12976609, If you've been to Puerto Rico, help me out

I'm flying next tueday. I'll be there until Friday. I'm going to rent a car, and plan on driving the entire island. also thinking of maybe trying to get to one of the islands off the coast. looking for a few good places to eat, any ideas on mandatory things to do/see, etc etc.

i think there's 3 bays in the country, with this as the brightest, and it was once one you could swim in too. no tours if the moon's out though.
12976670, Vieques is the one island i was looking at

12976717, My wife and I went to Culebra Island for a day. It was well worth it.

We rode out to Fajardo on the eastern coast and were about to hop on the fairy when we found out it sold out. You have to make sure you get there early and on time if you want a guaranteed ride. I believe the fairy only goes out to the islands like 3 times a day.

Anyway, we chatted it up another couple who happened to be fluent in Spanish (not entirely necessary, but helpful for a great time in PR) and caught a taxi cab together for a ride to the airport nearby. We ended up getting a flight into Culebra Island on a small 6-seater plane. It only cost us like $25 for a one way trip. It was worth every penny. The ride was like 10 minutes but scenic. We get to Culebra and then got ride to Flamenco (I think that was the name) Beach. Surprisingly, it wasn't that crowded. Crystal clear waters and great food nearby. We spent the entire afternoon there and caught the fairy back (like a good 45 minutes or so) at like 5 or 6.
12976637, El Yunque....also look up Giligan's Island...

Seriously...that's where the locals go to hang out away from tourists. Head there, bring you a cooler with some liquor and food, and get you a little Boricua bunny.

La Placita in Santurce (Thurs., Fri. and Sat.) for music/food
La Respuesta in Santurce on Monday nights
Newyourican Cafe in Old San Juan for live salsa music
Kiosko de Bouriqua in Loiza (rte. 187) for alcapurrias (fritters)

There's a dope interactive P.R. music history museum in Ponce (90 minutes south of San Juan). If you go stop at King's Ice Cream in downtown Ponce.

Beaches:
Luquillo
Playa Sucia
Flamenco Beach (Culebra)
Red Beach (Vieques)

I highly recommend getting a flight from a smaller airport (Isla Verde or Cieba) to Vieques or Culebra. Its inexpensive, a 20 minute ride, and you can avoid the hellish ferry.
