but the subject(s) aren't very exciting in their posture or pose. The protest sign is also rather bland. I think that takes away from the overall composition.

my eyes first hit the two people then moved up to the sign (which is weird but anyways).
I think I'd prefer landscape which would provide some additional space around the subjects and make the sign 'smaller' in the photo.

About the photo: It doesn't draw the eye to any particular place, other than maybe that weird cat sign. I'm more confused by this photo than anything else. Also, colour would've been nice.

they seem to always get lost in the environment either by way of lighting or framing
this would be a not bad picture if you shot them from center with your focal plane parallel to the subjects instead of taking them on from a angle.
