12807222, Nas is the only MC who hasn't turned corny to me.
Posted by Buddy_Gilapagos, Sun May-17-15 08:27 AM
It's hard to be a premier 90s MC. I'm not mad at anyone for getting money, but daily show, Justin bribery roasts and Amy Schumer sketches kind of takes from your edge of representING the pulse of the streets. I see Jay with gwenyth paltrow; I see 15 instagram'in his dinner parties, Ice T and Ice Cube on the promotional circuit promoting their latest tv shows and movie, I can't be mad at them. I'd probably do the same.

But I saw Nas at a Google Q&a and dispite all the 2520 love he was receiving, he looked like he rather be drinking crown back on the block.

It's hard to grow up. Busta sounds silly being damn near 50 talking bout being up in the club. But then it's hard to evolve ad listen to rappers like Jay and kanye spend their time complaining about how hard it is to be rich and famous.

Even if you still about it, you still sound a lil Itty tiny bit corny rhyming about Selma.

I don't know, maybe this post is just a "Life is Good" appreciation post. It's been out for a while and It's still my favorite grown man rap album.

BUT

Nas chose his path. he chose to stay in the crown & henny sippin lane rather than more more toward main stream pop culture.

Not trying to see the GOAT on some cornball shit like Jay
plus that Henny commercial with NY state of mind is probably the best alcohol endorsement since the St. Ides raps of the early 90's
Nas, Primo, and the sampled artists getting paid
12807235, I agree. Nas and Pharaoh Monche.
Posted by after midnight, Sun May-17-15 09:30 AM
But I hate how Monche dumbs down the lyrics nowadays. I guess Organized Konfusion-type lyrics wouldn't be right for the radio.

i still laugh at the line in Loco Motive where talks about dude bragging to his girl about a scar Nas gave him. although I could put scarface in the same boat as far not being corny when he got older.

doesnt have the same things going on that jay, 15, cube and them have going on, at least not publically. hes always pretty much just been about the music. he isnt worth 100 milly so he doesnt make whiney raps about the woes of having 100Ms. He isnt about bein in the tabloids etc so he doesnt make corny shit about how the pap is chasing him and fuckin up his life.

hes always been a different type of a celebrity. kinda like tip, hes A list without really having A list "problems". all that is a long way of saying he makes choices that kinda keep him from having corny rap subject matter if that makes sense
12807572, Definitely, if he were a 100M ninja he would probably be different.

12807480, Are we just looking at the endpoints and not tracking overall trajectory?
Posted by DickGrayson, Mon May-18-15 12:29 AM
To say he was NEVER corny would be questionable, but everyone has to grow up. I just wouldn't say Nas was never corny if we look at Oochie Wally and You Owe Me era.

I am also interested in hearing whether Pos and Dave are/were ever seen as corny.
12807577, I am just looking at where they are now. Yeah oochie wally was corny.
Posted by Buddy_Gilapagos, Mon May-18-15 08:45 AM
Pos and Dave, I don't know. I have to see where there new album lands. Part of me is worried that they will drop this new album and will sound like they should have stayed retired. I am in wait and see mode.

These artists are supposed to mature. For the record, Hov had a good run as the ageless street artist from 86 to 06. At that point, please age gracefully. Every artist you mentioned put in the work and elevated themselves above having to conform to the streets. Premier 90s MCs make classics are immortal icons in this hip-hop shit. Quest rocked over 200 shows a year for fucking decades bruh so he can do whatever he wants. Every time someone tells him he's not street all he has to do is point at his track record.

I want to see the icons elevate this art form and move into different ventures if they choose to. Pass on the game they learned to the next generation. Maturation isn't corny and some of the people that feel it's corny are the same ones stopping the art form from aging.

Busta an OG so he don't count. But everyone else that's not a vet or a legend in their 50's trying to go for the 18 and 20 year olds is corny to me. It's one thing if you're producer or DJ which is cool but an artist can get the entire fuck outta here with that bullshit.

In closing, none of these artists are immortal and will look corny at some point doing something in someone's eyes.
12807639, I think you are missing my point.
Posted by Buddy_Gilapagos, Mon May-18-15 09:32 AM
>These artists are supposed to mature.

Of course. BTW, Nas has matured as well. Just not in a way that seems corny.

Street has nothing to do with it. Jadakiss sounds crazy to me being so old and still talking about street ish. Quest was never street so he doesn't have anything to apologize for or need to point to his track record. It seems to me though that you are equating maturing with hob-nobbing with white folks. Doing tracks with Chris Martin isn't in itself maturing and elevating your artistry. There is still a requirement that the music be dope. But these days folks get point just for doing it. Kanye gets points for making a track with Paul McCartney. Nevermind the song is forgettable and is no where near as good as either of them's average material.

It's possible to mature, not still be in the streets, but still not become a mainstream white family friendly artist of some depth. That's what's nas has done in my IMHOP.

I agree mostly. Busta seems corny to me though for going after 18 and 20 years olds.

well yeah that's my point.

I've got two kids and have sported a bjorn when they were younger.

I was pissed last week because I missed Mark Maron's interview of Terri Gross at Brooklyn's Academy of Music. Did get to see David Sedaris read from his book.

I buy "cool" jeans but they all turn into dad jeans after a few washes (now I get the whole don't wash the jeans business).

Becoming corny isn't the worst thing in the world.

Nas on the other hand, in that Henny commercial and Life is Good Album comes off as mature and still comes off as...just cool.

WORD...I dig it! Funny though, this is my other favorite emcee in the world. Atleast Nas is still on his emcee swag. Sh*t, to be honest, I sound kinda silly talkin' like this, and being a year and half off from forty. But f* it, though. I'm still fightin' for my youth.
