12821715, Another controversial Louis CK bit.

1) I gave my feelings on the SNL molestation jokes. no comment from me here, just a link

2) You cant go with "it was 2011" unless he's addressed it since which point, I havent bothered to research it. if this happened in 2015, what are your thoughts?

from the SNL post "I ain't exaggerating when I say we're watching history. Dude is just sitting on the peak of artistry. A complete game-changer. It's impossible to overstate where he's at right now."

so yeah, is this funny?

12821725, I saw it when it aired and it bothered me
Posted by Starks dunked on Bulls, Wed Jun-03-15 05:58 PM
Still bothers me now.

I don't think there can ever be a funny moment where Whites are laughing over the word "Nigga."

Seinfeld took the respectable stance.

Nonetheless, I think that's why I like Louis CK. He's honest and he doesn't mind exposing/exploring his stupidity.
12821727, yeah. I laughed.

12821818, to paraphrase Patrice O'Neal
Posted by Mr. ManC, Wed Jun-03-15 07:59 PM
comedy is off limits. It's the one place where all that is offensive and wrong and edgy and work itself out. Specifically about Louis C.K. he has found mad ways of presenting hot button topics in his stand up and it is high level material.

I'd rather Louis C.K. say nigger than for Mitt Romney call me a "taker", or even himself a "job creator".

we need to get over the things we've been taught to be offended by, or at least reappraise and prioritize them.

12822653, I think that's a very reasonable perspective
Posted by ConcreteCharlie, Thu Jun-04-15 02:30 PM
I am also tired of setting clear limits about what to be offended over, like we are giving guidelines to bigots to avoid trouble and roasting other people who might have much better intentions but express them differently.
12822844, ^^Yup. while people outrage over slurs, this is far more racist
Posted by Mynoriti, Thu Jun-04-15 04:35 PM
>I'd rather Louis C.K. say nigger than for Mitt Romney call me
>a "taker", or even himself a "job creator".
12822862, i agree...but the shit has to be FUNNY.
Posted by SoWhat, Thu Jun-04-15 04:54 PM
if it's not funny it's wildly offensive - and we are right to take offense in that situation.

comedy being subjective there's rarely universal agreement about what's funny vs. offensive.

i understand ppl being offended here and i don't begrudge them. i don't join them b/c i think the shit was funny but i see where they're coming from. and Louie can live w/them being offended, i'm sure. he must get that reaction often.
12823321, i agree with this
Posted by final_prospect82, Fri Jun-05-15 12:21 PM
too often people are caught up being called a nigger vs being treated like a nigger (whether that systemic or whatever)

i look at non blacks using that word in the same vein I hear men refer to women as bitches. I'm not the one who has to carry the weight of what that word brings so it's not on me to say I should be able to say it.

or just like my sis and I can talk about moms but patna better tread lightly

however when non black comedians use it, it does quiet my laughter. especially since it really aint a joke but here Louie is laughing hard as fuck at that.

at the end of the day I'm saying I have room to be offended by systemic racisim as I have for this racism...just a matter of degrees of significance
12821825, he is as game changing as the overuse of the

happen to be a huge fan of Louie CK, I think he's downright brilliant. But something about that particular snippet rubbed me the wrong way

I dunno, maybe it was the all too enthusiastic chuckle of Ricky Gervais or the lil comment about them (Louie and Ricky) saying the word in private or maybe is was Chris Rock's obvious discomfort but feigned nonchalance (as evident by him repeatedly reaching for the cup and taking sips #bodylanguage). I know pushing the envelope is Louie's thing and all, it just that I didn't find this bit really that funny.

and mf's would misunderstand and he would have to explain it later.

That's just them chopping it up.

Chris knows racism. Louis knows racism. And that's not it. That's comedy.
12822027, Rock wasnt cool.... at all
Posted by legsdiamond, Thu Jun-04-15 08:16 AM
he looked uncomfortable as hell that CK would go there ON TV and in front of Jerry of all people.

This is some shit Rock and CK prolly do all the time when alone but you don't pull that shit out in front of company.

