Another time I was dating a messican girl from Chicago and I went to flaunt her to my boy at a party on Pitts campus. Her breath was kicking...

There's no pure pop bliss like Drunk In Love but songs like Sorry and Hold Up will be blasting at various BBQ's for the next 3-4 months.

Bringing up Madonna vs Beyonce is something that's been kicking in my head for a minute; at this stage in her career Madonna was most def. giving diminishing returns/rehashes in attempts to keep up with the current pop stars half her age. Be it her or her songwriters; motherhood and marital issues (as opposed to generic relationship woes) get no burn at this level of pop and for her to pull it off comfortably is a change. It's going to be interesting to see how her career shifts as she enters her 40's and beyond.

The Hive went after her! The Wikipedia page had me dying!

I believe that some of the album is about her and Jay. But some of it is about her parents. And she and Jay are good now. But like ive said before...every married couple has its issues. They were able to overcome their issues.

I'm happy for them and can't wait until the album appears on iTunes this week.

We had this discussion here before.
I was like "Jay-Z is tired of Beyonce's shit" or something to that effect and that post went NUTZ
And now, 3, 4, 5 years later Bey is comfortable and confident enough to admit yes, Jay was tired of her shit and that's what drove her to be in my bed* those nights at 3am

But yeah, I wish them the best for the benefit of Blue and their unborn but it's all good.

13010429, don't really care if it's autobio or not but
Posted by C. Thelonius, Sun Apr-24-16 06:57 PM
It being written by other people doesn't mean that it's not. Since the self-titled album, I get the feeling that she's taken much more control of the music's direction than when she was doing more straight R&B which was more of the producers' visions. So whether it's about her or not, I think it's definitely her say going into it the album lyrics.
13010427, ehhh some parts are just too obvious to believe otherwise
Posted by BrooklynWHAT, Sun Apr-24-16 06:49 PM
like this verse from Hold Up. how do you interpret this as anything other than being about Jay

Let's imagine for a moment that you never made a name for yourself
Or mastered wealth, they had you labeled as a king
Never made it out the cage, still out there movin' in them streets
Never had the baddest woman in the game up in your sheets
Would they be down to ride?
No, they used to hide from you, lie to you
But y'all know we were made for each other
So I find you and hold you down

the whole album aint about jay. it's about how the women in her fam relate to the men in their lives. and making the best you can out of some fucked up situations.

And her and her squad are really really good at it now..

pretty dope
13010439, This is exactly where I'm at with it.
Posted by Hitokiri, Sun Apr-24-16 07:34 PM
I'm happy that she's finally gotten to THIS level.
For years, I've thought Beyonce was spectacularly underwhelming... A shift started with that last album. It's come all the way through with this project.
She's about something now.
She's creating great art.

It would be foolish to think someone wouldn't borrow from their life/experiences, but like I said -- I don't think this is an autobio.
13010442, her music got better after her dad stopped managin her

13010532, Sidebar: Can we talk Warsan Shire, please?
Posted by C. Thelonius, Mon Apr-25-16 12:47 AM
I don't read as much as I did within the last few years due to taking care of ill parents, but I mainly read classic fiction, usually black and African lit with the occasional Hemingway or Russian realist, but always had a hard time looking for good contemporary writers. Shire's poetry on this album is amazing. I looked her up and found the Home poem, and was overwhelmed. Writers who have that ability to captivate and speak with such power in few words have always inspired me. Plus, I generally don't like poetry, mainly prefer prose or long-form fiction (which is ironic considering the brevity thing that I dig). I know some okayplayers got to be up on her, so I would love any recs or just general discussion on her stuff.
13010539, Those of you not impressed obviously haven't seen it. This is beautiful
Posted by mellowboogie, Mon Apr-25-16 02:32 AM
Art and Beyoncé has finally come in to her own as a woman, artist and icon. She is representing women on this album, all the hardships and tribulations women face, especially black women.
For me, she's saying that she's been through it too and, like other women, these are all the things she felt and all the processes she went through.
I'm really loving this new bey, and I really wasn't a fan.

Then add ego and pettiness to the mix

But they got the rita bored-a chick up next

If true, Maaaaan no way that was worth it

I was hovering over the free trial last night when my girl came through with the Free.99

This is a serious piece of work, ladies and gentlemen. I'm not taking it as autobiographical... it obviously takes in her experience from Jay and he doesn't come out unscathed, but it's been moulded into a full album that digs into the relationships Black women find themselves in in America. It's an album all teenage girls and boys should listen to. Even when she's tearing Jay apart she's acknowledging that esteem issues are at play on both sides of the gender divide... lamenting the male-dominated, aggressive culture at the heart of too many lives that leaves men incapable of love and inexorably drawn to the grave and jailhouse and women stuck in a cycle of heartbreak and grief.

Not many pop acts can grab my attention like this in 2016.
13010558, its also about her Mother and Father's relationship
Posted by Castro, Mon Apr-25-16 07:16 AM
13010635, Yeah, definitely.
Posted by TheAlbionist, Mon Apr-25-16 09:43 AM
I think it's supposed to be a sort of amalgamation of the black woman's experience of relationships and family... so it takes hers, her Mom, maybe her sisters/friends experiences and flattens them into one massive piece of work.

Whatever it is, isn't or whatever is true or not... it's one hell of a pop record.
13010554, winners don't quit on themselves...
Posted by Trinity444, Mon Apr-25-16 06:55 AM
I wasn't feeling the formation song but it makes a lot more sense now hearing the album. By far this is her best work.

