I'm with you that once you're in that situation being calm, non-threatening and out of the way is the best plan.

But no way I'm purposely getting close enough to even see a brown bear without a structure or substantial vehicle to hide inside. Nope. Heard and read too many stories about people getting fucked up by grizzlies.

they should have moved upward, away from the beach, at least putting more distance than two feet between them. at that range, you will not outrun a bear, but i'm also not standing right near one.

In the absolute wrong circumstance they'll still fuck you up but mostly they run away from humans.

Brown bears are known to kill and maim just for fun. They give no fucks.

while i was at Yosemite a few years back. amazingly, the bear took the food, and left. after the bear left, i approached them and told them straight out that that was stupid and dangerous. that's when i realized they were high out of their fucking minds, and i don't mean weed.

what was even scarier than the encounter was camping that night in the same spot, and so every few minutes and every little sound was "is that the bear? is the bear back? what was that? you think that bear's still around? bear?"

we decided to pack it in the next day, which was a day early

and also didn't eat the acid we had brought with us

(actually, funny footnote, is that when we left on the trip we forgot the acid at home and turned around about an hour in our drive to go back and get it - turned out to be a nonstarter lol)

These people are nuts though. If you see a bear from a afar....take a look and enjoy. If you happen upon them accidentally then calmly walk away. Seeking them out is disrespectful and there's a weird contradiction in that type of behavior. Romanticizing nature results in us behaving unnaturally.

If you're in the US, it's likely the majority of people they see out and about are White.
Animals have different senses of sight & smell, there may be a slight difference.