12821922, i figured the discomfort came from the B vs N reference.
Posted by SoWhat, Wed Jun-03-15 10:27 PM
Rock retired the bit yrs ago in the wake of controversy brought on by reaction to the bit.
12822034, nah, its saying nigger in front of people who arent > <
Posted by legsdiamond, Thu Jun-04-15 08:22 AM
it like one of your cool lawyer friends talking about an inside joke that uses racial or sexist slant in a public setting.

CK line stepped IMO... he brought up the old joke but he also sent further.

"it's something we say when they arent around"

12822039, that wasn't it.
Posted by SoWhat, Thu Jun-04-15 08:26 AM
Rock has said 'nigger' in front of millions of ppl - many of whom weren't down. he has been in a room when Louis CK and other comedians of all types have said 'nigger' in front of strangers. that was not new for him.

but Louis bringing up that 'Blacks vs Niggers' routine seemed to have made Rock uncomfortable in part b/c Rock doesn't do the bit anymore. and he said that at least twice - that he's retired it. i suspect he might have been trying to avoid being goaded into doing that bit again.

the 'we say it when they're not around' thing was Rock playing along w/Louis' bit once he figured out that he wasn't going to have to perform B vs N.
12822053, Rock said he doesnt say the word nigger anymore
Posted by legsdiamond, Thu Jun-04-15 08:38 AM
it was more than the skit.

when a guy like Jerry does the "why, this ain't cool" it makes Chris look bad.

He was uncomfortable for multiple reasons and it was more than bringing up an old joke.

and CK said "we say it it when they arent around" and was referencing he and the British Actor. You can try to make it all about the skit but it was more than that once Jerry showed he was uncomfortable with CK saying it. Rock sensed it and clammed up. CK kept going and Rock kept sipping while praying CK would shut the fuck up and move on.
12822092, have you seen the full show?
Posted by Nodima, Thu Jun-04-15 09:07 AM
because that is the role Jerry plays throughout. He's the clean comedian that reached heights higher than the other three, and it's constantly played up.

as I've said elsewhere in this post, there's a lot that can be taken from this three minute clip that has a different context in a full hour of television.

edit: I'm willing to accept I could be wrong on this as a white guy, but I was really excited for this show at the time and watched it several times when it first aired. I remember feeling a little uncomfortable during this bit but, like the other times I wasn't satisfied with the final product, it was because Ricky Gervais was giggling like a mentally stunted kids movie villain. that's still the thing that sticks with me most, particularly in this clip where his outsider-ness is on full display.

to which, I admit that one further removed (ie. a Black person viewing this) would ALSO see the discomfort in Louis indulging in the comment, even if Chris started the conversation.

I never saw the discomfort in Chris half these posts are referencing. Chris fucking started it to be honest (though I don't remember the whole episode, so I'm sure Ricky started it, as the host).

I do remember, from each of the few episodes this show had, that Ricky consistently made things less comfortable than they could have been. It was like Tough Crowd hosted by That British Guy With the Bow Tie and Big Smile on CNN at times.

12821948, Of course YOU didn't see the discomfort.
Posted by NoDrawls McGraw, Thu Jun-04-15 12:06 AM
You're not Black(and yes, it DOES matter). There are certain in-group subtle cultural nuances in his body-langauge that an out-group individual(AKA a non-Black) simply isn't gonna pick-up on.

But for those of us in the know(AKA the in-group), his discomfort was plain as day.

12821955, RE: Of course YOU didn't see the discomfort.
Posted by Nodima, Thu Jun-04-15 12:44 AM
I'll just agree to disagree. It was Chris Rock, on HBO, starting a conversation about jokes that say nigger in them. If he was going to feel comfortable in ANY scenario I'd assume it's that one, especially sitting next to his most infamous writing partner.

Again, I think Ricky's cackling glee as a host throughout the show (Talking Funny on HBO) made a LOT of moments on that thing more uncomfortable than they had to be, up to andy including this one. This thing came at the height of his understanding of what makes people uncomfortable being mistaken for genius that could hang with the biggest names in the genre.

It'd be sort of like seeing Seth Macfarlane hosting the same three comedians in a discussion today and acting like their equal.

Posted by handle, Wed Jun-03-15 11:48 PM
You could pull shit from years back that meant nothing and then try to make it a big deal for some fucking reason.

