13032916, TEXAS Lt. Governor Dan Patrick- You Reap what you Sow ..0_0

http://www.chron.com/news/article/Texas-Lt-Governor-Dan-Patrick-tweets-reap-what-8076147.php?cmpid=twitter-mobile

Hours after approximately 50 people were killed at a Florida LGBT nightclub in what federal officials are investigating as an act of terrorism, the lieutenant governor of Texas is receiving backlash for tweeting a verse from the Bible.

At precisely 7 a.m. Sunday Dan Patrick tweeted a photo with the words of Galatians 6:7. The verse reads, "Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows."

The Twitterverse circled the tweet, commenting that it was inappropriate and insensitive considering the context of the day's events.

"Tweeted as new breaks of mass casualties at a gay nightclub. Vile," one Twitter user said. "Have you no shame?"

Another verse was tweeted from the account 30 minutes later, this time from Psalm 37:39, which reads, "The Salvation of the righteous come from the Lord; He is their stronghold in time of trouble."

A Houston Chronicle request for comment was not immediately returned Sunday morning.

Orlando Police Chief John Mina says authorities have not determined an exact number of people killed, but that "approximately 50" have died.

Florida Department of Law Enforcement Special Agent in Charge Danny Banks says the mass shooting is being investigated as an act of terrorism. He says authorities are looking into whether this was an act of domestic or international terror, and if the shooter was a lone wolf.

Mina says the shooter was armed with an assault-type rifle, a handgun and some type of suspicious device. Police had said previously on Twitter that there was a "controlled explosion" at the scene of the shooting at Pulse Orlando. Mina says that noise was caused by a device intended to distract the shooter.

all it will take is Trump riding hard on the idea that this guy was a Democrat (and a Muslim) to get enough stupid and uneducated people to the polls voting for him

I'd like to hope that isnt the case, but I already know better

edit to add: Im not talking about just the LGBT community. I mean anyone who was undecided that could be easily swayed, if they hear "A Democrat was responsible for the shooting", they aren't voting Hillary

The victims of the horrific terrorist act, however, were targeted because they were part of the LGBT community....So it's going to be hard for Trump and crew to spin this...

Right now, LGBT issues such as the anti-transgendered bathroom state rulings popping up nation wide have become the rallying cause for the Right. So I don't see Trump and the GOP getting much traction off of this considering they are generally against the victims of this jaw-dropping shooting rampage/hate crime....

It's hard for Trump and crew to benefit off of this when it looks like dude was self-radicalized AND targeting a segment of folks that most of the GOP hates with a passion....

If the gunman attacked a club where Federal workers or "straight" Americans were partying, celebrating, then this could be a layup for Trump....

13032949, why do people pretend like the original ban did anything at all?
Posted by ConcreteCharlie, Sun Jun-12-16 12:19 PM
all the existing assault weapons were grandfathered in, as they should be since we cannot have/enforce laws ex-post-facto. that, however, made the sale legal to third parties. in the 90s you could go to any gun show and buy assault rifles still, and legally.

this is the same issue with any ban or strict regulation. we have enough guns for generations and generations to have a huge surplus.

the only things that would be meaningful would entail either a radical re-interpretation of the Second Amendment by the Supreme Court or a huge shift in our, gulp, our "cultural paradigm," or whatever buzz word you want to describe our attitudes, decisions and approach toward guns. In other words, don't hold your breath. Ain't shit gonna change.

Posted by Buddy_Gilapagos, Mon Jun-13-16 09:13 AM
that a crazy person can get access to a weapon that can kill 30 people in a matter of minutes is problematic.

And I am not anti-gun. I grew up with guns. Like shooting. Think more places could use more trained armed security guards.

But somehow they got us thinking that you have to be either/or. Either I am pro-taking everyone guns away or pro-no gun restriction of any kind. There has got to be a happy medium.

But at any rate dude was mentally ill. So was Adam Lanza and the dude behind the Colorado movie chain shooting. That's some ish that needs to be addressed.

13033154, Australia data shows gun controls a huge success 20 years after mass shooting

Australia data shows gun controls a huge success 20 years after mass shooting
http://www.reuters.com/article/us-australia-guns-idUSKCN0XP0HG

Australia on Thursday marked the 20th anniversary of a mass shooting which led to strict gun controls that have in turn led to a huge decline in gun murders, undermining claims in the United States that such curbs are not the answer.

The chances of being murdered by a gun in Australia plunged to 0.15 per 100,000 people in 2014 from 0.54 per 100,000 people in 1996, a decline of 72 percent, a Reuters analysis of Australian Bureau of Statistics figures showed.

In 1996, Australia had 311 murders, of which 98 were with guns. In 2014, with the population up from about 18 million to 23 million, Australia had 238 murders, of which 35 were with guns.

It was the April 28, 1996, shooting deaths by a lone gunman of 35 people in and around a cafe at a historic former prison colony in Tasmania that prompted the government to buy back or confiscate a million firearms and make it harder to buy new ones.

The country has had no mass shootings since.

The figures directly contradict assertions of most leading U.S. presidential candidates who have either questioned the need to toughen gun laws or directly denounced Australia's laws as dangerous.

