12893034, What percentage of music you listen to is Hip-Hop?
Posted by Buddy_Gilapagos, Wed Dec-31-69 07:00 PM
Since I got into hip-hop this is probably the lowest point for me as far as listening to hip-hop.

To be fair, I probably listen to less music then general and when I do it usually has to be kid friendly (I wanted to check out that new Rick Ross mixtape but haven't had the time alone to do).

Anyway, anyone else falling off on listening to hip-hop music like they use to?

Poll question: What percentage of music you listen to is Hip-Hop?

Poll result (42 votes)
100% (nothing but hip-hop) (1 votes)Vote
75% - 99% (mostly hip-hop) (12 votes)Vote
roughly 50% (about half hip-hop) (19 votes)Vote
around 25% (mostly not hip-hop but some) (7 votes)Vote
0% (no hip-hop) (3 votes)Vote

Every now and then I'll throw on Black Star or Common or Wu-Tang, but that's about it.
12893039, less than 50%. And of that amount, it's about 3-4 different artists tops....
Posted by FLUIDJ, Tue Sep-08-15 09:20 AM
and that Rick Ross...don't fall for the OKPdoke....it's standard Ross fare...nothing groundbreaking or exceptional about it... typical misogyny, braggadocio, n!gga this & n!gga that....yada yada yada...

WHY we continue to feed off of some clowns going on for 10+ tracks about how he's better than me, gonna "fck my b!tch", take my money, kill me, keep me from reaching his level, kill me, hurt me, etc...etc.. etc... is beyond me. I think i'm about ready to step off this hip hop train for good honestly. Even the "good rap" has too many bad elements for my taste.
12893074, I enjoy Rick Ross for what it is. Dope beats and fantasy.
Posted by Buddy_Gilapagos, Tue Sep-08-15 10:08 AM
I compare it to watching Goodfellas or Scarface.

I think his rise is particularly funny because we all know that he is clearly not what he raps about.

I listen to about 50% hip hop these days and about 25% if it is fantasy rap.

some people take this content way too serious... then they turn around and watch a show or movie with people being killed and think nothing of it.
12893041, mostly.
Posted by atruhead, Tue Sep-08-15 09:21 AM
but a lot of it isnt what the masses are into
12893053, i've been feeling too old for hip hop in the past few years.
Posted by double negative, Tue Sep-08-15 09:32 AM
i cant relate to the lyrics anymore.

i mean

there is some stuff that is universal but the whole

"look at me, look at what I got, you ain't shit because you don't have what I got and because you aint shit because you don't have what I got you are mad and that makes you a hater and haters are weak.....you know what? I am also going to fuck your girl"

style of rap just feels so stale if you've made it past a point in life.
12893059, yellow my funk and soul records have better playback
Posted by soken, Tue Sep-08-15 09:44 AM
and international music really is poppin to me
12893061, about half, but its 99% oldschool hiphop...no new stuff too tuff
Posted by mikediggz, Tue Sep-08-15 09:45 AM
12893062, DOOM and Dipset were the only rappers I've made any time

for since about 2000.

Anything else I hear is just whatever is playing on the radio when I'm getting ready in the morning or driving.
12893064, It varies. This year has me listening to more hip-hop than I have in the past few
Posted by Hitokiri, Tue Sep-08-15 09:53 AM
So right now... probably 75%
Last year probably 25%
12893069, i would say about half.
Posted by SHAstayhighalways, Tue Sep-08-15 09:58 AM
12893083, Green...then other 50% is split amongst several other genres
Posted by gumz, Tue Sep-08-15 10:22 AM
12893085, I still listen to mostly hip hop.
Posted by tariqhu, Tue Sep-08-15 10:23 AM
its generally not the newest of the new tho. like you, I do listen less to music overall. basically on my way to/from work or while working out. can't listen at the house like I use to. sometimes streaming from amazon or google while working......if I'm not on the phone with clients.
12893087, since Sean Price passed it's gone up a lot, but I would say 30%

12893190, 62.7% Hip Hop
Posted by -DJ R-Tistic-, Tue Sep-08-15 11:35 AM
12893204, 25% or more but very little new hip-hop
Posted by bigkarma, Tue Sep-08-15 11:44 AM
Either I've aged out, current hip-hop sucks or both. The only stuff I find listenable is the more "okayplayery" stuff; more alternative or retro styles. Anything being played on mainstream radio or the video channels can basically eat a dick.

I still listen to the stuff I love a ton.

12893515, Maybe a third, some new stuff, too.
Posted by ConcreteCharlie, Tue Sep-08-15 07:14 PM
12893523, if we count music released in the last 10 years, then I'm round 10%
Posted by Lach, Tue Sep-08-15 07:48 PM
Cuz most of the hiphop I do listen to is old or by artists who've been around 20 plus years.
12893582, about 60% or so.
Posted by Cold Truth, Tue Sep-08-15 10:08 PM
I listen to hip hop more than anything else on the whole but I binge listen to different shit. I just spent the last week going through the entire Deftones and Incubus catalog after getting to see both live for the first time last Sunday.

Somehow that lead to (finally) jumping on Chevelle's catalog, which I've never heard despite being a big fan of Wonder What's Next. Then I jumped back to Nas.
12893588, Voted blue

I want to balance it out more by listening to jazz or R&B or EDM. Maybe some rock. Hope to get it to under 50%.
12893715, Green. Though its more like 60%

It happens. You get older and the content just isn't for you anymore. i check hip hop mainly for production these days. There are a few emcees I dig (Lupe, Kendrick, etc) but for the most part its the production. I'm not a Future fan but I dig the mood/vibe of DS2. Same with Travis Scott's Rodeo album. Dude is a horrible rapper but he has a good ear for beats. Rap is solo music for me though. Not often do I get to listen to it because I have my 2 daughters with me most times.
12893881, 5%....fuck I look like listening to hip hip a lot?
Posted by rdhull, Wed Sep-09-15 01:46 PM
12894052, you'd look like someone who'd say...."fuck I look like"

12894037, So far, I'm the 1st and only red
Posted by MeshaMeesh, Wed Sep-09-15 09:31 PM
And that's because my OG buddy gave me a bunch of classic stuff last week, and that's all I've been listening to. He was born in 77 and I'm in 94. So I'm in my "stuck in the 90s" phase lol.

Lord Finesse
LL
Rakim
Cappadonna
DITC

Yet... before that, I was listening to strictly boom bap, just for the knowledge; just to get more albums under my belt.

And before that, I was in a DEEP neo-soul phase. It took me 3 weeks to move on from Baduizm to something else.

For hip hop, I prefer mostly older acts, but I like some modern stuff like Mick Jenkins, Jozif Badmon, K.Dot, Cole, KRIT, Skyzoo, Rapsody, etc. Nothing too "Trappy/poppy/edmy" because I can't stand it. I don't consider these artists "underground", but they're not as ... you know. They have something to say with their music.

And the rest of my library is a mixture of classic rock, and a tiny bit of pop/r&b. But I haven't listened to that stuff in months.

music hit you all at once, like that.

I definitely enjoyed living through it, but having right in front of you in its entirety must be overwhelming, in a good way.
12894049, EXACTLYYYY!!!!
Posted by MeshaMeesh, Wed Sep-09-15 09:54 PM
It's such an exhilarating feeling... I have decades worth of music that I can just shuffle thru at any moment. I do wish I were able to live thru that time, so I can have that feeling of "oh I can't wait until this drops, but in the meantime, lemme cop the 12" or the cassette single" lmao! But yeah. I can definitely dig this too.
