12867912, what goes into the answer of the "Where You From" question?
Posted by BigJazz, Thu Jul-30-15 04:16 PM
this doesn't apply to the person that spends their entire life in the same place.

it's for the people that move around during various stages of your life.

does where you're born matter? is it the place where you spent the most years? or the place where you came of age and had your formidable years?

also, if you're from a town right next to a large city, do you tell people you're from that town or from that nearest big city?

where you from?

i'm from Chicago.

i didn't grow up here but i've lived here for nearly 21 yrs. that means i've lived here longer than i lived in any of the places where i grew up. it also means living in Chicago has shaped me more than any of the places where i grew up. so to make it simple when ppl ask i say i'm from Chicago. if they care i'll follow-up explaining that i grew up in STL and the Bay Area. if they ask where in STL i tell them the name of the 2 suburbs where i lived. if they ask where in the Bay Area i tell them the name of the suburb i lived in. of course, i wasn't born in any of these places but no one cares where i was born.
12867928, ^^ this is it for me too! I say LA &/or KC. Or I just say "a lot of places".
Posted by SuiteLady, Thu Jul-30-15 04:30 PM
I was born in the Bay Area, but my mother moved me to KC just before I started kindergarten. My father remained in the Bay and I spent time there during summers and holidays growing up but, my primary residence form 4-18 was KC. I stayed there until I was 18 when I moved to LA. My years in LA were my formidable years. Meaning those years shaped more of who I am today than any of the other places I have lived. I moved back to the Bay Area for 1 year of my adult life, then back to KC for 3 years and now I am in STL. I'm a gypsy so it is always a hard question for me to answer. I look forward to hearing what others have to say. I have actually had people argue with me about where "I'm" from.
12868022, wait a minute.. where were you born?

maybe care ain't accurate but I am curious now.

12868060, lol
Posted by SoWhat, Thu Jul-30-15 06:48 PM
i was not born in Kenya - that was my attempt at an Obama/birther joke.

no offense, but i'm not going to reveal my birthplace. b/c i've used it as my answer to too many security questions.
12867920, For me, it's where grew up, unless I'm on vacation,
Posted by John Forte, Thu Jul-30-15 04:23 PM
then, it's where I live. Bartender in Mexico or stripper in Vegas says "Where are you from?" I'm going to say Pittsburgh, not NYC.

I generally say New York, Although I've had New Yorkers tell me I wasn't from NY. I was born in Richmond, but I went to elementary schools, JHS, part of HS in NY (lived with my dad in VA for 2 years), and moved back for college.
12867921, Ova East
Posted by ambient1, Thu Jul-30-15 04:25 PM
lived in the city my whole life

spent @ 33 years ova east ...a few ova west
hence the distinction

if asked by someone from ova east...
i ring off the 2-3 general areas i've lived (out such n such....round so n so...off a blankety blank)

if asked by a non-resident or when out of town...
i just say Baltimore....i've never said Maryland
12867922, depends on who's asking.
Posted by SHAstayhighalways, Thu Jul-30-15 04:26 PM
if its somebody from rockland i just tell them spring valley.
if its somebody from nyc i just tell them from queens.
if its somebody from outside of new york i just say new york or queens.

i usually wind up explaining further if i communicate with the person more than once
but that's about it.
12867927, im from the bottom... pause... but now im here

12867969, Virginia, unless I'm on vacation, then it's Arizona
Posted by Ishwip, Thu Jul-30-15 05:14 PM
I was born in England and lived there along with a gang of other places, but VA is where I consider home. My mum is still there and it's where I lived 84-90, then 2007 to 2012, so it claims the most of my 33 years so far.

I've lived in Arizona for 3.5 years now, though, so if I'm on a trip/vacation somewhere and I'm asked where am I from, I go with Phoenix.

12867972, If someone has lived in New York for more than three months,
Posted by -DJ R-Tistic-, Thu Jul-30-15 05:18 PM
they almost always claim that. Even if it was when they were 4 months old.
12867988, Lmao nm.

12867999, when i lived in north carolina for a while
Posted by SHAstayhighalways, Thu Jul-30-15 05:44 PM
i ran into that a few times.
people whose parents were from new york or they were born there but left when they were mad young would claim it hard lol
i thought it was really interesting.
it was even to the point of feigning a ny accent for one of the dudes i met
12868025, Man. I saw it SO MUCH in Florida. For whatever reason, a whole lot
Posted by -DJ R-Tistic-, Thu Jul-30-15 06:09 PM
of folks parents moved to Florida. And you damn right, so many feigned accents for reaaaaal!! And even fashion, they'd wear shit that was 2-3 years behind what NY was really doing.
12868271, Especially Lauderdale niggas
Posted by atruhead, Fri Jul-31-15 07:33 AM
nigga had on a short sleeve orange Fubu jersey that said Harlem and I automatically knew he was from Florida
12868359, I have yet to claim it like that.
Posted by StephBMore, Fri Jul-31-15 09:22 AM
12867997, Just tell your story
Posted by Boogie Stimuli, Thu Jul-30-15 05:41 PM
Niggas' social skills can't be this bad

example:

Q. Where are you from?

A. Well I was born in Las Vegas, but I currently live in Portland and spent most of my
life in Detroit. I'm more inclined to say I'm "from" Detroit, despite originating in Las Vegas.

