12818868, who says she's trying to be a sex symbol?
Posted by SoWhat, Mon Jun-01-15 12:22 PM
12818873, the magazine cover.
Posted by daryloneal, Mon Jun-01-15 12:24 PM
12818881, what about the magazine cover says she's trying to be a sex symbol?

Posted by daryloneal, Mon Jun-01-15 12:29 PM
12818897, is everyone who takes a picture trying to be a sex symbol?
Posted by SoWhat, Mon Jun-01-15 12:31 PM
.
12818902, If it's on the cover of a top rated magazine.... maybe
Posted by daryloneal, Mon Jun-01-15 12:32 PM
12818904, what about this particular picture says CJ is trying to be a sex symbol?
Posted by SoWhat, Mon Jun-01-15 12:33 PM
12818911, would it be less offensive to you if I said she was trying to be sexy?
Posted by daryloneal, Mon Jun-01-15 12:36 PM
Because it doesn't change my opinion of it all.
12818912, i'd have the same question - what about the pic says she's
Posted by SoWhat, Mon Jun-01-15 12:36 PM
trying to be sexy?
12818916, what about the pic doesn't
Posted by daryloneal, Mon Jun-01-15 12:38 PM
12818922, the posing, lighting and costume.
Posted by SoWhat, Mon Jun-01-15 12:40 PM

12818928, Great.
Posted by daryloneal, Mon Jun-01-15 12:42 PM
I disagree.

But no matter what you call it, sexy, cute, attractive, striking, daring, bold, wonderful, I call it disgusting.

Which is why I'm not going to debate whether or not the intention is ACTUALLY to be a sex symbol

I was partly being sarcastic. So I don't care that much.

If it makes you feel any better, I don't want to see Betty White in her underwear either.
12818930, why do you call it 'disgusting'?
Posted by SoWhat, Mon Jun-01-15 12:44 PM
12818938, I just do.
Posted by daryloneal, Mon Jun-01-15 12:47 PM
12818941, okay.
Posted by SoWhat, Mon Jun-01-15 12:47 PM
12818943, On a separate note, it's ironic that she is treated like a hero, while Kim...
Posted by daryloneal, Mon Jun-01-15 12:50 PM
gets trashed on a daily basis.

Kinda speaks to the twisted world we live in.

Caitlyn is exploiting this no less than Kim did her situation.
12818954, sure, dude.
Posted by SoWhat, Mon Jun-01-15 12:57 PM
sure.
12818970, KK is loved by twice as many people tho...
Posted by legsdiamond, Mon Jun-01-15 01:03 PM
she isn't making all this money from being trashed.

and plenty of people hate on Jenner for this transition.

but maybe you are talking about OKP and not the real world.
12819005, I didn't say she got more trash than love. I just said she gets trashed.
Posted by daryloneal, Mon Jun-01-15 01:16 PM
Which she does... a lot.

I'm not seeing a lot of that with Caitlyn. Maybe I'm just missing it.

All the posts I see are of admiration and calling her a hero.
12819017, OKP prides itself on being progressive
Posted by legsdiamond, Mon Jun-01-15 01:19 PM
12819021, I'm going to assume you're black.
Posted by atruhead, Mon Jun-01-15 01:21 PM

she's a hero for her community the same way MLK, Malcolm X, Rosa Parks and the Black Panthers were for us
12819031, you're just missing it.

Posted by SoWhat, Mon Jun-01-15 01:41 PM
First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Socialist.

Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Trade Unionist.

Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Jew.

Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.
12819079, Great, so the plight of the Kardashian clan has your support..
Posted by daryloneal, Mon Jun-01-15 01:44 PM

12819108, I said as much in reply #134
Posted by daryloneal, Mon Jun-01-15 01:53 PM
i.e. You're defending bullshit for the sake of your agenda.

The reality is you're helping their agenda.
12819113, uh huh.
Posted by SoWhat, Mon Jun-01-15 01:54 PM
sure, pumpkin.
12819064, what agenda and how are you affected?
Posted by atruhead, Mon Jun-01-15 01:36 PM
the only agenda I believe is taking place is for all things Kardashian/Jenner to capture America's attention

but it isnt difficult to remove yourself from viewing pop culture
12819070, Actually:
Posted by daryloneal, Mon Jun-01-15 01:38 PM
>the only agenda I believe is taking place is for all things
>Kardashian/Jenner to capture America's attention

this is the "bullshit" I was referring to. Not the "agenda".

