12808691, Too early to start making Song of the Summer Predictions?
Posted by Buddy_Gilapagos, Tue May-19-15 09:27 AM
I was actually hoping it might be

Classic Man

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nsiN0W15w0U

or

Chance and Action Bronson's Baby Blue

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bVP_w1rQweE

But I feel like they haven't been picking up traction the way they should be by this point.

White Radio it's Taylor Swift though.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-CmadmM5cOk

But to set the stage, I guess we need a ruling as to what were the songs of the summer for 2014 right?

and the song of summer 2014 was either 'Fancy' by Iggy Azalea or 'Rude' by Magic. indeed, they performed well on the Billboard Hot 100 and the BB Summer Songs charts. plus i recall hearing them 'everywhere'.

12808885, It's pretty early. For last year, Hot nigga, 0 to 100, and Lifestyle came
Posted by -DJ R-Tistic-, Tue May-19-15 11:33 AM
out like June and later. Even though Hot nigga was more so song of the Fall outside of NY.

Most songs do drop in May, though...I feel like even 20 years ago, "This is how we do it" and "I got five on it" dropped in May. Same as "I'm on one" three years ago. "A milli" was like May 2008, too.

Hell, Pop that literally came out Memorial Day weekend 2012.

To me, the only candidates right now are:

Bitch better have my money (Took a while to pick up, but is pretty big now)
My way
Classic man

At least for like Rap/R&B Club type songs. But I feel like if there is one, it'll drop in June again.
12808938, plenty SOS's were released way before May.
Posted by SoWhat, Tue May-19-15 11:57 AM
like Mariah's 'We Belong Together' which was the song of summer 2005 and was released in March 2005.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/We_Belong_Together

last year's 'Fancy' was released in February 2014.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fancy_%28Iggy_Azalea_song%29

2012's 'Call Me Maybe' was released the previous September.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Call_Me_Maybe

'Blurred Lines' was released in March 2013.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blurred_Lines
12808948, It's different every year for sure. But since none have been released
Posted by -DJ R-Tistic-, Tue May-19-15 12:00 PM
yet, does that mean there won't be one? Or that something wack will become one by default? Or that we will get one dropping in the next 3-4 weeks?

A lot of songs don't get as much play right at release, either. Even Uptown Funk wasn't getting nearly as much love in November. And it felt like "Fancy" didn't work with my Black crowds until May-June.
12808966, who says none have been released yet?
Posted by SoWhat, Tue May-19-15 12:04 PM
this year's SOS may have already been released. it likely has been so released.

>yet, does that mean there won't be one?

there will be one.

Or that something
>wack will become one by default?

you might think the SOS 2015 is 'wack' but there will be a SOS anyway.

2005's SOS ('We Belong Together') was fairly unconventional for a SOS. there's no disputing its status as SOS 2005 b/c it sat atop BB's Hot 100 and R&B Singles charts for the entire summer. even though it's a slow song it was the SOS that year.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Billboard_Hot_100_number-one_singles_of_2005
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_number-one_R%26B_singles_of_2005_%28U.S.%29

Or that we will get one

it almost never is obvious upon release.

yes. some SOS's were released like 6 months before summer and only gained traction at radio and otherwise during the early weeks of summer.

With that, aside from the charts, it's always pretty subjective. There's always the one that the charts can "verify" as the biggest...then there's the song that certain demographics will say was the song of the summer in their opinion. So I wonder how it'll work this year.

I think part of this is that in this era, the whole world tends to hear new "hit songs" the very first day they come out...so there's some that people love to death on that first day. Some of them sustain, some don't. But it's interesting when people don't hear the songs til months later. I remember hearing "Lifestyle" BET Weekend, only because a DJ from Miami played it, and NOBODY knew it yet. I looked it up, and saw that it was 3-4 weeks old...I was mad at myself for not knowing it.

Even with Fetty Wap "Trap Queen," DJ's on the East told me about it in November-December and I heard it and said "this ain't gonna be a hit" and now it's Top 3 out. So yea, it might be something I've heard and just have no idea that it's about to break.
12809088, SOS ain't subjective, really.
Posted by SoWhat, Tue May-19-15 12:38 PM
>With that, aside from the charts, it's always pretty
>subjective.

not really. we can all have our favorites - those are subjective. the song we think is best - that's also subjective. but THE song that captured the public's attention over the course of the 3 months of summer is measured objectively. we can use the various airplay and sales charts and other figures to figure that out.

There's always the one that the charts can
>"verify" as the biggest...then there's the song that certain
>demographics will say was the song of the summer in their
>opinion. So I wonder how it'll work this year.

