12974181, 58th Annual Grammy Awards Posted by Hitokiri, Mon Feb-15-16 05:55 PM
I normally don't really care about awards shows, but I'm invested in this one. The pre-show awards are already being announced. We're supposed to get a controversial performance that will have white folks up in arms. Let's get these awards!

12974214, 'song' awards are for the songwriter(s). Posted by SoWhat, Mon Feb-15-16 06:55 PM
'performance' awards are for the performer(s), producer(s) and engineer(s).
|
12974216, Ah okay. Thanks. Posted by Hitokiri, Mon Feb-15-16 06:57 PM
So let's say Taylor Swift doesn't write a song that wins a song category. She get an award or not?
|
12974219, No, she would not win in that case. Posted by SoWhat, Mon Feb-15-16 07:05 PM
Like in 1985, Prince won Best R&B Song for 'I Feel For You' and Chaka Khan didn't get an award. It's bc he wrote the song, not her. But she won Best R&B Vocal Performance by a Female and Prince didn't get an award bc he didn't perform, produce or engineer the winning recording. Note - Prince's original version was released 6 years earlier.
|
12974202, Common and John Legend won for Glory too. Posted by daryloneal, Mon Feb-15-16 06:38 PM

12974224, So pumped Ghost's "Cirice" won for Best Metal Performance. Posted by PROMO, Mon Feb-15-16 07:10 PM
Not only was unquestionably the right choice, but bum-assed Slipknot winning would have been a travesty.
I'm not sure of past metal winners' theological leanings, but I was curious if this is the first time a band who openly lauds Satan in their music won a Grammy.
Amazing song AND video:

To make room for more perfomances, I think. Best rap album was the first category for the main show though.

he's the musical version of wayne brady
I don't recall any push back for Glory
but somehow K. and Bey are too black
that sort of thing...
|
12974754, exactly. Posted by Hitokiri, Tue Feb-16-16 02:20 PM
how many award shows has he performed on in the past 5-6 years? damn near all of them.
What impactful songs has he released over the same time period? Glory. Anything else?
When do you see and hear from him outside of award shows? You kinda don't.
But he's the first name called when it comes to this shit.

It's a phenomenon....There are people around the way that ain't never bothered with Broadway trying to get tickets to Hamilton....The toughest ticket in town....
Breaking box office records....Obama AND evil ass Dick Cheney in the audience watching a hip-hop musical about America's forefathers...George Washington is black. Alexander Hamilton is Puerto Rican....
What's not to like?

There's not one particular reason, homie....
It could be the hip-hop angle mixed with its historical Birth of America storyline.....Personally, when I see YOUNG people of color winning on some improbable shit I'm down....

12974560, My Favorite performances... Posted by Tiggerific, Tue Feb-16-16 11:21 AM
K. Dot just had the BLACKEST PERFORMANCE EVER ON TV!!!!! That shit was beautiful to see! It made Beyonce's performance at the Super Bowl look like Kidz Bop in comparison. I loved that shit! So...White People probably will lose their frakkin minds on the inter webs today.
The Alabama Shakes...LOVE THEM!!!! :) And the performance was cool. :)
Hamilton!!!! I cannot wait to see that shit in SF next year! I'm looking for tickets ASAP and putting the date on my calendar!
I loved the BB King Tribute. That was a great performance, and I was about to be disappointed but when Bonnie came out...I was good. She was the cherry.
But...my favorite performance of the night...even though Kendrick brought that shit...was Stevie and Pentatonix. That just did it for me. Not GAGA, Not Adele (she had some issues though), not the Lionel Tribute...Pentatonix and Stevie.
|
12974633, I agree Posted by Shimmy, Tue Feb-16-16 12:31 PM
that performance gave me the chills.
And the Lemmy tribute. The idea of Ace of Spades blaring while his giant ugly face shone over the crowd---made me super happy!!

I've long said Kendrick got the Blackest album we've heard in Hip Hop, in years, but James Brown, Earth Wind & Fire, Stevie? Can't just be handing out "Blackest EVER" awards that easily. It's definitely the Blackest in years tho.

12974624, I was at the show...my first time going to it Posted by -DJ R-Tistic-, Tue Feb-16-16 12:24 PM
The crowd's reaction to Kendrick was very, very interesting where I sat. This one White guy next to me was obviously a "down one" who was SUPER HYPE the whole performance. Then, there was a brown skinned lady with short blonde hair who was standing up dancing HARD the whole time, with literally everyone next to her sitting completely still. There were a few White folks with a cool head nod, but most sat with a completely blank, confused reaction like you saw on TV. Nobody said a single thing, good or bad, after he finished.
The same "Down white guy" who was next to us though.....when Taylor Swift won album of the year, he was PISSSSSSSSSSSED.....he screamed out "NOOO!!!! NO!!! How the fuck, Academy???" and put his head down and might have even started crying. Then, he said "where's Kanye when you need him??"
I feel like Adele's performance actually sounded and felt better in person than from how it appeared on TV. It didn't seem as pitchy for some reason through the sound system there.