12819101, I cant pretend to know your motivations here
Posted by atruhead, Mon Jun-01-15 01:50 PM
but disgust is a pretty heavy word to throw around all willy nilly especially dealing with LGBT issues

going off of this post I'd be more inclined to throw you in the bigot pile than the "not a bigot" pile
12819105, Great.

12819505, i dunno if "sex symbol" is the right wording but ...
Posted by ConcreteCharlie, Tue Jun-02-15 12:13 AM
you aint copping that outfit at dress barn, maybe frederick's of hollywood or some shit.

to me it's sexy-ish in sort of an elegant way, but dude is not wearing something annie lennox or sade would have worn. he's wearing a fucking glorified slip. i think it's somewhat apropos to show his body--after all we are all curious to see the change--but there is no denying it's revealing and somewhat sexual. it goes beyond just "a picture" or showing femininity or whatever. i don't mind it and i am certainly not disgusted, but come on with this up-and-down denial.
12819539, the costume is revealing, the posing and the facial expression
Posted by SoWhat, Tue Jun-02-15 06:23 AM
show confidence. nothing in the pic says 'come fuck me'. it says 'i'm showing you my body'. but it doesn't say 'i'm showing you my body b/c i want you to fuck'.

i think some of us can't help reading sex into showings of the body - especially when the body belongs to a member of the opposite gender (or whichever gender attracts us) and the showing is mixed w/confidence. but i don't see that Caitlyn or Annie were going for 'sex' in that pic. that's not a Maxim cover shot or even a Cosmo cover shot. THOSE cover shots scream 'COME FUCK ME'. THOSE shots are 'sexy'. THOSE women are usually TRYING to be sex symbols.

https://fashionartiste.files.wordpress.com/2010/07/cosmo-coveraug.jpeg

i don't see it in this shot of Caitlyn by Annie L. maybe there are other pix from the same shoot w/different composition and different intention. there might be some sexy pix in the full spread. but that cover shot ain't one. it's fairly chaste.

12820121, he said sex symbol, not porn star though
Posted by ConcreteCharlie, Tue Jun-02-15 02:46 PM
i think they went as far as they could while still being tasteful and elegant, but it is definitely subjective and a matter of degree. i don't think dude's categorization was unfair or way off base. i dont quite get his reaction of disgust, but it's his emotion, not mine.

she nailed it.
12818978, If they were going for 'sexy' it looks like a stab at 'classy sexy'
Posted by Atillah Moor, Mon Jun-01-15 01:05 PM
After paying attention to the photo though-- it's not really sexy at all (imho) they may have been going for that in a subtle way, but I don't think they nailed it.

I think the nature of the pose if taken with a famous woman in the same outfit would be considered sexy and that the initial reaction by some may come from that disconnect of knowing this is a dude but seeing him propped up as if he were an actress/model type i.e. the usual Vanity Fair tripe.
12818995, i think they were going for classy & revealing but not sexy.
Posted by SoWhat, Mon Jun-01-15 01:12 PM
she's wearing a one-piece something (underwear or swimsuit) on purpose - i think she wants the picture to be revealing. and indeed posing on a magazine cover in that clothing is revealing. i suspect the point is that she has nothing to hide...or at least not much to hide.

but then she keeps it classy by NOT being sexy or vulgar.
12819009, I think revealing would be the right word.
Posted by Atillah Moor, Mon Jun-01-15 01:17 PM
Although for some revealing can be sexy.
12819011, which says more about the person viewing the pic

12818910, is that really a swimsuit?
Posted by legsdiamond, Mon Jun-01-15 12:35 PM
just askin'
12818913, i'm not sure.
Posted by SoWhat, Mon Jun-01-15 12:37 PM
it looks like one but i dunno for sure.

what does it look like to you?
12818914, #actually
Posted by SHAstayhighalways, Mon Jun-01-15 12:37 PM
that's some underwear.
i don't care either way just clarifying.
12818917, i'm not sure if it's a swimsuit or underwear.
Posted by SoWhat, Mon Jun-01-15 12:39 PM
it could be either based on the cover pic.
12818920, i am 100% sure that it is underwear
Posted by SHAstayhighalways, Mon Jun-01-15 12:40 PM
its ok for you to not know stuff sometimes and just leave it at that.

"i'm not sure" = i don't know.

and i'm even 'leaving it there'. in that i'm not attempting to prove whether that costume is a swimsuit or some sort of underwear.

before homegirl's reply i thought swimsuit. after reading it and looking at the pic again i'm not sure.

