the spot I went to earlier had cheese. The Mexican driver said "cheese? On tacos???? That sounds amazing!!" and we laughed and said yea, we forget that authentic tacos don't have cheese. She asked if he fries the shells, and he said "fried shells? Why?" and she told him it's life changing.

I almost feel it's ignorant to say that Black people make better tacos than Mexicans...it's just that we have adapted them to fitting our taste buds.
13184285, Naw, there are different styles of tacos based on where they're from
Posted by JiggysMyDayJob, Mon Aug-14-17 12:48 PM
Mexicans make hard shell tacos they just have a slightly different name. Same with cheese, it's just instead of Cheddar which is purely an American thing, they use Queso Fresco and other Mexican style cheese.

Can't get crazy saying we make better tacos, they have turned that shit into an art. We barely scratch the surface.
13184339, ^^^
Posted by infin8, Mon Aug-14-17 01:50 PM
Sinaloa
Guadalajara
Jalisco
California
Texas

all tacos are not created equal...that cotijo goes HOARD
13184353, Ah interesting. I can see that

And nah, I would never say we actually make better tacos, but ours are just geared to our taste buds more.
13185013, calm down holmes. calmate.
Posted by astralblak, Tue Aug-15-17 09:12 PM
and frying shells shouldn't be a surprise to dude.

frying the tortilla on chicken or potato tacos is tradition
13184357, Other than ATL/lemon pepper wings, this was my favorite episode.
Posted by JFrost1117, Mon Aug-14-17 02:11 PM
There's a place here (Taco Pete's) that says they're an L.A. original. The shells were amazing, but the meat was straight gross. No one else does their shells like that, though.
13184488, But are these tacos any good tho?
Posted by Firecracker, Tue Aug-15-17 12:55 AM

One of my LA fav tacos are Ricky's Fish tacos

https://www.yelp.com/biz/rickys-fish-tacos-los-angeles-3
13185014, in Atwater?
Posted by astralblak, Tue Aug-15-17 09:13 PM
.
13184688, i saw this a while back and I dont know
Posted by RobOne4, Tue Aug-15-17 12:49 PM
I mean we get down on ground beef taco's too. They are fine once in a while. But I am not waiting in no line for a damn ground beef taco, or even worse ground turkey. The food seems pretty basic. Also it looks REALLY greasy. I would try it if I was in the area though.
13184691, It really doesn't look that good at all lol
Posted by Firecracker, Tue Aug-15-17 12:51 PM

I know there are some amazing black owned carts around its just this whole Foodminati (?) gang seem to have pretty basic tacos, I agree. Ground beef, greasy ass tacos

13184802, you know?
Posted by SoWhat, Tue Aug-15-17 02:39 PM
i'm not all that jazzed about hot sauce and ketchup on a taco.

13184806, KETCHUP ON A TACO THO
Posted by Firecracker, Tue Aug-15-17 02:40 PM
13184936, ground beef, cheese, lettuce, tomato, ketchup
Posted by sectachrome86, Tue Aug-15-17 05:10 PM
that's a cheeseburger, not a taco
13184836, It is basic and it's not worth super long waits.
Posted by IkeMoses, Tue Aug-15-17 03:14 PM
It's niggas making gringo tacos, nothing more, nothing less.

This is for folks who get down with Tito's Tacos and shit.

They ain't trying to replace the trucks that be choppin pastor off the spit or nothing.
13184842, how far can your business go doing that?
Posted by RobOne4, Tue Aug-15-17 03:20 PM
I mean you can make some good gringo tacos. My wife makes some and I will fuck up 2 or 6. It look like they found their niche. Everyone in the video talks about they just wanted to make tacos like they had at home. Which is cool. But they might just get stuck in their neighborhoods selling to the locals. That last one Taco Mell looked like he was varying up the meat. Looked like he actually had some carne asada on the flat top. But they gotta try and do something different if they want to continue and grow. Once they are no longer cool and new what is going to bring people back?
13184849, i mean, this is some grassroots shit
Posted by IkeMoses, Tue Aug-15-17 03:30 PM
i can't speak on their ambitions, but having trucks and stands and catering in the hood is viable business. it don't have to expand beyond that to make bank.
13184763, .

13184795, I was supposed to go to AFNG last time I was in LA
Posted by Hitokiri, Tue Aug-15-17 02:34 PM
But the days he was up and running were days I was out doing stuff and the days I was in and around south LA he wasn't open.
