A different 'shared fiction' (Nice terminology) would fill the vacuum and I can think of a lot worse ones than Religion. Like you said...nationalism, racial tribalism etc.

There's a part of me that subscribes to a utopia like John Lennon's 'Imagine' because I'm an atheist. But the cynic in me thinks we would need to physically evolve for that to work. Our brains would have to change.