Technically, you're a bigot with some of your agendas.

there was an influx of trolls and class clowns a few yrs ago and several of us complained and whined about them but the mods and admins did nothing. so since we couldn't beat them i decided to join them. while i haven't adopted their content i have adopted some of their methods.

for example the 'database' thing i throw around sometimes...that came from SeV (one of the clowns). he seemed to have an extensive history of personal details posted by OKPs that he'd use when attacking on the boards. i joked that he must maintain a database w/the info...and i started joking that i maintain my own database of personal info on OKPs.

On some technical shit, the gender to use there was "woman", but I done put that in
his face and he ain't see it. Even if he does see it, I believe he would disagree that this
person is, indeed a woman. I think SoWhat believes the same thing. We could both
be wrong tho. SoWhat often skips the step of finding out whether ignorance is rooted
in bigotry or just plain ignorance. I get why, but it makes him wrong a lot. Daryl ain't
really proven himself to be the most openminded on the subject tho.

when they're being called out for their bigotry. bigots almost never own that shit. they will often use words to deny the bigotry but it is revealed in other ways. so whatever homie says directly doesn't tell me as much as the other more subtle indirect shit. plus, i'm not brand new - this is not my first day on the Internet or on OKP.

usually in these posts i have some idea of the history of the person i'm talking to or about that may extend beyond the four corners of the post at hand. that history informs my stance and the conversation.

Posted by SoWhat, Mon Jun-01-15 02:19 PM
i have no problem being wrong - it usually presents an opportunity for me to learn something. and when i'm wrong about a stance i've taken i can own that and accept correction. here i don't see where i was wrong.

you asked if the statement would be LESS offensive if you'd said 'she' was trying to be sexy.

i answered that the statement itself would've been LESS offensive if that were so.

the fact that you later went on to refer to Caitlyn as 'she' in other replies doesn't change the original statement. it also doesn't mitigate that statement's offensiveness.

further, you also said the picture at issue is 'disgusting' and that viewing it made you throw up (or want to). you didn't ask but those parts of the statement are also offensive given the full context here which is part of why i'd said the 'she' change would've only made the statement less offensive.

also, see #147.

so i dunno what 'gotcha' moment you're having w/yourself over there but i hope you're enjoying it.

I was repeating my own posts where I was referring to her as "her" and "Caitlyn" including when that question was asked 100 replies ago (see reply 58, dude). And that question was about "sexy" vs. "sex symbol", not the word "she".

You can take whatever you want from my first post.

Frankly, I don't give a fuck.

12819076, It's not a sexy pose...
Posted by StephBMore, Mon Jun-01-15 01:42 PM
it's on a female magazine and a majority of the pics on the covers are not trying to sell sex, just selling clothes and the person. She's in a lingerie body suit, but her legs are crossed, she's sitting back, her expression is subtle, not pouty or exuding sex. even if she was naked, it's about presentation when it comes to being sexy.

now i bet she feels sexy being her true self, and she's confident and that's what you're seeing in the pic. but the pic is not meant to be a sexy pic and if thats' what you got out of it, maybe you should question why you feel that way. because most men aren't looking at it like why is she trying to be sexy.

guess your feelings got a little confused there?
12819122, If she impresses you, great.

way to flip it and not make it about you and YOUR issue, which is what we are talking about here. Impressed? Well she does look good, so yeah I am considering how she looked as a he. But the discussion is on why YOU think it was a sexy pose and how old ppl shouldn't pose like that.

12819072, technically he suffers nothing if he uses a feminine pronoun
Posted by SoWhat, Mon Jun-01-15 01:39 PM
to address a woman who has a penis. but she suffers when he uses a masculine pronoun. she suffers due to the cumulative impact of all of the b/s she deals with from the world around her simply b/c she's trying to live her life. he's adding to her pain. referring to her as 'she' doesn't hurt him and it can help her even a tiny little bit. there's no good reason to use a masculine pronoun - except to be an asshole. if one wants to own one's assholishness then that's a different story. but it can't be cloaked w/'logic' or 'reason' b/c that's not what it's about.
12819110, If he doesn't see her was a woman, he isn't hurting anyone

Transgender refugee set to wed

A transgender Kiwi officially recognised as a woman has found love and will get married today.

Eliana Rubashkyn, who came to New Zealand as a refugee in May last year, was issued with a New Zealand certificate of identity stating her gender as "female" though she had not had sex-change surgery.

The 26-year-old, originally from Colombia, is booked to register her marriage in Auckland today to a man from Israel.

"My life is coming together, but I think getting married is the best thing ever," said Miss Rubashkyn.

Her 24-year-old partner, who wanted to be known only by his first name Itamar, said his family did not approve of their relationship.