I also don't think jay cheated
rather, good marketing...

as opposed to a singing dancing pop-robot made in a factory.

It's also nice to see a pop star mature in topics as opposed to 30, 40, 50 year olds still trying to keep up with the 20 year old pop jonses,

While its been a rough year death wise, as far as music is concerned 2016 has been flames.

I tried to listen to the album by itself and it didn't move me, not sayin it ain't good but...
13010584, I'm not really hearing the emotion on this album.
Posted by soulfunk, Mon Apr-25-16 08:14 AM
Yeah it's there in the songwriting and lyrics, but her voice still sounds like generic-good-singer-voice. I don't hear any of the feeling and emotion in the voice, so it sounds more like an actor playing a role.
13010587, you aint really listen then

13010631, i forgot Beyonce existed.

Prince died.

i just heard about the album 5 minutes ago. i haven't been online since Saturday night.
13010632, I was wondering where you were lol

13010647, i just tried to care about this album and movie
Posted by SoWhat, Mon Apr-25-16 09:54 AM
and i don't.

i listened to the first 2 songs and they were 'eh'. and the video - i can't get past the part w/her kneeling in front of that red curtain b4 i turn it off.

and hearing that the Hive is attacking Rachel Roy AND Rachel Ray b/c they're THAT stupid just turns me off from this whole project. i don't give a fuck if Jay fucked Rachel from friends. i don't give a fuck about hearing Yonce whining over piano about being a bad bitch that he cheated on and going through his phone and whatever the hell.

plus Prince died.
13010649, **faints**

i love you :) lol

i think she should have pushed the release date back out of respect for Prince (that's the first thing that turned me off). but naw, bey gotta get every drop of shine on her.
13011114, oh no - I don't think that at all.
Posted by HotThyng76, Tue Apr-26-16 06:15 AM
I don't care much for Yonce as a general matter. She cool but not one of my faves, as P's death made crystal clear. There is no act who couldve released anything that would've drawn my attention from Prince this week. Period. So I'm fine with the world going on as scheduled - MINE will not. I understand this thing was in the works for too long to postpone its release. I don't expect that Yonce or anyone postpone a release bc I'm deep in my feelings and off into Prince records and stuff. Hell, it's Yonce - I'd struggle to care regardless.

13011840, Prince dies Thursday. She has an HBO Special on Saturday
Posted by caramelapplebttms, Tue Apr-26-16 05:12 PM
Exactly HOW would she have done that?

Would you have postponed an event months (years?) in the making because someone died? I hope not, cause that's goofy.

And why?
Prince didn't celebrate holidays and only 20 people were invited to his funeral. He definitely wouldn't have wanted art to be put on pause for his death.
13010640, Dog I legit teared up by the end of it
Posted by Mafamaticks, Mon Apr-25-16 09:48 AM
It hit so close to home.
13010650, I was like "Damn, Yonce's poetry has really improved!"
Posted by Teknontheou, Mon Apr-25-16 09:57 AM
Then I read it was some Somali chick from the UK who wrote all of that. At least she has good taste.

13010685, I just want her to start writing good tunes.
Posted by Teknontheou, Mon Apr-25-16 10:28 AM
I had it on last night and was doing other things, so I wasn't listening closely. But I still don't hear good tunes. I hear ideas and fragments and some sounds that probably caught her ear that she ran with (pure speculation on my part).

It's for that reason that I very much believe she *is* writing her own songs, or imposing her will upon her co-writers, for the most part. Her best songs were written basically by other people (Me, Myself And I; Irreplaceable; Love On Top).
13010714, i had it on while doing other things as well
Posted by legsdiamond, Mon Apr-25-16 11:02 AM
but IMO these tunes sounded good to my ears.

maybe I'm different but I don't need deep, dark insightful lyrics from Beyonce for her to be legit.

I just want it to sound good and IMO this project accomplished that goal.
13010771, I feel like this is exactly what she was going for.
Posted by Teknontheou, Mon Apr-25-16 12:21 PM
>deep, dark insightful
>lyrics

By mentioning the songs I like the most from her, I'd rather hear that: simple stuff with great melodies and good rhythms.

I'll give it another listen soon.
13010780, win, lose, or draw, she gets paid off of all of that
Posted by SooperEgo, Mon Apr-25-16 12:34 PM
beyonce gets cheated on and the story makes her millions.

you get cheated on and the story might not get 100 replies in GD.
13010914, yonce out here trollin. her and jay prolly stronger than ever.

The album is the full arc of their relationship. Foul-up, forgiveness and moving forward.

Grown-up shit.
13011845, it's all been calculated imo..for this project

13011010, this is her Amnesiac..she put her foot in it on this one
Posted by rdhull, Mon Apr-25-16 05:58 PM
This is a nice distraction for me in mourning of Prince
13011128, Btw, if Jay cheated on Yonce the LAST thing she'd do
Posted by HotThyng76, Tue Apr-26-16 07:28 AM
is to make an entire album and movie about the shit. As intensely private as she is she would not open herself up to repeated questions about something so personal and painful as THAT shit. That's not her - she's not that messy. Plus she would not have him in the damned movie. I just don't see it.

The lyrics are most likely fiction based on stories she and others have heard from anywhere - we have ALL heard this story even if we haven't lived it. Shit - I could make a 'fuck that motherfucker' album today when I'm very much in like with a guy who has not wronged me at all. I would tap former personal and observed experiences. That's how we create fiction. It's not a new thing. This thing here is most likely that - fiction.
