RE: To Pimp a Butterfly came out two years ago.
>FUCK.

I wonder how many of us, who considered it to be great/epic/timeless/legendary/classic material, are still listening.

13135244, I'm still listening.
Posted by Innocent Criminal, Wed Mar-15-17 02:49 PM
13135248, no, but it might be time to revisit
Posted by legsdiamond, Wed Mar-15-17 02:56 PM
I had to give it a rest.

13135250, Of course. Still sounds just as good.

13135264, Should've added this to my response up there...

I definitely still rock it from time to time.

When I start listening to it though, I can't stop. It ends up being on steady repeat for days at a time. Then, I have to force myself to stop. It's truly one of the only albums, of all the great stuff we've gotten in the last few years, that grabs me that way.

13135278, that whole album got me through days 1, 2 and 3 of Trump.

It amps me up.

And best of wishes, man. Hope that it's what you want and that it works out the way you want it to.
13135445, thanks. it's not what I want but it's almost 20K more than my salary

help support you while you chase what you really want. I'm hopeful that it works out for you. It always does!
13135464, sometimes?

13135505, i think there can be situations where you leave the money on the table
Posted by KiloMcG, Thu Mar-16-17 10:53 AM
especially if the job is going to fuck with your work/life balance, home life, peace of mind, stress/anxiety level etc.

in other words, money aint everything, but it can certainly help make those other things i mentioned easier to deal with.

13135534, Yeah, what Kilo said.

13135290, yep...still listen, but not straight through...

13135293, yep, but

its a good album, but I'm not sure its a classic.

I like school boys album better.
13135297, Definitely grew on me over time

I still place it 3rd behind gkmc and Section.80, but while I at first thought this album was a bit too all over the place and sacrificing an enjoyable listening experience with experimentalism and trying to do too much, in recent listens I've come to really appreciate what Kendrick was going for and able to achieve. I still think it's going to be several more years before it's fully realized and appreciated by some of the people who weren't too big on it upon release.

Cheers to Kendrick though. He's 3 for 3 as far as my ears are concerned and I can't wait for his next project.
13135340, still listening

one of my favorite rap albums ever period
13135373, Nope I was done with it the day it leaked.
Posted by BrooklynWHAT, Thu Mar-16-17 12:44 AM
Should've kept it in the safe and built the album around untitled unmastered
13135447, thanks for letting me know I cant trust your tastes

13135300, Why does this anger you?

13135303, its sadness. its the realization that time fucking flies.

13135315, yep.
Posted by Stringer Bell, Wed Mar-15-17 05:03 PM
The only thing that slightly mitigates this feeling is the period since Trump won has gone more slowly. I heard somebody say they feel like they're aging a month per week ever since the inauguration and that feels about right.
13135313, Still in rotation but damn....2 years already?!?
Posted by Seven, Wed Mar-15-17 04:51 PM
....that album and Black Messiah took me through a rough patch in early 2015
13135334, My favorite song is Momma now

That beat man
13135337, my favorite song on this album always seems to rotate
Posted by Playa_Politician, Wed Mar-15-17 07:58 PM
it's always a different one that i listen to and feel like i didn't pay enough attention to. Momma is definitely up there.

>That beat man

Sometimes I just listen to the intro before the rapping starts over and over. And then I'm finally ready to take it in all over again.

This feeling is unmatched...

I spent a decent amount of time 'explaining' this album to my mama. Of course, gkmc was an easy sell as was his stuff before it.

Tpab didn't work on her immediately. Gkmc gave her wild expectations...

My uncle/her brother had just gotten killed when tpab came out. And my moms wasn't doing great about it. I was and still am at least slightly fucked off over it too.

But. I matter what's going on, I always try to lace her with the best of the best music. I mean shit, it's my mama, my dog, my friend. She's great and she deserves the good feelings that good music can bring you.

Sometimes I get her and other times...not so much. Ie: she loves Outkast but only kinda 'appeases me' about Van Hunt. She's in the middle on Bilal and D'Angelo. She's down with Maxwell when he shows up. And Jill is her girl forever. She feels like she 'owes' it to me that she knows about any of this. I put her onto the full Marvin Gaye discography and blew her mind.

But tpab... she wasn't 'getting it'. That's what she said anyway. I understood but I was almost mad at her cuz she was trying too hard but not hard enough at the same time. But I wanted her to hear what I was hearing so I kept picking away at her about it. Off and on of course but I wasn't giving up on her.

The poem throughout was the roadmap. I sold her on that first. I got her in on the dark hilarity of For Sale. But momma is what got my mama...

Momma is the song I leaned on the hardest to sell her on the album as a whole. Every verse. Every lyric. Every everything about it. It's the song that most clearly explained to me what Kendrick was up against after gkmc hit like it did. To me, it's the centerpiece of the album even tho alright is the anthem.

And it hit me like a Jadakiss refrigerator.

It's my favorite song on the whole thing in a walk. The 2nd verse is my favorite in a loooooong time. And once I got her to 'hear' that, she was in too.

So of course I think of all of that and more when I hear this song. Good music has a power to it. I swear it does.

13135450, and its still FAR better than anything thats come out since

like, its not even close.

13135513, man, I have yet to listen to this album...
Posted by Dstl1, Thu Mar-16-17 11:10 AM
despite the fact that I threw it on my phone the day it came out and I have several real-life people imploring me to listen.
13135529, Well, there's no time like the present.