Add your own spin. Make a joke.

etc.

It doesn't have to be complicated
12868005, I lived in NJ til I was 22
Posted by sectachrome86, Thu Jul-30-15 05:52 PM
I've been in CO for over 5 years but I say I'm from NJ if someone here asks me. If someone asks where you're from when I'm on vacation or something, I do say CO, but I kind of cringe because I still identify with the east coast culture much more than CO.

To clarify a more specific area, I would say South Jersey or "close to Philly". Claiming a city when you're not really from there is corny. Plus, you could run into someone who's like "Oh wow, I'm from South Philly! What part are you from?" and then you gotta be like "Oh actually I'm from Jersey."
12868065, I was born in Inglewood, but I don't claim that shit, cuz.
Posted by IkeMoses, Thu Jul-30-15 06:50 PM
12868070, You got any RELATIVEZ still in Inglewood????
Posted by -DJ R-Tistic-, Thu Jul-30-15 07:08 PM
12868071, I am from VA, even though I have lived in NJ/NY for a longer period
Posted by Buddy_Gilapagos, Thu Jul-30-15 07:08 PM
of time.

I mean the question is where you from not where you at right?

On vacay I might say NYC though.

Bklyn (Crown Heights/Bedstuy) & Q-Boro (Far Rock/ Rosedale).
12868264, One of two options...
Posted by Marbles, Fri Jul-31-15 07:23 AM

I've grew up in Ohio (25 years) but I've lived in Florida for the past 10. If I'm in Tampa and people ask where I'm from, I say I grew up in Ohio. If I'm in any other city and people ask where I'm from, I usually say Tampa.

12868269, Whatever you consider important.
Posted by TheAlbionist, Fri Jul-31-15 07:32 AM
For me I don't consider the first 10 years that important/molding so rarely mention I ever had ties to East England... my parents moved us to the sticks outside Bristol when I was 10 and that's where I became a person, so I normally say I'm from Bristol but have lived in London for most of my adult life.
12868273, I always say New York and I mention living in Philly 6 years
Posted by atruhead, Fri Jul-31-15 07:36 AM
and I feel the need to justify it with "my parents are still there and everything", ESPECIALLY to New Yorkers who will try to press the issue when you're out of town (thinking you're a fraud)

or I'll make a super New York reference that you would have to be from there to get
12868297, i will always claim houston.
Posted by Binlahab, Fri Jul-31-15 08:21 AM
havent lived there since 2pac was alive but it will always be home

12868324, Depends on the context of the question.
Posted by Teknontheou, Fri Jul-31-15 08:55 AM
As an example, if I'm at a convention for my industry with people from all around the country, and someone asks where I'm from, I know they really are asking where do I live now, which is Brooklyn.

But if I'm talking to a woman at a speed dating event or cookout or something about deep life matters, they are often more likely to be asking about my origins, which is Philly, which is how I'll answer.
12868327, i grew up in Hampton but have lived in Richmond 12+ years
Posted by KiloMcG, Fri Jul-31-15 08:57 AM
so it's home now.

that's generally my answer.
12868360, *rap hands*

"Get ready..for your blessing..."
12868364, "Originally from Richmond VA"...
Posted by StephBMore, Fri Jul-31-15 09:25 AM
but when I'm outside of the US, and ppl ask I say I live in NY. because i"m assuming they are asking where I live now when they say where are you from
12868378, when i get asked this
Posted by BabySoulRebel, Fri Jul-31-15 09:31 AM
it's usually because they want to know what nationality/ethnicity I am.
I say Colombian in that case
12868379, Donaldsonville, LA*
Posted by placee_22, Fri Jul-31-15 09:32 AM
I almost always have to explain that it's between Baton Rouge & New Orleans.

I once met Mary Landrieu (our then US Senator) when I was working in DC and told her where I was from and she looked at me like I was crazy until I explained where it was, then she kind of remembered.
12868497, Where I'm from or where do I live?
Posted by Mack, Fri Jul-31-15 10:43 AM
I'll always be from Erie, PA.
12868514, I usually just say my mom's vagina.
Posted by Mongo, Fri Jul-31-15 10:53 AM
That tends to end the conversation.
12868524, I say East Flatbush Brooklyn because I was born there
Posted by c71, Fri Jul-31-15 11:00 AM
and I finished grade school there and all junior high school and 1 year of high school (10th grade).

I spent some of my childhood and more years overall in Jamaica Queens so it's a bit of a competition there.

But there was just too much richness in Brooklyn in those grade school to 10th grade years for any other answer.
