13155091, Best filler cuts on albums
Posted by legsdiamond, Thu May-11-17 10:14 AM
Always thought that was a fucked up name for songs on an album that prolly were the artist favorite but somehow got labeled a filler cut because it wasn't a hit.

Go head and throw up some dope songs that most people don't remember from good albums.

13155097, Love Come Thru - Soul II Soul
Posted by legsdiamond, Thu May-11-17 10:22 AM
Man, the drums on this were ridiculous. I used to love this cut but it was all about However Do You Want It back when they dropped.

I searched a good 5 years for this before realizing it was on that Soul II Soul album.

13155099, Sincerety - Lisa Standfield
Posted by legsdiamond, Thu May-11-17 10:27 AM
they played this at my cousins wedding and I looked at the DJ and we gave each other the "yeah, people don't slept on this cut" nod.

Almost has the same beat as Been Around the Wolrd but this joint was better IMO. The "Cmon" adlibs did it for me.

13155127, Baby Be Mine - MJ (Thriller)
Posted by Brew, Thu May-11-17 11:13 AM
The much maligned Baby Be Mine. An amazing song IMO, one of my personal favorites from MJ in fact.
13155136, I've always wanted Vol 1. era Jay Z to rock that intro
Posted by Cold Truth, Thu May-11-17 11:29 AM
Put that Jay over a loop of the first 19 seconds of that beat?

Butter.
13155279, That's an interesting idea. My buddy always said ...
Posted by Brew, Thu May-11-17 03:01 PM
... that "Baby Be Mine" has a ton of great hip-hop-ish elements and it sounds like you'd agree.
13155137, people don't like that song?

13155181, nvm

13155280, On OKP specifically, yea lots of people have hated on it.

Saying it doesn't fit the album, dud of the album, belongs on Off the Wall, shit like that. Never understood it really.

but now it's kind of an album track for her - albeit a very strong one.

Close call for "filler", I know.
13155247, I think any song that isn't released as a single is a filler cut

not my definition but I think that the universal definition.

and I think plenty of artist are "known" for songs that aren't the best one's on the album.

13155229, the tension in this post is to "perceive" how much "emphasis" or not
Posted by c71, Thu May-11-17 01:41 PM
was put on the song if it obviously was not selected to be a single.

Was it "under the radar" or not on the album"?

A really fine line because some songs even though they weren't singles obviously are "propping up" the entire album due to their quality and because you can "tell" the artist put a lot of "effort" into that particular song (even if it wasn't chosen to be a single).
13155260, I ALWAYS laugh when the chorus hits.

I'm not sure if it qualifies as filler, but it's definitely a track that doesn't get talked about much. It's sequenced at the end of the album between Bag lady and Green Eyes so it feels like a song that gets you from here to there on the album and not necessarily a stand-alone joint to listen to. But it ABSOLUTELY should be - the vamp on that song takes me to another place...

13155413, There's a stark difference between 'filler' and an album cut y'all
Posted by ramaj1, Fri May-12-17 02:53 AM
Filler=a song that's just there to fill out a track listing

Album cut=a full fledged song that has not been released as a single
13155414, Well if it's that serious...
Posted by Boogie Stimuli, Fri May-12-17 04:14 AM
>Filler=a song that's just there to fill out a track listing
>
>Album cut=a full fledged song that has not been released as a
>single

That doesn't seem stark at all.

What if a "full fledged" song is there to fill
out a track listing?
It seems that this is just determined by personal
taste what one deems as single material.

How would you determine the difference on Kendrick's
"DAMN." between filler and album cut?

13155778, Like I said in reply #40, there is tension in this post because
Posted by c71, Fri May-12-17 03:03 PM
some album cuts are so strong that you can't "really" call them "filler" (I probably shouldn't have chosen "fingertips" by Poe as "filler"), yet obviously it is fun to us to try to "split hairs" on whether some tracks were just an artist "messing around" and coming up with something "better than 'decent'" or the artist really put some "effort" into the track and therefore...it really ain't "filler."

Plus the post is complicated from the start by requesting the "best" "filler" cuts, so some of us (like I did a couple of times) are going to pick songs that "cross the line" from the "best filler" cuts to "strong" album cuts.

It is fun because some say creativity really "works" when the artist really isn't "trying" ("forcing"/"straining" - like artists are known to do so often) so this post let's us "explore" when we perceive artists not "forcing" and coming up with something good.

See: "time's a wastin'", "spaced cowboy", etc.
13156050, that's pretty subjective as shit.

"She was on that tip about stoppin' the violence
About my people she was teachin' me..."
13156008, Good one. I repeated that song so many times.

I liked the original better than the dressed up version that ended up on the album, slightly, but man ... both are magical. Gives me chills just thinking about that song. That song and "Hey Mama" are early Kanye songs that just speak to me.
