Staffers are afraid to be straight with him about the poll numbers. Supposedly he's sleeping even less than usual, and requiring staffers to stay up with him and talk to him in soothing voices to keep him calm.
I heard a report to this effect last night, but I'm too lazy to track it down now.
But if any of that if true, it paints a picture of a man who might just collapse. And I hesitate to even say what I mean by that.
