Given the vitality and status of R&B back in the day versus now, it’s hard to avoid making this list top heavy with vintage soul performers.

For better or worse, R&B doesn’t carry the banner for black music as a whole anymore.

It’s been eclipsed by pop and hip-hop for at least the last 20-25 years.

I think this list reflects that.
