13089786, what was the last album you had to work for?
Posted by double negative, Thu Nov-03-16 09:32 AM
by "work for" i mean it took a few listens for it to click or to "Get it". Or maybe it was an album you hated at first but then came to understand it after repeat exposure.

The first time I heard Madvillainly I didnt get it but I knew I should keep listening, after about the 4th or 5th listen Dooms complex lyrics and story telling started to make a lot of sense and its easily in my top X albums of all time list in my head.

13089792, Undun...and I still don't love it...
Posted by Dstl1, Thu Nov-03-16 09:41 AM
but I can rock to it. On first listen, I hated everything with the exception of "Kool On"
13089815, 'Lighthouse' is my favorite song from that album
Posted by Dr Claw, Thu Nov-03-16 10:11 AM
weird hearing Dice Raw in that role though
13089827, ATYSYC for me
Posted by makaveli, Thu Nov-03-16 10:25 AM
still in the lower echelon of roots albums for me but I like it for what it is.
13089844, great example

13089814, Solange

13089952, yup...i only liked one song at first now i love the whole thing

13089825, Great question
Posted by legsdiamond, Thu Nov-03-16 10:22 AM
I can't remember tho because I stopped working for albums, stand up comedy, movies, etc... years ago.

But since I got this iPhone I been listening to all my old iTunes on shuffle and there are random songs from rock groups like Grizzly Bear that I copped and never got into. It sounds good now but back then I couldn't do it.

I think streaming and technology messed up my album enjoyment. I skip if I don't feel it.

Edit: I'm listening to Bibel Gilberto's album Momento as I type this.
13089826, blankface most recently
Posted by tariqhu, Thu Nov-03-16 10:24 AM
didn't like it on the first couple listens. then it hit itm

same with and then you shoot your cousin.
13089831, it's too much entertainment out here to work for it
Posted by BrooklynWHAT, Thu Nov-03-16 10:32 AM
i have a 2 listen rule for albums and a 3 episode rule for TV. if i don't love it or at least think it's interesting it's on to the next.
13089836, Maxwell & D'Angelo
Posted by FLUIDJ, Thu Nov-03-16 10:35 AM
D'Angelo literally......wit his mumbling ass.....

Maxwell sounded real lightweight to me and rushed and sub par.... it took several listens and learning the lyrics to really appreciate the depth it had to offer.

"Get ready....for your blessing....."
13089847, actually, yes, Black Messiah took some work to get through
Posted by double negative, Thu Nov-03-16 10:49 AM
but its worth it

strangely it kind of has low replay value but everytime its playing I always think "Why am I not playing this more?"
13089852, I play "Another Life" a couple times in a row, then I'm done til next time
Posted by Dstl1, Thu Nov-03-16 10:52 AM
.
13089853, Damn... I forgot about the D album
Posted by legsdiamond, Thu Nov-03-16 10:53 AM
I tried to play it at Xmas a few years back and my family was like "please turn that off"

..and these are older sisters who are huge prince fans. They weren't feeling it and honestly, I never sat through that whole album.
13089905, it sounds like crap.
Posted by tariqhu, Thu Nov-03-16 12:10 PM
he's mumbling over muddy tracks. nah, I'll pass.
13089918, Still working on the newest Maxwell jawn...
Posted by Creole, Thu Nov-03-16 12:43 PM
I've not yet sat with it and gave it the attention I should to truly appreciate it.

As for D's latest, I just let that rock without paying too much attention to the singing. His mumbling voice is more of an accompanying instrument than it is something to stand alone. In fact, I treat it the same as I did Voodoo which is one of my favorite albums ever. The difference is that I sat with Voodoo, upon its release, and read/sang the lyrics while vibing to the music. Haven't done that with Black Messiah.
13089848, kanye last 2 albums
Posted by Cenario, Thu Nov-03-16 10:49 AM
13089870, I bet his next album is going to be some techno noise art soundscape
Posted by double negative, Thu Nov-03-16 11:10 AM

13090129, thats a kinda...after the third walk through it came together
Posted by double negative, Thu Nov-03-16 04:36 PM
but it has super low replay value

once you get the jokes

maybe if it came out without being tainted by the circus (i.e 'finger in the....") then it might be different
13090309, Love at first listen. Should include All I Got
Posted by Mori, Fri Nov-04-16 11:22 AM
He should have put All I got with Chance the Rapper after Ultra Lightbeam or Father stretch out my hands.