In a January 2015 tweet, Republican front runner Donald Trump wrote "Fact – the tighter the gun laws, the more violence. The criminals will always have guns". A year later, Republican hopeful Ted Cruz blamed Australia's gun laws on a rise in sexual assault.

Democrat front runner Hillary Clinton has meanwhile ruled out an Australian-style gun buyback, while Democrat hopeful Bernie Sanders has rejected the need for tougher gun controls despite a gun murder rate of 3.4 per 100,000.

The U.S. National Rifle Association has attacked the Australian laws as "not the definition of common-sense".

Philip Alpers, an associate professor of University of Sydney's School of Public Health, who studies gun ownership and violence, said Australia's laws had had "demonstrable success".

"We have the most comprehensive suite of gun laws (in the world) and it would be a great shame to start whittling those down," he said.

Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull marked the anniversary by saying U.S. gun violence showed why Australia would keep its laws intact.

The rate of U.S. gun deaths shows "what happens when you have very little if any restrictions on the purchase of weapons like that", he told the Australian Broadcasting Corp.
13033184, they also have stricter immigration laws
Posted by legsdiamond, Mon Jun-13-16 11:51 AM
and it's an island down under.

If it was easier to get into Australia and had neighboring borders with a place like Mexico I get those numbers get thrown out the window.

I'm still for stricter gun laws but I don't think Australia is the best example.
13033237, Look at the real numbers though. It's not comparable.
Posted by Buddy_Gilapagos, Mon Jun-13-16 12:49 PM
Yeah they had a 72% decrease but then they only had 311 murders (98 with guns) to start. Those numbers for a country of about 20M people are less then you see in a major city like Baltimore with a population of 600k people. Too hard to compare.

Figure a 30 round magazine is standard, and you can buy ones that hold 100 rounds with ease. (And some that hold over 500.)

1 person with a gun CAN shoot 100 people really quickly - that's what the weapon is designed for.

This was a nightclub that was packed and he was a trained as a security guard so he knew some crowd control and how to shoot.

Cost for a new one: $1200 bucks

That's why we must ban AND confiscate military style weapons.

Do you know how many people actually own legal AR15's? LOL that would never happen... And just for the record all this gun control talk is for future purchases for law abiding citizens. There's a very large amount of these types of guns in the hands of criminals now. If authorities can't confiscate them from all the criminals in America now, what makes you think they will be able to in the future?
13033444, We *could* change the laws
Posted by handle, Mon Jun-13-16 08:14 PM
That's why I said in my post.
"That's why we must ban AND confiscate military style weapons."

Is the political will in this country for it? Probably not.

I do believe killing 50 people in a confined space with an automatic weapon is pretty much in anyone's grasp. Reports today said he visited the bar like 15 times - so planning where to stand , or he may have blocked exits (like the Virginia Tech guy) and then point and shoot.

I'm surprised (and thankful) it hasn't happened much more often.

We're a country with 10s of millions of fucking insane morons and you better believe Islamic terrorism would be a small part of our problems - domestic idiots would be blowing up federal buildings everywhere.

Early Sunday morning, Omar Mateen shot and killed 49 people at a gay nightclub in Orlando, perpetrating the deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history. Mateen, his father explained the next day, had repeatedly been angered by the sight of two men kissing. But according to witnesses, Mateen was also a regular at the club and exchanged messages with at least one gay man on a gay dating app.

“It’s the same guy,” Chris Callen, who performs under the name Kristina McLaughlin, told the Canadian Press. “He’s been going to this bar for at least three years.”

Ty Smith, who also goes by the name Aries, also said he’d seen Mateen being escorted drunk from the club, Pulse, on multiple occasions.

“(He’d get) really, really drunk... He couldn’t drink when he was at home—around his wife, or family. His father was really strict... He used to bitch about it,” Smith told the Canadian Press.

“Sometimes he would go over in the corner and sit and drink by himself, and other times he would get so drunk he was loud and belligerent,” Smith also explained to the Orlando Sentinel, which spoke with at least four clubgoers who remembered seeing Mateen at Pulse at least a dozen times. “We didn’t really talk to him a lot, but I remember him saying things about his dad at times... He told us he had a wife and child.”

Both Callen and Smith, who are married, tell the Canadian Press they stopped speaking to Mateen after he threatened them with a knife, apparently after someone made a joke about religion.

“He ended up pulling a knife,” Callen said. “He said if he ever messed with him again, you know how it’ll turn out.”

Mateen, who was married in 2009, was abusive and unstable, his ex-wife says. They were married for just a few months before her parents rescued her from their home in Florida, leaving most of her belongings behind. It’s still unclear if he was married again after their divorce was finalized in 2011.

Kevin West said the shooter, 29-year-old Omar Mateen, contacted him three months ago through a dating app called Jack'd.

"When he first contacted me, he was saying things like, 'What clubs are popping and things of that sort, what are good places to go?'" West said. "And I remember telling him, 'Oh, you can just look it up online because I don't go out that much."
West said he didn't think anything of it at the time. On Sunday morning, he said he met with FBI agents and showed them his communications with Mateen.
Thousands of people have donated blood in response to this shooting. More prayer vigils are scheduled Monday morning.