LOL. bless your heart - it seems you can only appreciate and analyze music from one perspective: the level of response from your club audiences. it's cool. LOL

i'm sure 'WBT' didn't set the club(s where you spin) on fire in summer 2005 so you disagree it was the SOS even though the song broke sales and airplay records that year - mostly during the summer. i remember ppl feeling it was weird that WBT was declared SOS 2005 b/c it's a slow song and i agreed w/them - normally the SOS (w/any given genre or subgenre or demographic, even) is uptempo. but there was universal agreement among critics and analysts that WBT ruled summer 2005. still, since it wasn't huge in Hip-Hop clubs i'm sure you'd disagree it was SOS 2005.

I feel that because we're OKP, this is more about our own lenses, vs the overall charts and relating it to EVERYONE. And not just OKP, but the folks that we associate with. Using quantitative data makes it too boring anyway, it's more fun debating what song we saw get the best reaction vs just saying "well the charts and statistics indicate that...."

And it's not just about clubs at all, but clubs do give the best "in person" knowledge that affects most of us more than solely what charts show. Seeing "In da club" and "Get low" at prime...you FELT like "this shit is HUUUUUUUGE!!!!!" It's about the experience...seeing hundreds or even thousands of people react to a song really hits the hardest.
12809236, I agree - that's OKP.
Posted by SoWhat, Tue May-19-15 01:30 PM
12809037, I feel like early releases and slow builds are the norm.
Posted by Buddy_Gilapagos, Tue May-19-15 12:23 PM
I think it's out already.

may be the old man in me but I always surprised how early I hear a song on OKP before it generally pops on the radio.

Childish Gambino's 3005 was posted here a good 6-8 months before it got regular heavy radio spin.

12809183, They all owe Mustard a check for his style. Crazy that Mustard
Posted by -DJ R-Tistic-, Tue May-19-15 01:10 PM
has changed the sound of actual Pop music at this point. All the crossover artists who woulda had a 128 BPM song like "Only girl in the world" or "Yeah 3X" five years ago are now making Mustard sounding songs.
12809196, This is true. What was Mustard's last big hit?
Posted by Overqualified, Tue May-19-15 01:14 PM
Seems like anyone can get that sound (and does) without actually using him.

They all owe Lil Jon and Mr Collipark

This tempo is 12 years old in pop music remember that

Mustard/Mike Free definitely helped change it back from 140

as did Dj Snake and Baauer who had much larger records than Mustard
12809428, Mustard combined elements from Jon, Collipark, Scott Storch,
Posted by -DJ R-Tistic-, Tue May-19-15 02:55 PM
a bit of New Orleans, Jerkin/Hyphy, and even old L.A. (G-Funk, tiny bit of 80's) and the Bay. As simple as the sound is on surface, his tracks cover all those sounds in different ways.
12809195, RE: Too early to start making Song of the Summer Predictions?
Posted by double 0, Tue May-19-15 01:14 PM
Too early...

Early runner is still "Trap Queen" (Is there even an official remix?). It took forever for that shit to hit them good folks I DJ for. Now IT is the one.

I don't think this will be a heavy single year like past years. I am sure Rihanna, Ye, Drake are prepping something...

but whatever it is it may have to come outta left field.

Rando Predictions:

Justin Beiber/Jack U - Where Are You Now
Nicki Minaj/David Guetta - Hey Mama
Dj Snake/Aluna George - You Know You Like It
Tove Lo - Talking Body
George Ezra - Budapest

If the charts need a song to replace earn it then there is this too

number 1 on Spotify global 50.. gotsta funk with the portishead/isaac hayes sample

He isn't needed for a "mustard" beat anymore and he doesn't have Mike Free or his regular go-to's

And man, every single year, people think Mustard has reached his peak. 2011, people figured Rack City would be it. 2012, People figured I'm different would be it. 2013, R.I.P., My nigga, Paranoid, Burn rubber. Last year, Post to be, Who do you love and the whole YG album.

At this point, there are lot of folks using his sound (not sure if you count Nic Nac too) but I think it will require him linking up with the right producers again. He has access to so many, seeing that even Kanye worked with him on IDFWU. I'm surely not counting him out.

The issue is.. He created his own radio format. The mustard sound can only replace the mustard sound. So when one single dies another will replace it. But none of them have reached a higher peak than any of the non mustard beats.. Iggy fancy, arianna problem..

I think that's the crossover jam of the summer that'll hit old and young. Or maybe that's just wishful thinking because I love the fuck out of it. Reminds me of an early 2000s one hit wonder mixed with Paul Simon's Graceland for good measure.

It's a lot of songs fighting for the spot but no clear favorite. I was pulling for "Trap Queen" but I think it peaked a little too early. It's hanging on though.

The Snake/Aluna George song is kinda catchy.
12837329, Well the technical, "well actually" heads here will tell you that there WILL BE
Posted by -DJ R-Tistic-, Tue Jun-23-15 02:59 PM
one, and that'll be whatever song spends the most time at #1 on the charts.

