12914174, Help me ditch cable pt. 2
Posted by Geah, Wed Oct-21-15 09:48 AM
I fee so dumb i bought a Roku around xmas.

Firestick + Kodi + Beast = Greatness

I watch 90 percent of my tv off the computer either I download, put to usb, plug in tv watch....or just watch it off the computer...

I ONLY watch cable for the dvr. I dvr shit like Jamie Foxx, Martin n shit like that...just for if cable and internet goes out i got something to watch on tv to be lazy

but i REALLY dont need cable at all.......

at

all....
12914178, i just ordered the fire stick with the voice control
Posted by BigJazz, Wed Oct-21-15 09:53 AM
once it arrives i'll be searching the boards for stuff to put on it. i know i wasn't trying to pay $150-$200 for some shit i can figure out how to do myself...

***
I'm tryna be better off, not better than...
12914181, i dont understand how people are paying for it, and it's not
Posted by Kwesi, Wed Oct-21-15 09:57 AM
guaranteed to work.

goofy stuff.
12914260, it's worked for the 20 some-odd people i know who bought it
Posted by BigJazz, Wed Oct-21-15 10:52 AM
i was supposed to buy one and figure out how to load it and sell them myself but i never got around to it.

and the people who pay for it are people that can't/don't want to figure out what to put on it.

***
I'm tryna be better off, not better than...
12914617, wait what? people are paying that much to have Kodi installed?
Posted by gumz, Wed Oct-21-15 03:32 PM
it literally takes 20 mins...damn...i might need to start caking up
12914180, cutting the cord is cool, but xfinity's X1 is tight as shit.
Posted by Kwesi, Wed Oct-21-15 09:56 AM
my biggest beef with cable was the UI.

X1 nailed the UI.

...

i've installed kodi and the beast on my fire stick. it's ok.

the beast got me cracking up with the menus.

i showed the old lady like, 'look honey there's a whole section for you ... chick flicks, romance, drama ... isn't this cool?'

she's like 'great ...'

we get to clicking and most stuff doesn't seem to work all the time.

that makes the experience suck.

and not worth it.
12914186, did you really just give Comcast props up in here?? lol...LMAO...

"Get ready..for your blessing..."
12914191, and yeah...like I said in High Tech... Kodi gonna Kodi...
Posted by FLUIDJ, Wed Oct-21-15 10:02 AM
Shit still requires a tad too much massaging for the casual user...

BUT.... if you don't own a Fire Stick or plan on buying a Fire Stick in the near future.....you should rethink things...

"Get ready..for your blessing..."
12914227, I have zero problems with it
Posted by Geah, Wed Oct-21-15 10:27 AM
12914496, you're lying
Posted by Kwesi, Wed Oct-21-15 01:58 PM
12914521, Nope, I have had nary a problem w/ it myself.
Posted by placee_22, Wed Oct-21-15 02:08 PM
When I was adding repos myself, I had issues here and there, but since I got that Beast, shit's been smooth sailing.
12914867, ZERO problems
Posted by Geah, Thu Oct-22-15 08:59 AM
lol maybe i dont watch the same shit he does but the tv shows be on point for me..
12914187, I'm too skitish to try the non-Roku products
Posted by Numba_33, Wed Oct-21-15 10:01 AM
because I'm not sure I trust using Wi-Fi in my place. I'll stubbornly stick with my Ethernet connected Roku 3 at the moment.

Are you able to get PPV events live with the Wi-Fi piracy route?
12914190, i havent had cable for 3 months and i dont miss it
Posted by legsdiamond, Wed Oct-21-15 10:02 AM
only thing that sucks is watching sports live and the signal fucking up...

but the only reason it doesn't suck is because I have 2 family members cable passwords.

so I really haven't cut cable but that bill is gone.

12914194, Roku+HBO Now+Hulu Plus +Netflix + torrents = set for life
Posted by double negative, Wed Oct-21-15 10:05 AM
the only thing i cant get are NBC sports because Im not a cable user so.....I just wait and torrent shit

kinda crazy how they make it hard for us to give them our money

Are you referring to NBC Sports Network?
12914205, yes. I'm a bit of a special case as I follow Formula 1 heavily
Posted by double negative, Wed Oct-21-15 10:11 AM
and its only available through NBC LEGALLY

otherwise I gotta go through BBC or SKYsports
12914214, NBC Sports Network is available through Sling TV
Posted by Numba_33, Wed Oct-21-15 10:14 AM
You have to pay $5 extra over the $15 base package because it's in the $5 sports package, but it's available for you.
12914219, eh. i go to a bi monthly group and watch in a bar.
Posted by double negative, Wed Oct-21-15 10:17 AM
12914717, Same
Posted by sectachrome86, Wed Oct-21-15 05:50 PM
If you can use someone's cable account info, you can stream/replay the races on NBC Sports Live Extra. But one of the main reasons I still have cable is for F1. I don't want to watch it on my computer screen, and I need to DVR so I don't have to get up at 3AM to watch.
12914200, see...the torrents is where I have to fall back. fck around & get
Posted by FLUIDJ, Wed Oct-21-15 10:09 AM
caught out there....

