12853245, i fail to understand the appeal of the Italian beef sandwich.
Posted by SoWhat, Tue Jul-14-15 01:20 PM
it's a Chicago thing (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Italian_beef). i've been here for 20 yrs and have only eaten no more than 3 or maybe 4. i just had one for lunch and found it boring and somewhat absurd. it's literally just sliced roast beef on a white bread bun. i had mine dipped and had some giandiniera on the side which i added on top. it was still an absurdly boring sandwich. it needs some spices, veggies, cheese, condiments...you know, sandwich stuff. i ended up adding some spicy brown mustard just so i could eat the thing.

if you've had the sandwich and enjoyed it, what do you like about it?
12853256, like all things chicago, its just a failed version of the philly cheese steak
Posted by ShinobiShaw, Tue Jul-14-15 01:26 PM
just like that lasagna pizza and that bastard hot dog

*pop locks into a fighting stance*

Don't u got a beard to groom or something?

But real talk, what u saying is side-eye worthy....
12853257, All it needs is giardiniera
Posted by John Forte, Tue Jul-14-15 01:27 PM
12853276, i've always had giadiniera on my IB sammiches.
Posted by SoWhat, Tue Jul-14-15 01:33 PM
and they're still pretty boring.

but i'm remembering one i had from Al's Beef that was pretty tasty. and the giardinniauraa on that one was better than what i had today.

so alright..the guardinuora makes a difference.
12853268, Eh, I had one this weekend that was good as hell... mmm
Posted by ThisIs_ATruthThang, Tue Jul-14-15 01:30 PM
I got it from the local spot around my aunt's house. I got mine with sweet peppers, dipped. I literally inhaled that damn thing like a cone head. lol

Maybe you just not going to the right spots. Portillo's is decent, I've gotten one there with grilled veggies, or with marinara and mozzarella. Still slamming.
12853279, i've been to the best - Al's Beef.
Posted by SoWhat, Tue Jul-14-15 01:34 PM
the originator, even. theirs was good but still kinda boring. it was better than the one i had today.
12853273, the soggy ass bread doesn't appeal to me.

12853281, never had one *in* chicago but i thought cheese was standard
Posted by cgonz00cc, Tue Jul-14-15 01:34 PM
12853284, NOOOOOOOOO
Posted by John Forte, Tue Jul-14-15 01:35 PM
12853289, cheese is usually available
Posted by SoWhat, Tue Jul-14-15 01:39 PM
but it's not exactly standard.

and the sammich is better w/cheese.
12853291, you're trolling now
Posted by John Forte, Tue Jul-14-15 01:40 PM
12853332, we eat 'em w/cheese sometimes.
Posted by SoWhat, Tue Jul-14-15 01:53 PM
*shrugs*
12853292, Would it be better with a side of au jus?
Posted by Marbles, Tue Jul-14-15 01:40 PM

Or would that just make it the exact same thing as a French Dip?
12853342, IMO it's best dipped.
Posted by SoWhat, Tue Jul-14-15 01:55 PM
but that makes for a messy eating experience. the au jus can be ordered on the side so one can dip as one eats.

sure, the sandwich is better that way - but it's still just a plain roast beef sandwich on white bread.
12853295, I'm not a fan at all.
Posted by PoppaGeorge, Tue Jul-14-15 01:42 PM
for pretty much the same reasons: boring, bland, not enough of anything happening.

My cousin swore by Italian beef sandwiches. any time I was in Chicago he was always trying to shove one in my face.

Now a good Italian sausage sandwich??? FUCK YEAH!!! There's a spot up in Saginaw, MI called Tony's that makes one of the best Italian sausage sandwiches I've ever had.

Italian beef w/Italian sausage. i had one of those once and somehow i'm not dead. i knew right then as i ate it that i can't live here forever.
12853561, never had them both, to me that was like sacrilege
Posted by PoppaGeorge, Tue Jul-14-15 03:32 PM
like, how you gonna taint the holy goodness that is Italian sausage with the devil's excrement known as Italian beef?

I've had several garbage versions of your precious sandwich
12853357, do they have have muffuletta in Memphis or is that an N.O. thing only?
Posted by ConcreteCharlie, Tue Jul-14-15 01:58 PM
12853368, you're not missing anything.
Posted by SoWhat, Tue Jul-14-15 02:00 PM
the sandwich isn't much better here than it is there.

there's no mystery to it - slice roast beef put it on a white bread roll and dip it in au jus or don't. include those oily peppers if wanted. that can be done anywhere in the world. there's nothing special going on.
12853345, I don't get it either, most of them are like Arby's Cheesesteaks
Posted by ConcreteCharlie, Tue Jul-14-15 01:56 PM
I had one once in Chicago that was pretty good, they seasoned the beef and it had some sort of au jus type thing on it and that nice little Italian salad.

Overall it's just some dry beef on a white roll.

Now Muffuletta, that I fucks with, and of course cheesesteaks and all sorts of varieties of hoagies.
12853353, I like it.
Posted by Mongo, Tue Jul-14-15 01:58 PM
12853509, is it any different then a french dip?

but i do NOT enjoy soggy bread.
12853599, i always do b/c i can't swallow the dry sandwich.
Posted by SoWhat, Tue Jul-14-15 04:01 PM
if it's dry then i want cheese on it. which seems wrong but is allowed.
12857284, Makes sense
Posted by lfresh, Sun Jul-19-15 11:14 AM
>if it's dry then i want cheese on it. which seems wrong but
>is allowed.

Most sandwiches should have cheese
And an equal amount
Not a sliver then a pile of meat

This doesn't sound appetizing btw at all
Also not a fan of soggy bread

I really like Italian Beefs, but I prefer (for some of the reasons you list above) the philly steak.
12853786, Even JSun knows the cheesesteak is better.
Posted by SoWhat, Tue Jul-14-15 07:33 PM
ESPECIALLY him. Lol
12857145, 2005 JSun is all about Al's Beef.

Posted by murph71, Sat Jul-18-15 10:01 AM
When I ate cow back in the day (I'm chicken, fish and turkey now) I was addicted to Italian beef sandwiches...

It was all about the bread, the peppers and the dip.....Fred & Jacks on 76th st. was MY shit...And Al's was worth the hype....

But the best Italian beefs I've had have been on the North side....

Basically, I.B. sandwiches are not overrated if u go to the right spots....
12857104, i never had one but i don't understand this idea that
Posted by SHAstayhighalways, Sat Jul-18-15 03:50 PM
one shouldn't put whatever the hell they want on a sandwich
sure it could start off with whatever ingredients that makes it whatever it is
but i wish a nigga would tell me i shouldn't put xyz on a sandwich for fear that it takes away from its 'authenticity'
if i don't like it the way its 'supposed' to be please believe i will add to it to make it enjoyable to myself.
if i need to add cheese i will add motherfucking cheese.
