13167938, So what the hell do I do with this Google Home?
Posted by WarriorPoet415, Thu Jun-22-17 12:01 PM
So bought some new appliances over the Memorial Day sales period.

Best Buy was giving away Google Homes with purchases over a certain amount.

But I see you can't really get the full benefit of it if you don't have a chromecast connect to your television, or if you don't have google play music.

It's kind of dope, but I wish it was Alexa since I'm an Amazon Prime member. If I had chromecast and all Android devices, it seems like it would be hot shit.

Right now all I do with it is ask asinine questions from time to time.

Nah, I don't agree with that. Not at all. You basically now have a google that can talk back to you.

Alexa is better...but I would not shy away from a free Google Home at all lol....

Posted by Buddy_Gilapagos, Thu Jun-22-17 01:23 PM
Like I know why Amazon went the route it did, because they couldn't get a phone in peoples hands. Of course they would eventually need a screen.

But I never quite understood why Google and Apple went the same route as Alexa.

All they really needed was a docking station with a mic that hooked up to your stereo. Don't really need the docking station but I feel like Google Assistant always listening would drain the shit out my phone.

It's my alarm in the morning.

When I wake up I say good morning and it gives me a run down of appointments and todays news and weather.

Then I ask it to play spotify, pandora or google music for me. If I want it louder I tell it to cast the music to my sony sound bar.

Then I ask it all sorts of random questions that I would otherwise google search. This morning I asked it what time the 99 cent store around the corner opens.

Then I bought a harmony hub. Now I can use it to control my TV. Drives the boys crazy when I say, Hey Google turn off the TV.

I use it a lot more than I thought I would.

What I mean is, I have a TH. The Google Home is in my living room. It wouldn't be able to be my alarm clock, I'd have to go downstairs to ask it anything. Plus I guess I just don't have the devices that it can connect with. Plus I find it useless that it can't even work as a bluetooth speaker or make calls.

In my place in BK it's in the living room. I either go in the living room to turn it off or yell at it to turn off from my bed.

It works as a speaker for my phone but it doesn't use bluetooth. It uses wifi and the chromecasting tech.

At this point with phone, tv and speaker bar, I am deep in the android ecosystem.

yes, they probably store your "browsing" history and query's , but they aren't recording devices.
They listen and process commands & queries only after being triggered.

Those things are recording. They are microphones connected to I dunno what. What/whomever is on the other end can listen. How else do you think the thing responds to a voice prompt? It's always listening - it responds when it hears a preprogrammed word. It's always on. Always listening. Recording.
13168291, Do you realize how much storage space and bandwidth would
Posted by FLUIDJ, Fri Jun-23-17 10:58 AM
be required to store a single household's worth of sound 24hrs/day 365 days/year?
Let alone how useless it'd be for any company selling those products to actively do so??

Always listening =/= recording.

13168297, So you didn't read the article, I take it?
Posted by SoWhat, Fri Jun-23-17 11:02 AM
K.

In Arkansas, prosecutors subpoenaed RECORDINGS made by Alexa in a murder case. Amazon gave them the recording. ACLU and other similar orgs are concerned about the ramifications of these cases bc the law isn't clear yet. But what is clear - Amazon will give up the recordings made by Alexa. Which means - Alexa makes recordings.

Good luck, player.

*note: I don't know any criminal defense lawyer or civil rights lawyer who has a recording device thing (aka 'home assistant') installed. Lol
13168303, Yes, I read that article back when it came out, and once again
Posted by FLUIDJ, Fri Jun-23-17 11:17 AM
just now when you linked it.

There's technical capability, and then there's what a company would feasibly do and want to do. As I already stated, they listen and action query's upon hearing the trigger word. Those are stored indeed, just like you browser history, listening history on your favorite streaming service, etc....

People insinuate that these devices are actively listening and recording and storing everything you speak in your home and i'm saying not only is that not true, it's not feasibly possible on the large scale that'd be required to maintain it.

Also this blurb in the article alludes to that fact:

"......... Google only stores voice-based queries received immediately after recognizing the hotwords ‘OK Google’ or ‘Hey Google.’ After Google Home hears the hotword, its LEDs light up to indicate that it is listening. Hotword detection runs locally on the Google Home device and if the hotword is not detected, the audio snippet stays local on the device and is immediately discarded. If the hotword is recognized, the data, including the query contents, are sent to Google servers for analyzing and storage in My Activity."

Of course, it's all about the clicks so this article doesn't bother to explore the technical side of this any deeper, they just real you in with the clickbait and hysteria .....

WIth that said....YES I DO believe that these devices COULD be used to frame and set somebody up if some high level agency decided to.....
But I don't for a second believe that these devices are being used in that capacity en mass....

"Get ready....for your blessing....."

they obtained from those snippets gave them anything of substance.

"Get ready....for your blessing....."
13168310, I don't believe what Google says about the device.
Posted by SoWhat, Fri Jun-23-17 11:28 AM
Bc we know it sometimes hears the trigger word when no one has said it. Which means it might turn on and record when it's not 'supposed to'. Also, I did a risk/benefit analysis and decided I can get up and control my light switches myself. I can turn on music by hand. The devices offer nothing worth the risk.
13168315, I mean, I can't argue with that, it's def. a personal choice.
Posted by FLUIDJ, Fri Jun-23-17 11:39 AM
>Bc we know it sometimes years the trigger word when no one
>has said it. Which means it might turn on and record when it's
>not 'supposed to'.

That's just it though, what it stores is not audio, it stores a search query. And even it did store audio, it only stores the split seconds prior to the trigger word and the length of time after the trigger word to process the query.

Also, I did a risk/benefit analysis and
>decided I can get up and control my light switches myself. I
>can turn on music by hand. The devices offer nothing worth the
>risk.

ultimately i'd be more worried about the stuff i'm typing online and browsing on my computer. But I can't knock your stance on it.

Anyway, the main problem with the thing is the potential privacy waiver. I don't want to give up my reasonable expectation of privacy and I don't want to trust a tech company to assert my rights and protect my privacy in court. Not when I can get my ass up and turn my lights on myself.

THIS part I can ride with you on though. It's kinda foul to include a privacy waiver. They could at least be hyper specific about exactly what/how/when they are storing on their servers that they are fine with releasing to authorities. And then allow you to opt out at the expense of a degraded user experience or something....

but for me?? I'll just watch what I say around my technology lol.

Cooking: "Alexa, set timer for 15min"

just the tip of the iceberg...

it's amazing the amount of mundane stuff we do with our cell phones that can now easily be executed by just talking. Multi-tasking in the kitchen and house in general is just so much easier and doable now.

If the kid wants to hear some cheesy kid music, I don't have to unlock my phone, set it to Kids Mode, walk her through queing up appropriate music, searching for music etc.... SHE can just ask Alexa to play it and it happens instantly. If she don't like it (or I don't like it) just tell Alexa to skip it....
