13176519, What happens when Trump issues a pardon for himself? Posted by handle, Wed Dec-31-69 07:00 PM
Choice 7: Hillary's Emails and, uh, Bengazi!!
I believe it will be "Republicans hold inconsequential hearings."
Republicans are traitors.
Poll question: What happens when Trump issues a pardon for himself?
Poll result (9 votes) | Nothing | (7 votes) | Vote | Republicans hold inconsequential hearings | (1 votes) | Vote | Republicans actively rebel against Trump | (1 votes) | Vote | Republicans hold hearings that lead to articles of impeachment | (0 votes) | Vote | Trump is impeached but not removed office | (0 votes) | Vote | Trump is impeach and removed from office | (0 votes) | Vote |

13176522, Fake hearings sounds about right Posted by Mynoriti, Fri Jul-21-17 02:41 PM
they specialize in those symbolic nothingburgers
like repealing obamacare over and over when it didn't matter

13176527, i don't think they'd even hold hearings. Posted by HotThyng76, Fri Jul-21-17 02:46 PM
Ryan and McConnell would get on TV and say there's nothing illegal or unconstitutional about a self-pardon.
maybe some committee would make noise. which one? for real, i don't know.
these wimps have turned a blind eye to everything he's done so far. i see them doing it again.

Like with comey.
Repubs will pretend to grill him while protecting him and making it about leaks or Hillary or a retracted story in the NY times

13176524, at best a SCOTUS review. Posted by HotThyng76, Fri Jul-21-17 02:44 PM
but...since the Constitution doesn't prohibit self-pardoning i don't see much happening.
most POTUSes wouldn't dare b/c they'd face a political reprisal. like an impeachment from a hostile Congress or losing a reelection bid. or hurting the rest of the party's down-ballot candidates. none of that shit applies to Trump or it doesn't bother him. he has violated so many political norms and gotten away w/it so far that it's like...'fuck it!'
but i think he CAN self-pardon and i'm not convinced anything will happen to him if he does. it definitely CAN but that doesn't mean it will. _______________________

13176526, nothing. same as the rest of the trump wave so far. Posted by BrooklynWHAT, Fri Jul-21-17 02:45 PM

13176532, I think RICO laws can still be applied on a state level. Posted by MEAT, Fri Jul-21-17 03:17 PM
And they seem very likely and applicable for their issues in NY

13176535, Assume the investigation takes another 14 months Posted by Kira, Fri Jul-21-17 03:25 PM
If Mueller is smart he'll wait until midterms to release the findings from the investigation. Tie Trump into Russia and force Republicans to come out against Trump or lose seats. If the Republican party toes the line then they lose enough seats for Dems to gain them. This in turn forces impeachment in time for the pardons to take place.

13176566, Trump would have to pull off his mask and reveal he's Obama Posted by IkeMoses, Fri Jul-21-17 09:42 PM
for anything to happen to him at this point.

13177037, Even then, the studio audience would just gasp and applaud. Posted by squeeg, Mon Jul-24-17 02:24 PM

13176567, Legally it makes no immediate difference, as far as I've heard. Posted by stravinskian, Fri Jul-21-17 09:55 PM
Mueller would still be empowered to continue his investigation. A pardon wouldn't become relevant until they try to indict. At that point, the WH could refuse to appear in court, citing the pardon. Then Mueller personally has standing to sue again in federal court, and that case would quickly rise to be decided by the Supreme Court.
So in the end, yeah, nothing.

13177026, After a pardon the 5th amendment will not apply anymore Posted by Cam, Mon Jul-24-17 02:04 PM
So, I imagine they'd trot him/them out for ongoing inquiries, to find out honest details...for years.
