rich fucks that'll have no impact on me or my life and they'll still be rich assholes after they lose but now they can't lrverage the trophy into more chances to get more rich and make no difference in my life or in the world at large yet too many hours of time will be wasted wondering which rich jerk will win what and wear who on a some awful night in February. That's a hell of a sequel.....
12956839, No Creed, No Hateful 8 outside the tech categories
Posted by BigReg, Thu Jan-14-16 09:32 AM
Kinda surprised here. Particularly how it seems that The Martian kind of took the spots they should have been in.
12956840, Charlize snubbed too.
Posted by SoWhat, Thu Jan-14-16 09:33 AM
majorly, IMO. but, of course, AMPAS doesn't understand action flicks.
12956844, Embarrassing omission.
Posted by Frank Longo, Thu Jan-14-16 09:37 AM
Maybe my favorite performance of the year in any category. It'll last far longer than any of the eventual Oscar winners' performances. It's an all-timer.

Meanwhile, I've already forgotten Joy.
12956846, same here.
Posted by SoWhat, Thu Jan-14-16 09:40 AM
wtf?

and the performance has such a great story to go along w/it. all the feminism/girl-power/lesbianism/triumph-of-the-disabled stuff...

it's GOLD! i can't believe they missed it.
12956862, Not enough scenery-chewing.
Posted by Frank Longo, Thu Jan-14-16 09:54 AM
Nothing the Academy loves more than scenery-chewing.

There's a fairly easy game to play to determine if an actor has a real chance at an Oscar nomination. Can you immediately pick out which scene they would play at the ceremony as you watch the movie? It must involve either crying or shouting.

I didn't think Theron had an obvious Oscar scene (maybe the scene where she discovers the green place is gone? That'd be my best guess). She was too busy giving a great performance.

(It's worth pointing out that I love 4 of the 5 nominees in that category-- but they were all pretty easy-to-peg Oscar performances, save for Ronan, who, while she does cry, does really lovely understated work. But goddamn, I've already forgotten the J-Law movie.)
12956851, Blanchett is basically the new Streep IMO
Posted by Amritsar, Thu Jan-14-16 09:43 AM
a lock for at least one nomination every year

It's almost boring how fucking good she is

12956864, Was really surprised by how subtle this Blanchett performance was.
Posted by Frank Longo, Thu Jan-14-16 09:56 AM
Very restrained, very internalized.

They do unleash her for her one big "Oscar scene" toward the end, but outside of that, it might be her subtlest performance to date. Which I love.

I'm actually surprised Streep didn't get any momentum for her performance in Ricki and the Flash, which was another absolutely lovely performance and a lovely movie.
12956858, I'm here for Room...