Overall I play wolves daily.

This album's only weaknesses are the lyrics which are just to crass fro my taste.
13089893, I LIKED Rising Down
Posted by Nodima, Thu Nov-03-16 11:56 AM
but it took me eight years to realize that the greatness of its first seven songs, the damn near perfection of them, is more than enough to overcome some lame/annoying bookend skits and a somewhat less interesting but still very enjoyable last couple songs. I blame the optimism of that time (a month before Obama would win the election) for me not clicking with that album. It feels much differently to me now as a 28 year old and after the year we've had.
13089907, This reminds me..I still dont "Get" FKA Twigs...
Posted by double negative, Thu Nov-03-16 12:14 PM
I've tried so many times but I end up falling asleep and having to rush to work because I just don't normally get to sleep that deeply
13089914, Kendrick "Section 80." DJing actually made me a bad listener for a few
Posted by -DJ R-Tistic-, Thu Nov-03-16 12:37 PM
years. I would listen to hyped up albums and just skim through them, looking for the hit tracks that I could play at the club. So of course, Kendrick failed that test.

Then, I decided to listen start to finish, and said OHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH.
13089927, I feel like this happens ALL the time because of all the music in consume
Posted by BigReg, Thu Nov-03-16 12:54 PM
So if something doesnt click, I go to the next. Here's some from 2016 alone:

KA's Night's Gambit. Sat with it for awhile, even saw him live touring it a couple of years ago! lol. I read about him selling his latest record outside of a now closed popular record store and decided to give it another try, blown away. I like modern hip-hop, but ain't many cats working on creating mood and atmosphere like KA.

Electric Wizard. Critically acclaimed metal album from 2000 that i actually had and got rid of twice before, lol. Read a poll this year comparing it to other records at the time, gave it another re-listen, and now it's one of my fav records.

13089937, Funeropolis is still a jam. How dare you?
Posted by double negative, Thu Nov-03-16 01:06 PM
13089943, The Love Below

13089956, Organized Konfusion - The Equinox
Posted by PoppaGeorge, Thu Nov-03-16 01:26 PM
It took YEARS to really get into this album. It just didn't grab me like "Extinction Agenda" or their self titled debut. Nothing really jumped out at me on that first listen, so I put it up and kept revisiting it over the next couple of years. One day in late '99 I was sittin off in my apartment with a bottle of rum and a plate of fried pork chops and fries and decided to throw it in for no real reason. It finally clicked and I've been diggin it ever since.

They don't want to call for peace then.
13090294, I Love That Album
Posted by Dj Joey Joe, Fri Nov-04-16 10:57 AM
The only thing that stops that album from being really dope is some of the narrative skits especially the long one at the end "Epilogue" cause it took me two year to listen thru that bullshit to realize it was a bonus track at the end "United As One".

I got the idea of it right away, I really like the "March 21 3:45 a.m" skit.

13090494, this was the one with the end of the worl kinda vibes right?
Posted by 2Future4U, Fri Nov-04-16 05:10 PM
I remember the single from it with the Snoop Dogg lyrics from Gin N Juice being vastly different vibe wise from the rest of the album..strangely enough i liked this album
13089999, barter 6
Posted by bearfield, Thu Nov-03-16 01:54 PM
it didn't hit me until i saw the video for "with that." that video did a good job of expressing the psychedelic and improvisational nature of the music. after i saw that video the whole album clicked. now it's one of my favorite releases of the decade
13090111, Loop Finding Jazz Records by Jan Jelinek
Posted by dustin, Thu Nov-03-16 03:59 PM
I think I first read about it on here. I might even say that it's not this album specifically but whatever genre this is placed in as a whole. Someone made a post and it got 10+ replies all kinda gushing over this so I had to hear it myself.

I was like uh... this some ambient shit? Uh..where are the tunes at...

Took maybe a year or so but now, 4-5+ years later, this is one of my favorites. It just works. The songs are fun to listen to attentively, but also good for just background noise
13090300, thanks to you that album is a current favorite this week

13090123, Solange "A Seat At The Table"

13090307, Thundercat's Albums

First couple of listens and I was unimpressed. Threw "Golden Age of Apocalypse" on during a long bike ride and I was hooked after that.

I like the music right off, but the lyrics too me a while to get. "Prince Johnny" is my favorite track and I'm still not sure I get it.
13090492, still working on De La's latest
Posted by 2Future4U, Fri Nov-04-16 05:07 PM
