all those "street album" rapper mixtapes are highly disposable with very few exceptions (Clipse Got it for cheap series, Kanye's early stuff: I'm good, Kon Louis Vuitton, and can't tell me nothing, Fab's Soul tape series, J Cole Friday Night Lights)
Now an actual skilled DJ mixtape, those were the foundation of hip hop. I was a Tony Touch fiend back in the day, and more recent stuff like Neil Armstrong and J. Period

We used to put a lot of effort into DJ mixtapes back inna day, something you don't see much of these days. Get home from the record pool with some brand new hot shit you gotta crank out a new tape within the next day, if not that evening, to be the cat that had the latest shit out there.

as a Currensy,Krit,Clipse fans...listening to mixtapes from 10 years ago is a requirement
or mixtapes that have cuts that didnt make the album or rare
if its a mixtape of released music nah

the list goes on, now that I think bout it im more

Fab for example has a mixtape catalog that can't be ignored. Those shits are albums and will still bump 10 years from now.

Like when I listen to the Mood Musik series by Joe Budden and those are not mixtapes to me...then again as good as the Dedication series by Lil Wayne is it sound like he's just fucking around on beats.

I have no problem with that considering the difference in quality/sequencing and even mastering is pretty negligible at this point.
Seems the concept of an official release is more a way to hype up an eventual major label album+budget, which tends to suck because they feel forced to cram in guest appearances by Kacey Musgraves. im hardpressed to think of a new artist in the past 5 year's who had a decent discography in mixtapes who actually ups the quality when they release a proper major label album; its usually the opposite.

being a hip hop head, I haven't found a dope mixtape but thats just my opinion. I focus more so on albums
