Nike was a rinky dink start up at the time. It was a lot more likely that that 10% would be worthless than worth billions.

On the other end of the spectrum is the dude who turned down $60k cash to paint a mural from Facebook in 2005 and instead took stock options. He got about $200 mil from that deal.
