It's convenient to have a list to refer to in stores and libraries and see what friends are reading, although only a couple friends apparently use it.
I enjoyed Things Fall Apart but it's been ages (1999...hmm wonder why?) since I read it.
I had a website going that was doing basically the same thing (http://www.inputjak.com/) before a friend told me about Goodreads which saves tons of time. Unfortunately until today I didn't realize I had to manually set the dates I read the books which would be nice to have and I've begun adding them back in. (I've read 33 books so far this year?!)
