home rent-free
-Set up the Dreamville Foundation

I don't care what he shows up wearing.
He shows up for the right reasons.

I see exactly how it works. The only difference
is you have to insult ppl when you disagree with
them like an untrained 4 yr old.

>Or I could've done what this whole post was about and shown u

That would have required you being a respectful
person to begin with.

Not wearing a suit to go to the White House when former drug dealers like Pusha T has enough smarts and respect to wear one is fucking hilarious lol

Even racist republicans know to wear a suit when you get invited to his house lol

There we go again. Anyone who disagrees with you
is lacking smarts in your small brain.

>Even racist republicans know to wear a suit when you get
>invited to his house lol

Yet they still disrespect him, because
that "disrespect" argument is usually
about the way he's treated and addressed,
not what the person has on.

1. Sartorialist David Tang suggests calling the WH social secretary for advice:

https://next.ft.com/content/1b617614-0a73-11e3-9cec-00144feabdc0

"If, however, you are going to a small gathering or a fairly intimate repast (of no more than a dozen, say), then it would be perfectly in order to telephone the presidential social secretary at the White House for the exact dress code: not to ascertain what you are not required to wear, but what you are asked to wear."

2. from the pix i've seen all the other folks who attended the meeting wore suits. J. Cole stuck out. i suspect that happened b/c those other ppl were (properly) advised to wear suits. maybe b/c they or their ppl called the WH social secretary. or b/c they just have common sense.

Posted by SoWhat, Mon Apr-18-16 11:10 AM
is this devil's advocacy or do you actually believe it's acceptable for a person to show up for a business meeting w/the POTUS at the WH dressed in sweatpants?

like, if your son had a meeting w/the POTUS at the WH would you be okay w/him showing up for that in the same clothes he'd wear to go play basketball w/his friends?

13006301, oh okay.
Posted by SoWhat, Mon Apr-18-16 11:23 AM
you're one of those.

right on.

most ppl and most parents understand that there are situations where ppl need to dress up to show respect for an occasion or person. like when a person is going to court where they are a party to civil or criminal or family case - generally they're advised to at least wear business casual clothing. the point is to show the judge that they respect her/his authority by wearing clothing other than casual or relatively informal stuff. similarly many houses of worship ask congregants/parishioners/visitors/et al to dress up to show honor to a deity and to the congregation itself. the same is true when meeting heads of state or royalty when one has been formally invited to meet w/the head of state to discuss business.

i'm sure this isn't new to you.

anyway, that's why some of us are bristling at J. Cole's attire - it seems disrespectful. or like he didn't take the meeting seriously. like he wasn't honored to be invited to have an audience w/the POTUS. especially considering we're talking about the first black prez and J. Cole is a young black man invited to speak w/the president about Cole's work on mentoring programs targeting young black men. his appearance kinda sent the wrong message to the young black men he mentors - considering he'd be wise to advise them that when they're invited to a meeting like that they should dress in a manner that presents them in their best light and communicates respect for the person/org w/whom they're meeting. showing up in sweatpants for that meeting doesn't accomplish that.

i have no idea what you're going on about.

i'd advise a student not to wear Daisy Dukes and high heels to school b/c that outfit likely violates the school's dress code as it's likely to disrupt the learning environment. but even if it doesn't i'd advise the kid to consider wearing something else that shows s/he is taking school seriously.

The idea that we have to be wearing suits
to be respected as human beings, etc.
That was probably one of the main issues
discussed, and of the people present, it's
very possible that he had the most insightful
things to say.
I'd love to see an interview where
someone asks him about why he chose to

this is about J. Cole SHOWING respect by dressing up for a business meeting w/the first black POTUS at the WH in order to discuss his work mentoring black youth.
13006323, Right?

What is your skepticism based on?
13006332, 'skepticism'?
Posted by SoWhat, Mon Apr-18-16 12:04 PM
no.

i have a problem w/what J. Cole wore to the WH for a business meeting w/the POTUS b/c that attire showed disrespect to the POTUS. i disagree that J. Cole needed to dress up in order be shown respect BY the POTUS. the POTUS should show that respect w/o regard for what J. Cole wears. but J. Cole displayed bad form by not dressing up for that occasion.
13006431, You're skeptical regarding the possible truth of my assessment.

Posted by SoWhat, Mon Apr-18-16 01:42 PM
i meant that we here in this post are not engaged in respectability politics as i understand that phrase.

i'm not saying J. Cole didn't deserve to be respected b/c of his attire. i'm saying that he showed disrespect by dressing as he did. so 'this' ain't that. meaning - the criticism of J. Cole ain't respectability politics. i wasn't speaking on J. Cole's motives for wearing that outfit - i dunno why he wore it.

that stuck w/me b/c it went along w/lessons i'd learned from my parents that'd been reinforced at school and in church - the importance of appropriate presentation when one is trying to effectively communicate. and as a lawyer i apply that lesson considering i'm in the business of persuasion. i understand that the ppl w/whom i'm communicating are more likely to receive my message if i present myself appropriately given the context in which i'm presenting. so i'll wear a suit to court when i'm trying to persuade other lawyers and judges and juries. i'll dress up when i'm meeting w/clients. i might not dress up in a suit when i'm out on an investigation. i might not dress up when i'm meeting another lawyer outside court - depending. but anyway, point is - presentation matters.

i'd definitely dress up if i were invited to the WH to meet w/the POTUS about a program or an issue that's crucial to me. b/c i'd want my message to be received and i wouldn't want the POTUS to spend too much time thinking about what i'm wearing such that he might not hear what i'm saying.
13006414, the trash can lid always stuck with me as well

but real talk, why does okp get so upset when discussing female attire when it comes to short dresses and plunging neck lines?

or sagging pants???

seems like as soon as we have that discussion everyone runs back to the other side and claims a pers9n can wear what they want.

It's already a trip when doctors are around your age or even younger but that threw me off.

Turn out to be a good doctor though.

When I was fresh out of college I was on some appearance didn't matter it's all about the brains. Took me awhile to get the importance of the whole appearance thing. Like I just started buying ish that fit me in the last five years.

13006452, How do you fail to separate his message from being dressed appropriately?
Posted by PimpTrickGangstaClik, Mon Apr-18-16 01:46 PM
Nobody is questioning his message or even his qualifications. That is a completely separate issue from the way that he is dressed to meet the president.

What if he showed up in his drawers? Would that be okay? I mean he still has a good message and he graduated from college, so what does that matter.
13006740, A better question...

no one is calling for Cole to have been arrested by police due to his attire and indeed he wasn't arrested. his right to dress as he pleased is not questioned.

the question is whether his attire was rude. bad decorum. disrespectful. distasteful. ill-mannered.

but we agree that he was well w/in his rights as an American citizen to wear what he wore.

Wearing a suit or at least dressing in a business casual outfit for this one occasion would not have killed him. I swear, some of you cats on this site will defend some of the dumbest things in the name of non conformity.

Pusha T's probably the only true 'Illustrious School of The Corner Boy' graduate and even his ass showed up looking like a Reverend.

While I do love what J Cole does as far as causes are concerned, something about him irks me...as if he's putting up a well calculated front.

Similar to how he was a bit irked when people found out he was married...there's this image he's trying to cultivate that seems fake.
