This is one of the most underrated and overlooked films of all-time.

And poor CJ just didn't understand. He was oblivious in a good and innocent way. A pure-hearted dude. He just didn't understand the ways of the wild that existed outside of whatever farm or town he was from.

I mean... We laughed at Gator but all of us had a Gator in the family who we could now see as a human again as opposed to the drugged out motherfucker who made your granny cry.

He dealt with colorism as well as the self-esteem issues women of color deal with as a result of their hue.

13182328, Both, but especially the fourth wall.
Posted by stravinskian, Tue Aug-08-17 01:43 PM
He'd been butting up against the 4th wall throughout the entire movie by being both a character and a narrator. But the character and the narrator get closer and closer together throughout the course of the movie without us overtly noticing it.

Then in that moment we're hit with the fact that this is a story, that the story is over, and that it's HIS story, the guy who's been talking to us for the past two and a half hours, which ironically makes it feel more real. It immediately invites us to question the details and to believe the whole.

it hits all the major aspects out of the park in my opinion.

Characters, plot, setting, score, dialogue, comedy...but the real star of the movie is its pacing. Reminiscent of Seinfeld with its quickness.

I'm no movie buff but that's my opinion on it. lol

Posted by Nodima, Wed Aug-09-17 01:52 PM
it's not as egregious as all the problems I see in Knight Rises, but I definitely saw a lot of similar symptoms. Kinda made me sad 'cause I'd seen that movie a lot prior to DKR and always loved it and I think DKR kinda ruined DK for me.

Still love the initial bank heist a lot, and thought about mentioning it in this thread, but even that one had me like, "but why isn't anyone noticing this bus pulling out of the wall of a bank, including those cops showing up three seconds afterward?"

bummer, lol.

13182734, the part in that scene where they're standing at the door
Posted by Garhart Poppwell, Wed Aug-09-17 11:55 AM
and he asks his uncle "You're not going to let them do anything to me, right?" and his uncle looks at him and says "No, I'm not going to let them do anything to you" with this look of sadness (and shock, hearing a fully grown man asking him if he will allow a bunch of old people to hurt him or not, like he can't defend himself) really got me. They both sold that moment before the door opened up. That movie had some really great acting in it, now that I think about it.
13183428, This always got to me too.

It's a small moment but poignant.

That scene was legendary as well...but the diner scene looked like it was shot in one take. Just two actors exchanging dialouge ...great stuff!

But yea. that shootout was the truth
