12854508, What's the oldest hip-hop song that knocks like it dropped yesterday?
Posted by Buddy_Gilapagos, Wed Jul-15-15 02:17 PM
That is, if this joint was dropped today it would be a hit.

I am going to go with Guess who's back ft. Jay-Z, Beanie & Scarface.

That seems like a safe bet (though the track is over a decade old) but if I were being more daring I'd go with the Beastie Boys The New Style which is almost 30 years old.

Not sure if this is just another way of asking what's your favorite song so I am curious to hear what people say.

I guess there was also no need to limit this to hip-hop. I guess the point is it should be uptempo. Non-Hip-hop I'd say "I can't wait" or "Erotic City". BTW, doesn't that Tove Lo - Talking Body song remind you of Erotic City? but yeah.

I had watched some movie on hbo then started cleaning up and never changed the channel. Im doing dishes and I hear the beat. I was like wtf. I was totally expecting that some new rapper sampled it. No way Tried by 12 made it into this movie. Then the verse dropped. I jumped online and tweeted about it. This was like 2 months ago. Well cut to Saturday and my wife is watching TV. I just got out the shower. Our bathroom doesnt have a door from our bedroom. Just a short hallway. I hear the beat and run into the room like WTF! Then I see the scene and it comes back to me. Shit throws me off every time. Just like the DJ Shadow Chevy commercial.

This reminds me when I was at the thompson hotel and Denzel came in dressed like he was for the Maywhether/Pacquiao fight. Dude came in and made the DJ play all this old school Hip-Hop like Sucker MC and just totally killed the vibe of the joint. And that was like 7-8 years ago.

I was in High School when Strictly Business dropped. EVERYBODY knew the lyrics to "Strictly Business" and "You Got's To Chill", we were tryng to dance like Stezo in the "You Gots To Chill" video, and IIRC "You're A Customer" was talked about the next day at school

EPMD's second album was already a blind buy for most people, but once we saw the video to "So What You Sayin" it was a blind buy for pretty much everyone.

to take all these songs to a teenage focus group and tell them they're new songs and have them rate the songs. somebody is going to steal this idea...probably complex...HI!

probably.
12855407, Yea 95% of these wouldn't at all work as "new" singles. Now, if J. Cole
Posted by -DJ R-Tistic-, Thu Jul-16-15 11:16 AM
or Kendrick or whoever took some of these exact same beats to make a new song, sure it might blow up. But even then, it would be seen as a throwback track. Only a few would sound anything near modern.

wayyyyyy ahead of their time. No way you can tell me that song wouldn't knock in the clubs right today if it was released.

Other nominees off the top of my ahead:

Outkast - Elevators and ATLiens just bc they're so out there and infectious that they could fit in any time period imo...Plus, any time I introduce/suggest Outkast to someone younger they end up loving them.

Jay Z/Mya - Best of Me remix

Lauryn Hill - Doo Wop ...the song is timeless

Onyx - Throw Your Gunz ...I heard this the other day for the first time in awhile. Song gets you so hype.

Eightball and MJG - Pimp Hard

I might be stretching it here, but BDP - 9 MM Go Bang still knocks hard to me.