If *THAT* word (when said by anyone you don't consider to be able to say it "properly") is equal in offense (but not neccessarily in punishment) to drawing the Prophet Mohammed, or criticizing Mustafa Kemal "Ataturk" , or saying that Stalin is bad, or criticizing Kim Jun Un, then add to your signature and implement some sort of blacklist (or is that racist??) so we don't have to see it.

Here's a website you can troll for controversy: http://www.google.com

But please, focus on this now - its IMPORTANT.
12821954, He should have said n-word. That would have been more acceptable
Posted by PimpTrickGangstaClik, Thu Jun-04-15 12:33 AM
*sarcasm*

The word exists whether you like it or not. Self censoring has not effect whatsoever.

It's obvious (to me at least) that he is referencing the old Rock joke.
And that is okay with me.
It would have sounded dumb if instead he said "So I'm an n-word?"
If you're going to go for the joke, go all in.

His comedy touches on edgy subjects and requires inappropriate language sometimes.

I've never seen him say nigger in his act where it wasn't necessary. It's not like he's substituting the word for black people.
It's always an integral part of the joke he is telling.

Whether the joke is funny is subjective. But it is overreacting to get upset over it

12822129, Big fan of his show but it's hard to not admit that some of his shit is very hacky
Posted by Geez 216, Thu Jun-04-15 09:34 AM
A lot of his stand up is straight up lazy, like he knows that he's just on top of the world right now and that anything is says is gonna go over great just because he's reached that level of cult like following. It's like when Eminem knew it didn't matter what he rapped about, he knew white kids would make it triple plat. And that's the level CK has been at all for awhile, he's knows he can do dick and fart jokes and there's gonna be a space ship full of believers who are going to treat him like he painted the 16th Chapel or some shit.

I knows it's uncool to be uncomfortable with racism now a days, it's not cool to be that guy that sees racism, even when it's definitely there, but it's odd that this white guy, who passes as white, who's culturally white is treated like he's one of us because he's half Mexican, as if you could ever just tell by looking at him.

I guess this is why I scratch my head at the Rock skit. Its funny in the moment to me and comedy isn't supposed to bring out the philosophical explanations on the history of the word.

however, if shit isn't funny to me off the jump, no amount of explaining it will make me laugh or find the humor in it.

then again, CK has never b3an that funny to me but he does have his moments.

12822262, I'll admit it, CK got a pass on this that other comedians don't get.
Posted by Buddy_Gilapagos, Thu Jun-04-15 10:49 AM
And it's mainly because I like CK and I don't think that he is a racist. I also take into account that he has a long history with Rock and I don't think Rock would Fuzz with him if he thought he were racist.

I also don't consider CK a habitual line stepper when it comes to race like say Neil Brennan. Neil Brennan seems to think he has a pass and loves to pontificate on race in a way I find super racist. I also take into account Dave Chappelle doesn't Fuzz with him any more as a sign he might be racist.

I also don't think Sarah Silverman is racist. I think they are all jokes to her and I also take into account that she has disavowed alot of her earlier material because she was finding that people weren't getting the irony layer.

But at the end of the day, the difference in the folks that I give comedy passes versus don't are the ones that I like and think in my gut they aren't racist (CK, Silverman) versus the folks I just don't like (Neil Brennan).

There's a reason why we are going in on his use of the n-word not the racial politics in his comedy of which there are loads of. Which would be the inverse with Silverman and Brennan.

Now, if his use of the N-word nefarious and showing his 'true' nature as some posters are saying? *shrug* I don't think so though.

Louis CK has shown enough awareness through the years where (while i'd never give him a "pass" to use the word or feel comfortable with him using it socially) i give him the benefit of the doubt. like, i dont believe he's unaware of the word's history, weight, etc. and i aslo don't believe (and it's fairly obvious) that he wasnt using the word maliciously.

however, i can see being uncomfortable with how easily it rolls of his tongue tho. no hesitation, lol.

Posted by dba_BAD, Thu Jun-04-15 12:36 PM
a la Silverman, CK, etc

either a:

they're trying to outsmart being hurtful with the 'commentary' of the humor

or b:

they know they're being hurtful and it's just worth it to them for the sake of the joke
12822467, or C) they spent way too much time memorizing Pryor bits as kids

Seinfeld understand that message and so do I. But heeeeeeeey it's LCK, saying Nigger with causal ease, like he just brought 4 Africans off the auction block. But Case is a jerk for seeing it that why because heeeeeeeey it's LCK.