But either way, I think the biggest hits came early, such as Uptown Funk, which peaked in like January/February, and even those like "Post to be" which dropped November-December but already peaked. "My way" is the biggest Urban song for sure, but it isn't gonna cross over but so much.

more play than "My way" right now. Some club hits become huge on radio, while some never make it to radio. And some radio hits never get past Midnight in the club, meaning they are cool for early vibe hits, but never true bangers.

My new prediction

The Weeknd - Can't Feel My Face

Exploding in every format currently.. Pop, Urban radio etc...

#2 on Shazaam

OMI - Cheerleader .. could be it BUT needs another reggae artist or Pitbull to jump on it to solidify it.

They are REALLY trying with this Classic man (and now a kendrick remix) song.. but white america don't like bougie black shit ever so..
12837348, my wife loves Classic Man...especially when i showed her the video.

tbh I dont want it to.. lol

the song is fine but the idea in the video of the "overly well dressed" man getting respect from the cops while the regular dudes were being hemmed up is not something I'd want to promote on a larger level..

especially since a couple years ago dude was dressed exactly like them dudes.. sans died hair

Pharrell did it again
It's like let's get blown pt ii
I had to cop the single off iTunes

I've loved every project those guys have dropped thus far
They under promoted their last release "boom"
They had a lot of strong songs on there
12841252, i was a little disappointed by BOOM
Posted by teefiveten, Mon Jun-29-15 11:49 AM
and i wish they'd release some of the older stuff at a better quality (mainly 'It Girl') but I love those guys.

Last Kiss is crazy. went over well at Makossa
12841284, Live for die for was better than boom for sure
Posted by illEskoBar221, Mon Jun-29-15 12:05 PM
i feel like what made live for die for
such a great release was the fact that it
sounded so california...because they didnt really switch up the
production team it was still THC iman omari and Brook D'leau

i think they tried to broaden their appeal with boom
a little but even the ratchet songs"tongue ring" and "barbary coast"
were serviceable...i actually think that barbary coast wouldve been
cool for a summer song

and it girl reminded me so much of outkast
"massive motion" is my favorite i think
between that the function and pasadena

when i was in NYC for gov ball and summer jam
"last kiss" was all i was playing lol
12845781, I love Boom, THC did the majority of that too.

12866747, This Future DS2 hype is actually comical.
Posted by -DJ R-Tistic-, Wed Jul-29-15 02:44 PM
I feel folks are caught up in the hype, but it's really no standout tracks at THAT level. "Real sisters" and "Trap niggas" get the most play after "Commas," but those will never touch "My way" "Flex" or even what "Same damn time" was three years ago.

Saturday, I played "Groupies" at the HBCU picnic...some folks bounced, but no major reaction. Literally a song later, someone came up to me and said "ay, you gotta play something from that DS2! Anything!!" and I said "I just played Groupies..." and he said "oh...well..........play some more!"

Then yesterday, I'm meeting with my boy going over songs he wants to hear at his Birthday party. He's like "you gotta play somethin from DS2!" and I was like which song, aside from Commas? And he's like "man the whole thing go!" and I'm like "well which songs????" He starts going through it on his computer...after 4-5 songs, he's like "I'm still tryna find the one that GO, I know it's one of em on here." I just shook my head.

Posted by Nodima, Wed Jul-29-15 02:59 PM
radio came at it with some real hype (and I will say it was a bit bizarre to hear a song that sounds like that on Omaha radio and with "ass" not getting censored) but I'd already heard it and knew it was Future at his absolutely most mumbly mouthed and Drake just trying to fit in, but the girl driving hadn't heard it yet so I put on my Flex voice and shouted out "oh damn, Future and Drake, this is 'bout to kill 'em all summer!"

then we proceeded to spend the next three minutes playing the "what is Future saying" game.

for the record I like the song but it's a weird push for a summer jam. that's some drinking E&J alone and the sack's gone dry music.

Lots of people are on or have been on Interscope that haven't worked out but yeah. I think he's at his peak. I dont see him being any bigger than he is. He'll def have a better chance tho being on a major so congrats to him cause I can see him doing Kid Ink type stuff so it should be good for the both of parties. But we all know Kid Ink ain't gonna be any bigger than he was/is. They both will make some quick money off it.

LOL let me clarify why i dont think its a good signing so I dont look like im just hating. Its super hard coming from this city and sounding exactly like Drake and Party and not getting any love from that crew, it doesnt help that most of this city looks at him like he's a cornball cause he kinda is. Theres been so many that tried it or are still trying it. He has his own audience now tho and they def come out to his shows and shit so thats good for him but I just dont see it being any bigger than that. I hope he proves me wrong.
