Vox had the perfect title for their review of it

"The first season of HBO comedy Insecure is a painfully real look at what it means to be selfish" along with this sentence:

"Insecure walks the incredibly thin line between portraying people doing selfish things and portraying them as irredeemably selfish people."

Lawrence being a slacker/aimless/depressed was his issue; obviously it affected Issa but he wasn't doing it out of selfishness. And he fucked up bad by basically doing nothing on her birthday.

But immediately from that point on he was on a path of trying to save their relationship and do better for him and for her.

Issa? She literally aint come home for 3 days, fucked some side dude, etc.