12822622, i tend to take things in context. ricky gervais also said nigger in the clip
Posted by SHAstayhighalways, Thu Jun-04-15 02:16 PM
i don't get mad at people saying words
even racist people saying nigger doesn't really upset me
its treating people like niggers that upsets me
like the whole paula deen shit i can care less that she said nigger
i hate that bitch because she had her black employees coming through the back door in the damn 2000s like its 1952
and shit like that.

look at the chet haze post. most people aren't really mad at him
just chalking him up to being the idiot that he is.
context is everything
nothing about the clip above suggests that louis ck would hang chris rock
but that's how you feel i won't take that from you.
its just fascinating thats all.
12822635, It depends on community / social environment.

I think that Paula and Chet are different. Paula is a racist that got caught and I think is trying to understand and change. Chet is a racist that thinks he's down with Black Culture and Rap. He's not trying to understand or change. But both are have and are using the word because if White Privilege and Social status mindset. The didn't and still don't care how the word affects Black People.

My wife's coworkers actually had the nerve to suggest her restaurant when we went to Savannah

Only thing I give her credit for... "it is what it is"

The wife and I say that when we hear about some racist shit and die laughing. That plea was so horrible.

12822627, that's how this brand of comedy works.
Posted by SoWhat, Thu Jun-04-15 02:18 PM
if the joke ain't funny it's wildly offensive. that's the risk comics like Louis take. they walk that line. in this case i found the joke funny and so i wasn't offended.

there are plenty examples of this type of humor failing for the most part - like what Kramer from Seinfeld did w/that heckler a few yrs ago. if the joke had been funny that shit would've been gold. but most ppl were offended and not entertained.

of course, it's fine if this joke ain't funny to you or anyone else. that's the nature of comedy too - it's wildly subjective. it seems most ppl who heard the joke weren't offended - that's why this 4 yr old joke didn't cause CK any professional or personal problems, it seems.

yes.

still, this joke is out there and it hasn't caused homie any problems, it seems. all in all the joke worked. of course some ppl found it unfunny and offensive. i'm sure he can live w/that - it's par for the course w/his comedy.

12822678, it's like this (I seriously wanted to leave this topic alone but oh well)...
Posted by Somnus, Thu Jun-04-15 02:45 PM
there's a significant difference between Louie using the word while adressing an audience during a bit to illustrate a point as to how the word is so wildly offensive but yet & still used in such a casual way (by Blacks & Whites) and blurting out that word in the midst of casual conversation, albeit in the attempt to be shocking or cutting-edge ironic at the expense of Black folks, mainly his contemporaries, who might take a offense.
there's Devil-may-care social commentary and then there's flippant antagonizing...even Carlin knew that.
12823065, So you know his gag on this, right?

I'm not suggesting you don't, just curious.

For anyone who doesn't or would like a reminder:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PdtHZ_6oz9Q

there's a bit of rough editing but it does go off on a different tangent towards its ultimate punchline. bit of the front end chopped off too.

Are you implying the HBO show was a private conversation?

12822815, I wish they went into WHY he says it
Posted by Cocobrotha2, Thu Jun-04-15 04:09 PM
He said he says it, and I know that's enough for alot of people to write him off. But I want to hear why bc he's usually very articulate. It looked like they were headed in that direction though the snippet stops short (or starts late). Once I hear why, I can decide for myself if I agree or not.

Either way, I think that had the makings of a very interesting and constructive discussion on race considering they're roughly on equal footing, were comfortable with each other enough to open up on a controversial topic, didn't attack each other and appeared to have widely diverging views.

If there were a couple other black veiwpoints, that's how I would picture the mythical "discussion of race" should happen.

Posted by BigJazz, Thu Jun-04-15 06:13 PM
and what they do in that video is what we do here everyday:

over analyze and intellectualize the shit outta any subject.

somebody said in another post that the late great Patrice Oneal would joke the shit outta anybody trying to break down and discuss comedy. to him, it's either funny or its not. fuck the subject matter, fuck your sensitivity. is it funny?

we been doin that shit in GD since late '99. the shit we talk about all day everyday? the rest of the world doesn't give any subject that much thoughtful consideration.
