12861324, when did you stop being excited about your birthday?
Posted by SoWhat, Thu Jul-23-15 08:12 AM
assuming you were once excited about it and no longer are excited. when did the change happen?

this will be the 2nd year i'm non-plussed about mine. i dunno if it's a permanent change or just a thing i'm going through now.

My daughter (11) is always excited so that keeps me somewhat excited I guess. She made me a slightly burnt cake last year. It was cute though.
12861349, Early 30s...
Posted by Marbles, Thu Jul-23-15 08:34 AM

For me, they all kind of ran together. I get excited because me & the lady may take a little trip or go to a cool restaurant or something. And she even threw a big party for me around 35-36. But birthdays aren't that big of a deal to me anymore. I turned 40 last year and she asked what I wanted to do. I told her nothing. Let's do a little bar crawl together and hit that new restaurant. And that was it.
12861351, i was only ever excited about it during college.
Posted by BrooklynWHAT, Thu Jul-23-15 08:35 AM
12861354, 17 or 18. Around the same time I lost interest in X-mas gifts.
Posted by Teknontheou, Thu Jul-23-15 08:38 AM
And it's gotten me in trouble with other people because I forget to make a big deal about their birthdays either.
12861365, motherfucking never
Posted by MrThomas43423, Thu Jul-23-15 08:46 AM
and no...i'm not following instructions.

but growing up my birthday was never a big deal. i'd get a gift or two...we maybe did dinner. but i think i had one party. so i never mad a big deal of it. then i got to college and one of my boys was like...you better celebrate. that's your day. and he's right.

you share holidays if you even believe in them. i mean technically...Christmas is for the Christians and Veteran's Day is for the veterans. Columbus Day and Thanksgiving are for oppressors. Memorial Day is for dead people. you really never get a day.

so i've grown to love my birthday. sometimes i buy a new suit just for the occasion, and 99% of the time i won't be at work. my birthday is on a Wed this year. ain't shit gonna be going on, but i guarantee you i won't be at work. i love myself and that's the most important day of the year. followed by Thanksgiving. i love Thanksgiving even tho the reason we celebrate it is some bullshit.

Posted by legsdiamond, Thu Jul-23-15 08:59 AM
so maybe I will take Friday off or Monday off.

I never knew that was a thing until OKP.

For years I shrugged off my bday but an older lady at Walmart was like CELEBRATE that shit, life is too short, be happy for making it through another year.

12861406, real talk. cause a lot of folks don't make it.

Posted by SHAstayhighalways, Thu Jul-23-15 09:49 AM
my birthday always falls around memorial day and sometimes ON memorial day (may 29th)
after i had a party at sport-o-rama that barely anyone showed up to i learned to not get too hype for my bday
i had to realize most people have obligations centered around family and bbqs around that time

i mean i have a good time on my birthday most years
but i don't get crazy excited or anything
if stuff happens, great
if nothing happens, cool.

i've had some really great birthdays though
my expectations are just really low

Posted by bearfield, Thu Jul-23-15 11:59 AM
my birthday is on christmas eve. it would always get lost in the holidays. i'd often get 1-for-2 presents ("it's for birthday and christmas!"), which was very disappointing when i was a kid. getting friends together for a proper party around that time was nearly impossible so i usually had to have my "birthday" celebration some time in the summer or fall. those parties always rang false to me so i stopped having them after the 2nd or 3rd one

i absolutely hated my birthday from ~22-32 years old. i guess that's still technically caring about it... my goal then was to try to sleep or self-medicate my way through it. i got pretty good at doing that. i don't hate it anymore but my preference is to have the day pass without incident and minimal acknowledgement of it. i'm more interested in being able to hang out with my family on christmas
