I agree showing up with the United Colors of Benetton maybe wasn't the best approach, but he and his SO could have found a place together. Call me naive, but a couples love is a lot stronger than a landlords hate or bias IMO.

So it's not a direct statement that 40% of whites are racist however if:

MORE THAN 40% OF WHITE AMERICANS SAY “MANY” OR “ALMOST ALL” BLACK MEN ARE VIOLENT.

Interestingly enough 40% is (was) the amount of diehard Trump supporters i.e. his numbers never fell below that.
