12848939, What's the longest break you've taken from posting on #thissite?

...And what brought you back?

It's been three+ years for me and I was reminded recently how great some of ya'll are. I've lurked occasionally, but I've missed a lot I'm sure. I've always held this site in high esteem for entertainment and good conversation (when it can be had between poasts) so it feels great to participate again after a long hiatus.

Poll question: What's the longest break you've taken from posting on #thissite?

Your perspective is lacking around here.
And the rest of you former posters reading this, I'm talking to you too.
Most of you.
12848981, Thanks, man.

From the little bits I've been able to glean from posts here and there... I've actually found myself pleasantly surprised by the contributions of posters who I recognize and remember as not really being the usual suspects on either side of hot button issues.

A lot of folks seem to have grown, shifted towards center from what I remember.

12848978, Oh shit! Peace, I was just wondering where you went.

12848982, i been here since late '99 and my longest time away was like
Posted by BigJazz, Wed Jul-08-15 07:25 PM
2 years.

that's no lurking or nothing. straight gone. nothing prompted it, i just had other shit on my mind and this place was off my radar.

and i came back cuz one day i heard some "news" that didn't sound true so i came here to verify. cuz page 1 of GD is always the spot to verify news.

then i was back...
12848983, yeah...months to a year for me...
Posted by Seven, Wed Jul-08-15 07:26 PM
....i lurk occasionally during those breaks but I always find myself back..

Now that things on the job front are more settled, it's a decent way to pass the day, when I need to step away from work.
12849016, I leave all the time for months, years...

I thought about you a month or so ago. I wondered if you were still attempting to create the artists colony.

Although now I kind of think there's a possibility that you're an avatar. Are you a real person or someone's alternative okp personality (alias)? It doesn't matter but I thought I'd ask.

I'm happy to see your name pop up in conversation, alias or not.
12849028, Nah. My intentional community hasn't kicked off...

I'm still deep in the research/developmental stage and don't really see fruition occurring until I'm in my 40's... unless I become exceptionally lucky. The earnest desire is still there and I've done (and saved) quite a bit towards my goal since I was on here last... despite that goal changing over time. I might make a post about it in the future.

As for your suspicion, I think I might be one of the few posters here who has never logged in as anything other than my original username. Technology and I already don't mesh very well without the added struggle of me attempting to remember multiple handles and passwords haha.

Has there been any recent pic/video posts? I remember a good time being had by all who participated in those and I participated in most of them...

12849031, Peace Duke, ....long time, no post.

The longest I've gone is just under 6 months, I believe.

12849095, did you ever go live off the grid?
Posted by RobOne4, Wed Jul-08-15 11:34 PM
i assumed that is why you left.
12849101, Briefly, yes. A little over 6 weeks.
Posted by Moonlit_Force, Wed Jul-08-15 11:59 PM
I was alone and it was not nearly at the scale I proposed here, but it was a start and I confirmed for myself that I was capable of living off-grid.

Since then, I've turned my sights on other approaches besides developing raw land, including re-purposing existing infrastructure on urban properties and building up the soil there via permaculture techniques.

As of now, this appears to be the route that will make what I have in mind most attainable in the short run... but there are pretty significant hurdles and compromises that could eclipse the financial benefit of doing it this way too.
12849108, aka Municipal building codes. I feel your pain.

12849110, Word. Really digging down and taking the time...
Posted by Moonlit_Force, Thu Jul-09-15 12:32 AM
...to sift through all the jargon for laws I have the potential to break is both exhausting and hella disheartening lol.
12849111, RE: Word. Really digging and down and taking the time...
Posted by Castro, Thu Jul-09-15 12:39 AM
I want to build some alternative structures as homeless housing and the code stands in the way of that... extremely frustrating.
12849114, I can imagine.
Posted by Moonlit_Force, Thu Jul-09-15 12:51 AM
> extremely frustrating.

Regarding alternative structures, what type of construction method did you have in mind?
12849141, RE: I can imagine.
Posted by Castro, Thu Jul-09-15 03:37 AM
Pallet based structures...easy to gather the pallets, and I wanted to work with local Architecture students (and an established architect friend) to make a modular system that could be moved.
12849102, I've taken a few years off
Posted by PoppaGeorge, Thu Jul-09-15 12:04 AM
I was posting in The Lesson 99% of the time until about 2006 or so. Then I started posting here in GD but always from work. Then one day I went in and this site was being blocked by Webwasher for "Adult Content" or some shit and I stopped coming.

Oddly, I tried hitting here in late 2010 or early 2011 and it was being allowed on the corp network, so I started posting sparingly again.

This is my first post in years.... and prolly my longest break from the boards in the decade and a half I've been on.
12849118, Well, damn. Welcome back :-)
Posted by Moonlit_Force, Thu Jul-09-15 01:06 AM
Maybe there should be periodic post for lurkers to stretch out in every once in while haha?

The few times I lurked on here after leaving... I remember a couple of posts that I really wanted to jump in on, but the most I had time for was to read them and not engage. I missed what were undoubtedly good posts discussing some events that have happened in the last six months, let alone the last three years...

Ive done under a year. UltimatelyI come back because I like to talk anonymous shit. That's all there is to it. Not many places left for that online, especially not with the community of folk like what's developed here.