"Get ready..for your blessing..."
12914210, you dont seed. ever. its an asshole thing to do but....
Posted by double negative, Wed Oct-21-15 10:12 AM
been torrenting for close to ten years

never has issue

12914216, Technically speaking
Posted by Numba_33, Wed Oct-21-15 10:15 AM
you can still get caught, seeding or no seeding. As long as the torrent you are part of is tracked and watched for by companies you are potentially pirating from, you can get caught.

Apparently you are just fortunate enough not to get caught yet.
12914218, yeah, one email warning from FiOS was enough to scare me off for
Posted by FLUIDJ, Wed Oct-21-15 10:17 AM
good....

My torrent client was set to NEVER seed....
12914674, That's why you mask it with a proxy
Posted by Paps_Smear, Wed Oct-21-15 04:43 PM
So they can't track it back to you

my shit looks like someone overseas downloaded it
12914814, I need to look into that
Posted by spenzalii, Wed Oct-21-15 10:41 PM
I have got an e-mail from Fios twice on that. Likely the items that was downloaded, as I rarely have that issue. But yeah, do it at your own risk
12914906, It would be the best
Posted by Numba_33, Thu Oct-22-15 10:00 AM
if the Tor Project gave away free proxy services ala their Tor Browser, but I suppose they are aware folks would abuse a free proxy service for piracy purposes and would put them in the crosshairs for content providers, so I can see why they wouldn't do such a thing for free.
12914266, Netflix + SlingTV + NBA League Pass + HBO Now
Posted by LeroyBumpkin, Wed Oct-21-15 10:56 AM
With my internet bill, I pay $113/month for all of that.

For my viewing habits, I see no reason in paying for cable.
12915152, Yep... Roku3 + Netflix + SlingTV for me..

I know you're asking about the digital stuff, but FYI you can get all major networks, public access, Spanish channels, and even some nature/Nat Geo type stuff free gratis.

Edit - you can also get a DVR that will record OTA (over the air) channels, standalone subscription-free.

12914494, HD antenna+SlingTV+Netflix+Hulu+Torrents (w/ proxy server)
Posted by Ishwip, Wed Oct-21-15 01:58 PM
I add NBA League Pass around all-star break.

Anyways, me and the gf live in Arizona, top floor of an apartment with no trees or buildings blocking reception and of course AZ has no weather so keep that in mind but for us it's been pretty easy. The antenna was I think $20 to $25. So local stuff is covered.

SlingTV w/ HBO added is $35 monthly. Runs through XBox One, phone, tablet, computer, and I think Roku. It has had some hiccups since launch, but has been a whole lot better the past month or so (there was an app update). Channels are A&E, ABC Family, Adult Swim, AMC, Bloomberg, Cartoon Network, CNN, Disney Channel, El Rey, ESPN, ESPN2, Food Network, GalavisiĆ³n, H2, HGTV, History, IFC, Lifetime, Maker, TBS, TNT, Travel Channel, and as mentioned we added HBO. If you don't add HBO it's $20 a month. No contracts.

Hulu w/ no commercials option is $12; Netflix I believe is $10. Again, both have no contracts so can cancel whenever.

And I pay $30 once every 3 months for a proxy server when I have to get illegal. :)

Posted by placee_22, Wed Oct-21-15 02:06 PM
I just be chillin watching the news on BBC One, just because I can.

The downside is there's just too much to choose from...so sometimes I take more time to settle on something than I do actually watching it.
12914794, What's the Beast?
Posted by Big Kuntry, Wed Oct-21-15 09:06 PM
12914799, a super duper Kodi repository
Posted by placee_22, Wed Oct-21-15 09:23 PM
it's out there on google Kodi + The Beast
12914648, i do sometimes have to restart the FireStick to get beast working
Posted by gumz, Wed Oct-21-15 04:12 PM
not sure what that's about but it's not enough for me to stop using it. i still love that shit.

i should really cancel cable but my wife would never pick up using Beast so it's pointless.
12914650, just fucking do it already.

no complaints here, but shit just seems too good to be true.

Posted by Geah, Fri Oct-23-15 09:37 AM
u can do the shit yourself. One goes down another pops up...
12916025, not exactly. i'm not 100% of the logistics/legalities
Posted by Playa_Politician, Fri Oct-23-15 08:22 PM
but Kodi is open source if i'm not mistaken (i probably am) and folks can write their own apps for it.

what most of these apps do is they aggregate (is that the right word?) a bunch of streaming URLs so they're not really hosting anything. similar to napster i guess but the issue isn't Kodi's it's the app developers who continue to write the apps and maintain them. one app may go down then another will pop up (think popcorn time) in it's place.

So kodi itself won't get taken down, but the plug-ins people use may very well stop working.

plus the plug-ins that bootleg movies are not offical kodi apps, you have go out of your way (not really that hard tho) to install those repos.
12915110, Netflix and a NAS unit is how you ditch cable.
Posted by Kira, Thu Oct-22-15 12:51 PM
Why shouldn't Kodi be legal? If I pay for a NAS unit and want to "backup" the movies I legally purchased digitally then why can't I do it?

I have a media server with thousands of "legally purchased" dvds over the years that I watch. I can stream from my tablet, notebook, smartphone any time I want, anywhere I want.
12915299, you did it successfully!?

They asked if I knew how to do it.
I didn't even feel like using my time home to mess around with it so I told them I do it for $200 just so they don't bother me anymore.

Dude comes back from his lunch break with one he copped from best buy and gave me the money and told him to hook him up. Easy money.
