I don't think a lot of older heads realize just how prevalent Hip Hop is in WORLD culture let alone American Culture.

I saw a meme of Drake's dance moves to a Bachata song before I actually saw the video..

shit was golden.
12913741, RE: No post about the Hotline Bling official video?
Posted by double 0, Tue Oct-20-15 11:05 AM
It's weird that DRAM waited until now to comment on the Cha Cha - Hotline Bling similarities..

12913856, Nah he's commented a couple times before in interviews
Posted by Hitokiri, Tue Oct-20-15 01:27 PM
Said he was flattered.
Seems like he's just now starting to show his annoyance with it, though.
12913862, RE: Nah he's commented a couple times before in interviews
Posted by double 0, Tue Oct-20-15 01:34 PM
Ah ok...

Guess it would be annoying since that shit for sure about to be #1.. and Drake's highest charting single ever
12913867, I wasn't mad at Drake's take on Cha-Cha at first
Posted by Hitokiri, Tue Oct-20-15 01:38 PM
when it seemed like he just made it having fun as a throwaway...
But now that he's running with it as a single, I think it's kinda fucked up how he jacked DRAM's shit and has overshadowed him.
12913884, RE: I wasn't mad at Drake's take on Cha-Cha at first
Posted by double 0, Tue Oct-20-15 02:09 PM
Here is what's weird...

The samples arent the same.. beat isn't the same.. subject matter isn't the same...

It feels influenced (and beat melody is close) and he kinda alluded to it in those new Fader comments.. but shit is a different song

When it dropped I knew it was a hit.. immediately.. it only felt like a throwaway because of the meek beef and peoples focus on that.. but shit was a hit from day uno
12914053, ok I ain't trippin
Posted by astralblak, Tue Oct-20-15 11:42 PM
.
12915054, RE: ok I ain't trippin
Posted by double 0, Thu Oct-22-15 12:15 PM
yea I actually dont get it...

So he heard the song.. was inspired.. then commissioned a nineteen85 to make a beat that IS also a sample but NOT the same sample? When he could have asked Gabe for the instrumental?

Or did the success of the song simply show him he COULD drop a song that sounded similar and it would work..
12914912, Drakes been doing that his whole career
Posted by Boogie Stimuli, Thu Oct-22-15 10:09 AM
sing-rapping
#hashtag flow
no-new-friends concept
etc
He takes things other ppl do and runs with them.
He's big on the tried and true method but wants to be perceived as innovative.
Now that he's in a position to strike immediately, he can just take a less famous
guy's idea and make it appear to be his.
12915170, RE: Drakes been doing that his whole career
Posted by double 0, Thu Oct-22-15 01:44 PM
Maybe you dont get what I am saying...

Other than similar sample melodies and timing of release... these songs have nothing in common...

12915443, RE: Drakes been doing that his whole career
Posted by Boogie Stimuli, Fri Oct-23-15 12:02 AM
What you're saying is simple

Drake used "Cha Cha" as the inspiration for this song... that much is very apparent.
Sure, that's very common in music... but when you have a song that's very much
outside the run-of-the-mill cookie-cutter norm like "Cha Cha", that "inspiration" is
that much more apparent ESPECIALLY when the name of the song is "Cha Cha" and
you in the video doing latin dances with a Rico Huxtable swag.
Bottom line is he took the formula DRAM was using to make a lil name for himself
and stole his thunder because he's in a position to do so.
12913765, RE: No post about the Hotline Bling official video?
Posted by cloak323, Tue Oct-20-15 11:41 AM
He's not bad, but I get the impression that him moving to a groove doesn't come naturally.
12913788, Drake being relatable again. He even dances like the everyman
Posted by PimpTrickGangstaClik, Tue Oct-20-15 12:15 PM
If the mood strikes me, I hit moves just like that. That slow bop. The hip shuffle. The awkward footwork. All of that
12913792, i'm just here for the fatty's
Posted by Big Kuntry, Tue Oct-20-15 12:18 PM
12913869, How is this Drake's biggest song to date?
Posted by Buddy_Gilapagos, Tue Oct-20-15 01:42 PM
And I don't mean to judge the song on the merits because I like it alot. It just seems odd because it seems like a throw away track between trying to come up with something to get at Meek Mills. (again, not judging the merits of the song but it sounds like they probably spent 20 minutes on it f'ing around with a very well known sample).

And didn't they just drop the song on his sound cloud?

Dude really got it like that when his mixtape cuts just blow up like this.

Any strong Drake track will make its way from soundcloud to radio

Only other artist who can do that is T Swift.

Posted by bearfield, Tue Oct-20-15 02:15 PM
the not-quite cold and minimalist design contrasts and therefore complements the very human elements of drake dancing awkwardly and beautiful voluptuous women. great stuff. apparently noted art guy james turrell's installations were the inspiration for the look of the video
12913912, IMO one of the best videos visually i've seen in ages