They threatened to publicly shame him in Israel for "being gay" and wanted to commit him into a psychiatric hospital, he said.

"Itamar had to literally escape from his family and country with just the shirt on his back, just so we can be together," Miss Rubashkyn said.

She talked her mother into paying for Itamar's ticket to Auckland after his finances were frozen by his family.

Born Luis Alexander Rubashkyn, Miss Rubashkyn was referred for resettlement to New Zealand by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.

She decided to migrate only after she was assured that her gender of preference could be issued in her travel documents without the need for sex-change surgery.

Miss Rubashkyn, who now has a New Zealand driver's licence and a job in flight operations support, said she met Itamar about eight months ago on a dating website.

"At first I did not share with him about my gender issues because I was afraid of how he will see me," she said.

"But when I finally did, I was overjoyed that he accepted me and continued to love me for who I am."

Itamar said he was "deep in love" with Miss Rubashkyn, and that it "did not matter" that she had not undergone sex-change surgery.

"In my eyes, she is a beautiful woman ... she is even more beautiful in person than on the computer screen," he said.

"I feel sad that I had to leave everything behind, including my family, but I have no regrets because now I am with my true love."

Itamar was detained by Immigration New Zealand officials at Auckland Airport because they did not think he was a bona fide visitor. He arrived in Auckland with no luggage, no credit card and very little money.

Itamar said he was questioned for two hours. He was released only after an immigration lawyer engaged by Miss Rubashkyn intervened.

He will apply for residency under the partnership category to remain in New Zealand after the wedding.

Immigration border manager Senta Jehle said Itamar arrived on May 19 and was eventually issued with a three-month visitor visa. "The call to Ms Rubashkyn was made as part of the verification process."

Ms Jehle said that to meet requirements, visitors must show a valid passport, a return ticket and sufficient funds to support their stay in New Zealand.

12819382, I got one question
Posted by Big Kuntry, Mon Jun-01-15 06:43 PM
bruce said that he was living a lie for all his life but, almost refers to Catlyn as a totally different person...to the point that she's fictitious.

If he was Catlyn all along shouldn't we already know her?

Is it common for trans to refer to their true identity in this way?

12819392, we haven't met Caitlyn, apparently.
Posted by SoWhat, Mon Jun-01-15 07:04 PM
he said he lived a lie as Bruce. we met Bruce.

i have heard some other trans ppl refer to their former selves that way and i dunno how common that is.

FACT! This is a sad story that shouldn't be hyped in the media. And at the core this is all temporary - fueled by chemicals, pills, and plastic surgery. Anyway, please hold all of the questions, false religious replies, hatful comments and negative language - no of it's necessary. Plus I won't be responding with any additional comments, so knock yourselves out and have fun if you want to just cap off because it's in you.

If my best friend was a transgender person(not sure if that is correct terminology), after knowing them for most of my life as a male, I know for a fact that I would at times refer to them as "he" or "him", not to be hurtful, but because that is how I had known them my entire life. I still have trouble with calling long time female friends by their married name if I knew them by their maiden name for extended periods of time. Same for friends that change names for religious reasons - if you have been "Fred" since we were kids, and you have a revelation and change your name to "xxxxx" should you be offended that I still call you Fred sometimes, if I make it clear that it isn't because I disrespect your faith?

Many of us old enough to actually remember Bruce Jenner from the '76 Olympics (and subsequent Wheaties boxes) grew up with "Bruce"...40 years of knowing "Bruce". Caitlyn didn't come to be in the public ewe until very recently. "Bruce" underwent a transitional period to "Caitlyn", correct? If she is entitled to a transitional period, aren't the rest of us? (at least those that aren't intentionally being hurtful)
12819431, hell, Caitlyn still calls herself 'Bruce' by accident. LOL

Posted by Starbaby Jones, Mon Jun-01-15 10:25 PM
Especially in the initial period of transition. Mistakes are understandable. Now, if a person flat out refuses to respect their gender expression, that's another story.

Posted by dafriquan, Tue Jun-02-15 08:23 AM
Most of the other examples you mentioned, the people still outwardly look the same.

I think the transition will be easier than say a married woman (I still forget that my married sister no longer shares the same last name as me)

Curious though. How often would you have to refer to Bruce / Caitlyn in real life anyway?

but there'd definitely be more shade offered too.

i expected the Kardashians (including Kanye) would not let her out there looking a mess. i believe Kim actually had that conversation w/Bruce before the latest phase of the transition. however much of this story is fabricated...i believe THAT part of it. LOL
