13085721, I'm torn RE: The Black Women Dating Woes theme Posted by caramelapplebttms, Mon Oct-24-16 02:58 PM
I've never lived in Cali, but I had a friend who told me she left the Bay for the Midwest in part because Black men in Cali were only interested in "exotic", non-Black-looking women.
So I get that this is a thing.
But something about having Black women's undesirability as a pervasive theme in now three episodes is rubbing me the wrong way, especially since it's on HBO and not on a "for us" platform like BET. Even Being Mary Jane only touched on this in a couple of episodes (out of five seasons) with a resolution. Also, Mary Jane Paul is consistently portrayed as very desirable to men, even more so than her light-skinned best friend.
At this rate, this show may actually hurt our stock as Black women. I cringe watching it and I'm suppose to be the target demographic.
I'm rooting for Issa though.
