I think part of it is people don't want to even bother to state their preference because it will be too much of a hassle defending them. They know who they're voting for.. it's just easier to say they're both equally horrible and go on with your day.

I think there's a silent majority/bradley effect-ish dynamic that could be at play for both of them. You saw it somewhat in the Dem primaries. Not so much in polling, but certainly in conversations, and event turnouts. I still can't go a block in So Cal without seeing a Bernie bumper sticker, and I can still go a month between seeing a Hillary one, but Bern got trounced here. And i do think more people like the outsider/strong man/simple solution to complex problems thing Trump is offering than they really let on. Simply because most people are too busy and lazy to really pay attention.