12974651, Kendrick killed it!!! Posted by EAS, Tue Feb-16-16 12:44 PM
Bey......who.....form....what? The performance gave me chills. Speechless. Kendrick gave a tense slam performance and rapped his ass off. I am in awe. I cannot remember a Grammy performance where a rapper brought that much energy to the stage. Even Kanye's flailing around in past performances doesn't match up.
Whoa. Thank you K. Dot for making mad people uncomfortable and bringing issues to the forefront via art. We know you don't have all the answers, or not always well informed, but at least you are sparking more conversation and the momentum has picked up. This momentum will set us on the right path to eventual solutions....no matter how many years, decades, centuries, it will take.
Big up Beyonce and K. Dot for their uncomfortable performances within 2 weeks. I wonder if there is going to be a 3rd mainstream artist to bring it.
And I hope this 'awareness' doesn't disappear once February, Black History Month, is over.

12974664, 58th Annual Grammy Awards = Turrabull (c) Posted by bentagain, Tue Feb-16-16 12:55 PM
I always tune in to the grammys, since a kid
can't remember a show this bad, TBH
nothing fit, there was no flow to it, at all
maybe that's a reflection of where we are as a society
but there was such a huge disconnect between the performers
it was hard to sit through
they continue to force feed us this country music BS
leave that to the CMAs, we don't care
it felt like they decided on the set list...one for you...one for me
here's K.
but now you have to listen to some white middle of the road act that you never cared about
shit was bad, real bad
them old dusty mfers need to resign, and let some new blood take over
Ccrest, and that other dude, they're not it.
|
12974748, I thought all Grammy shows were like this Posted by legsdiamond, Tue Feb-16-16 02:13 PM
I always turned the channel or used those boring acts as a chance to get a drink/use the bathroom
|
12974778, IMO, it's become an increasing problem since the show they decided to Posted by bentagain, Tue Feb-16-16 02:36 PM
do the mashups...Elton/Gaga <-- that show, not sure of the year
but it was an obvious attempt to make these old dusty acts relevant to a new audience
and I want to say that was on the heels of Em/Elton opening a prior show, which didn't feel as forced
in addition to the death of music radio, for me anyway, I don't even know what radio programming sounds like today
compared to my youth, the radio was jammin' 24/7
the grammys use to be an opportunity for a couple of new acts to get national exposure
now, I don't know most of the acts, and they aren't impressing me at all.
I know, you know, we know...what's hittin'
half the show is shyte being forced on the viewer now, IMO
it didn't feel like that 15-20 years ago, IMO.
no rock acts...other than being force fed hollywood vampires, which was cool for what it was no indie rock/alternative acts, EDM, etc...
just pop, r&b, or country...and no attempt to connect them.
Ccrest is turning this jawn into the billboard awards
there use to be a difference.
|
12974913, Prince and Beyonce opened 2004 Posted by go mack, Tue Feb-16-16 06:04 PM
That one worked well tho, Prince had kinda stayed low for a while and was his first major awards show appearance in a while iirc and was kind of a comeback moment along with his Rock & Roll HOF induction.
That was really the last memorable opening act I can even remember.

12974954, Not to mention neither of those albums was 100% hip hop Posted by Oak27, Tue Feb-16-16 08:07 PM
OutKast was half hip hop, half whatever the fuck Andre was doing. And The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill has only a handful of verses. That is more of an R&B album with some featured rapping.
|
12975264, Yep. And to me...Andre's album on it's own could have won AOTY Posted by -DJ R-Tistic-, Wed Feb-17-16 01:17 PM

12975067, RE: T.Swift now has 2 grammys for AOTY. Same as the entire genre of hip hop Posted by Deacon Blues, Wed Feb-17-16 06:29 AM
I don't understand why people put so much value into this
And oscars so white
Still waiting on the white man to validate you
The Grammys weren't made for hip hop, they like what they like
Hip hop has its on institutions, and awards from those institutions should be more valuable to hip hop
There is a lot of great music , not just hip hop that you don't see represented at the grammys
But award shows are stupid any way, just an opportunity for a bunch of overrated people to jack each other off and to continue to promote the evil industry agenda

he didn't write or sing it but i guess he played on it since he was a group member then.
but yes i too was bothered that the song was included. it'd be like singing 'Yesterday' in tribute to John Lennon. but at least technically Lennon is credited as a co-writer on 'Yesterday' though he didn't write any of it.
EDIT - Lionel IS credited as a co-writer on 'Brick House'. but still...that's not his song and it was out of place in a Lionel Richie tribute.
